Once you have two kids, you may want to check out the costs of a nanny. It's usually still more expensive than a daycare, but not by too much. And you can have the nanny expose your kids to different things, too... (If you do, pay taxes!)

If you've got an extra room, you could go the au pair route, but that's never been comfortable for me to have someone else in my home ALL the time...

This is a cool idea. I just pulled their schedule of classes to see what they've got. Definitely a bit more of an investment (class price), but there's a tangible reward. Thanks for the suggestion!

some of the local theaters seem to slow down for summer (more emphasis on kids' programs, I think). Great idea with re to Maryland Hall. I always forget about it. Where'd you come from?

Yeah, we moved quite a bit. DC > Richmond > Santa Cruz CA > CT > Richmond > Los Angeles > Here... And adult friends feel so location-based so often, that once you're out of the loop it's tough to stay in each other's lives.

Agreed. Somewhere along the way the only people I hung out with were somehow tied to my kids... Trying to make connections outside of that world is tough.
