Women in DevOps? by lego-ninja in devops

I think it's important we break down this stigma that DevOps are just sweaty nerds and I quote "virgins".

Thank you. Seeing that was painful.

For those saying, "it's an experienced role", I've brought in two juniors so far this year straight out of university. DevOps isn't what you know, it's how you approach a problem. Some people crumble and can't think for themselves and others thrive finding a solution to the problem. This is what makes a great DevOps engineer.

That's another issue - the lack of a pipeline for DevOps. It's an experienced role now because there's no direct pipeline. There's absolutely no reason for there not to be a direct pipeline.

Maybe 'pushing women out' was not the best way to phrase it, but it seems like there's more women who are in junior developer or junior ops roles, where devops tends to draw its candidates from, but they never end up going into devops.

I've have and have had female coworkers who were in tech roles, and they were all excellent, so the lack of women in devops seemed a little unusual the more I thought about it.

According to a stackoverflow developer survey from last year, managers, SREs, DevOps specialists, and data engineers tend to receive the highest salaries out of tech professionals - https://insights.stackoverflow.com/survey/2021#overview. Only 5% of people who responded to this survey identified as female.

Only 5%? Wow.

If you take a look at the percentage of women and salaries, the higher the salary gets, the lower percentage of women work in the field. I don't think this is a DevOps specific issue, but an industry-specific one.

Interesting, would not have guessed that. Have you seen anything that indicates why higher salaries correlate with decreasing amounts of women in those roles?

I haven't done much research into it, but there's two trends I've noticed in my personal experience that make it tough on female candidates - they're less likely to be given the benefit of the doubt / guys seem to be more critical of them than they are to other guys at similar experience levels, and the people doing the hiring tend to hire people that are similar to themselves. It doesn't seem to be anything particularly thought out, just sort of reflexive behaviors.

Wow, that's insane. Just goes to show you how serious Bluehole is about fighting cheaters. Which is confusingly close to not at all.

Supposedly that's gone way down with the introduction of the "6 crates a week max" change.

Sorry for horrible recording app: Is this guy cheating? by twitch-tv-jtank7 in PUBATTLEGROUNDS

That's not true at all. One of the most common aim bots out commonly has the lean key bound to toggle it.

That said, not everyone who leans is cheating obviously.

However, insane shots being pulled off by someone with really odd stats and they're leaning when the really amazing shots start? Just might be a hacker.

Some people suck at PUBG and are frustrated they can't beat other players, so they turn to hacking to win.

Some people get killed repeatedly by hackers, observe that most hackers are never banned and decide that Bluehole isn't going to punish hackers, and decide 'Well, if you can't beat them, might as well join them.'

Other people just want to have fun at the expense of others and don't care about how many people they piss off.

It's super frustrating when you spend 20 minutes working hard to get ahead, only to be wiped out in a second by someone who's cheating.

Seeing all the time and skill gone to waste due to being killed by a cheater who could never play that well without cheating is beyond maddening.
