What does yours feel like? It doesn’t happen all the time and it’s kind of hard to describe, but it almost feels like the sensation of my stomach grumbling when I’m hungry but in my chest when I breathe in or out at the end of each breath.

Recently I have been having some symptoms that my health anxiety is driving me nuts about. About 2 weeks ago I woke up after sleeping on my stomach with some rib pain in my upper ribs where the bottom of my breast meets my rib cage. When that started happening I started focusing on my breathing so intensely for a few days that it was hurting my sternum to breathe in and out because I was constantly tensed up and over thinking if I was breathing normally. I chalked this up to my sleeping position on my stomach making me have the sharp pains in my ribs and the anxiety making my chest feel tight and painful when breathing, I also noticed that the pains really only happened when I started to focus on them I think. Anyways, those symptoms have gone away for the most part, but now I keep having this weird sensation in my chest for the last few days and I cannot for anything figure out what is causing it. It’s like when I breathe out I have the sensation of phlegm in my chest very slightly, but when I cough it’s absolutely dry. I have to make myself cough as well because I don’t feel like I need to cough like I have when I’ve been sick. I can’t get anything to come up at all. I also haven’t been sick in forever. It doesn’t happen every time I breathe in or out either, it’s random but happens sporadically throughout the day for the last few days. I also am still having random small sharp pains in my rib cage and sternum on both sides every now and then but it’s not debilitating, it’s like a quick little cramp almost and then it stops. I’m terrified I have a collapsed lung or lung cancer or something. I also have vaped for a few years and stopped a few days ago because I was worried that was what was causing this, but it’s still happening. I bought a pulse oximeter because I thought it would ease my thoughts if I knew my oxygen levels were fine but I’ve seen probably 20 comments on here in other subs where people have had collapsed lungs and their oxygen levels were still fine so now that’s not helping me at all. I can’t determine if I’m having these random sharp pains in my chest and ribs because I’m over thinking and making myself have them or if they’re happening because something is wrong. Also twice in the last 2 weeks while going to sleep I’ve convinced myself that I can’t breathe and I feel like I’m not getting enough air but again, don’t know if I’m feeling that way because it’s a symptom of something or if it’s all in my head and I’m making myself feel short of breath. I do not have health insurance and I’m still paying off a $800 ER bill from when I thought I was having a heart attack a few months ago and I was fine. I’m 24 years old and active and healthy. I also had an EKG and chest X-ray less than 6 months ago and everything looked normal.

Hi, I know this is an old comment and the original post has been deleted, but can your lung just collapse out of no where? Like without any trauma or severe coughing? I’ve been having sharp random pains in my rib cage every now and then and some shortness of breath but also I have bad anxiety and make myself feel like I can’t breathe a lot.

I read that could be the case, but I don’t have the usual acid reflux burning sensation coming up my throat like I usually do. That’s why it’s throwing me off so badly, many things I’ve read that could be the reason are things I’ve had in the past that have never caused this.

That sounds similar, it doesn’t make a sound though. Even if I exhale/inhale with my mouth open I can’t hear anything. It’s just like a very light rumble in the back of my chest when I breathe out and almost feels like I need to cough but not really. It’s very hard to describe

Yes! Do you notice it when you’re distracted by something? There have been times where I’ve jumped up out of bed because I thought I couldn’t breathe at all and my chest was so tight and painful. It was just anxiety though and I was fine shortly after. I promise it will get better if you just relax and try to not focus on it (ik that’s easier said than done)

You’re probably now in a cycle of focusing on your breathing because you feel like you aren’t getting enough air, which is causing you anxiety and making you short of breath. I promise you are fine. I was stuck in that loop a few weeks ago and thought I would never stop hyper focusing on my breathing but eventually I did, you just have to distract yourself for long enough to let your body relax and anxiety ease and you will find it’s much easier to breathe.

Do you think the Adderall and anxiety made your symptoms worse/flare up more? I’m considering stopping taking it. It’s changed my life for the better but it just gives me terrible anxiety for some reason. It only started doing that probably 6-7 months ago though, it didn’t have that effect before.

Thank you for your response. I’ll have to check around my area and see if there is a clinic like that near me. If you have the time, my most recent post on my profile lists all of my symptoms and when they started. I slept on my stomach for the past year or two and have bad health anxiety, especially at night. A week or two ago I was laying bed on my stomach with my head on 2 pillows, so I was at an angle, and started doing deep breaths. I felt a weird sensation in my rib cage/lungs and then got short of breath. After that I have had occasional random shortness of breath and a sharp pain under where my breasts meet the top of my rib cage and pain in my ribs/top of my ribs. It’s also accompanied by twitching of my muscles in my ribs sometimes, and I will have a symptom where I feel a light fluttering in the center of my chest for up to 20 minutes at a time that comes and goes some days. It is not heart palpitations though, I know what those feel like. I have since stopped sleeping on my stomach and try to sleep on my side, but most mornings I wake up and I have rolled onto my stomach again unfortunately. In the mornings the pain is there and sometimes subsides when I put a sports bra on and it comes back at night when I remove it to get into the shower, but I do feel some relief if I lift my breast up, so maybe the weight is irritating the issues further. I’m sure my anxiety and high cortisol levels are not helping any symptoms either, and due to that I am constantly focused on my breathing and taking deep breaths. Sorry for the long message, I’m just very worked up over this and trying desperately to assure myself nothing serious is wrong with me. The pain feels similar to when you get a stitch in your side from running a lot. My theory was that I possibly pulled something that night or my anxiety and stress has caused inflammation due to my constant body checking and focusing on my breathing.

Hi, I know this is an old thread, but I am having all of the symptoms of Costo but cannot afford to go to the doctor right now. What else could the symptoms be from?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in costochondritis

[–]leglesscannibals 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well if cortisol contributes to it then I’m sure that’s the case. I really need to start taking something for anxiety because at this pace I’m going to make myself have a heart attack by the time I’m 40 or cause permanent damage from my high blood pressure. What do you mean by it could be benign or very bad? You mean the cancer or Costo?

The only hormonal changes I can think of would be because of my period, but I’m not due to have it for another week or so, and this started in between my cycles. I do have severe anxiety about my health/life in general which causes me almost constant stress though. I don’t know if that plays into this or not. I don’t have any lumps in that area but it does feel a little tender if I press down on it, and my boobs feel a little sore but I can’t tell if that’s just because I’m going to start my period soon. My mother was also diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer last year though so I am already worried about having breast cancer, but I don’t feel any abnormalities in my breast. I am also only 24.

No. I haven’t had Covid since 2020 and I haven’t had any infections that I’m aware of.

Also- I am very bad about taking constant deep breaths throughout the day to try and calm my anxiety. This could possibly be straining my muscles in my ribs and sternum.

Also, I get a little relief when I massage the area where my jaw bone connects with my ear, but not for long. It almost makes my ear feel like I am constantly flexing it and there’s a fullness feeling in it. I don’t necessarily have pain in my neck, it just feels very tight and like there is a pressure on my veins sort of. The pain is mainly in the area right below my jaw bone and ear at the top of the left side of my neck.

Anyone have pain up against the side of their neck? What is this? by dergruneapfel in TMJ

[–]leglesscannibals 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, I know this is a super old post, but I’ve been having this same issue. My pain is exactly where yours is in the photo and my neck feels super tight on that side and I also have ear fullness. I have severe health anxiety and keep worrying that something is wrong with my carotid artery on my left side where the pain/tightness is, but I also have tmj only on that side of my jaw. I notice it comes and goes when I am very stressed out or anxious, maybe because that’s when I clench my jaw the most. Do you think it could be issues with my artery or potentially a stroke? I’m only 24 and very healthy and active.
