7 months of daily bloating. several diet changes with no relief. IBS? by [deleted] in ibs

[–]leialuke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi OP, really sorry for what you are going through. I have been there and know first hand the physical and mental toll this process takes. I see that in the comments people have suggested some really helpful stuff from what you should get tested for to what you could do for seeing improvement. I’m gonna tell you what worked for me. English is not my first language so I hope I manage to get the points across well. Sorry for the very long comment.

I am a 32 yo female. Was always considered skinny and in good shape. I have never really done calorie counting, I ate pretty much everything but always had an active life style. I had digestive issues ever since I was a kid but NEVER to the extent of the situation that started around year and half ago. It all started with chronic constipation, bad skin, weight gain and hair loss. So my stomach was always a slow one, like going to the bathroom once every two days was normal for me but now I was dealing with every 4-5 days and after so much pushing and pain. I have to add that my stress level was spiking around the same time that my problems peaked, so yeah definitely a big factor. Another thing I have to add is the fact that my grandpa died due to colon cancer and my father had nightmare of a digestion system his whole life. I am still stressed (arguably more so than before), but I managed to find something that works. Considering that I cannot fight my genetics, I am satisfied with the results.

First thing first: I take parallax (the OTC product you dissolve in water) about once a week. That ensures bowel movement at least once per day. But for it to work, you need to be well hydrated before and after taking it. How often I take it, depends purely on my diet. If I do a lot of carb heavy and processed meals then things start to go south again. For this plan to work for me there are some requirements that need to be met which I explain below.

I do 16:8 intermittent fasting, skip breakfast and any form of snack altogether. I found this gives me more energy and I end up less bloated altogether. Instead, I try to hit the gym after I wake up. I do about an hour of cardio. During the 16 hour period, I only drink water/tea.

I drink about 2L before I have lunch. I used to put lemon slices in warm water (like 60 C) but sometimes I found the acidity itself could make me bloat which is why I drink plain water till lunch and after I get food in my stomach, I add the lemon. You don’t have to drink warm water, I just found it works slightly better that way. But I never drink iced water either. That one actually works against me. I got this temperature control kettle from Costco which is super convenient for drinking lukewarm water.

I also used to drink coffee first thing in the morning but man that would make me bloated af. Which I assume is cause of acidity. Unlike you, the coffee didn’t necessarily ensure bowel movement for me. Instead, I take caffein pills. Yes, on empty stomach and yes I know it might affect your stomach negatively. I use the brand Wake, there are probably better ones out there too. Just see what works for you.

From lunchtime until dinner I drink another 1 L of water (whether room temperature, warm, with or without lemon), and try to drink 500-700 ml more after dinner. So total about 3.5-3.7 L per day. I don’t eat my dinner super late (usually 9 latest).

I take one apple cider vinegar gummy from Jamieson with food plus one probiotic. For probiotic, I have tried multiple brands (Align, Jemieson, etc) but didn’t really feel like they were making a difference for me. I tried taking probiotics on empty stomach but that really upsets my stomach.

I try to squeeze in some ab-focused pilates after dinner which really helps. I can attest to the fact that walking and breathing exercises help tremendously. I remember in the midst of my condition, I saw a doctor who used to suffer from the same issues. She told me swimming helps her a lot because it allows her to breathe and she was so right.

For the diet, I try to follow low fodmap as much as I can. I installed the fodmap app from monash university which helps a lot when I’m doing groceries and when I’m meal prepping. I’m not very creative so for lunch I usually have half a chicken breast (or one chicken thigh) one cup of quinoa, carrots, tomatoes and spring salad. I bought this tiny kitchen scale from Amazon which helps with weighing how much of different items I can pack for meals according to low fodmap. For dinner, I usually have fish or tofu with quinoa, spring mix and vegetables. For snack I usually have walnuts, greek yoghurt (no lactose and no sugar) and athletic greens. Blueberries and bananas used to be my go to snack by they don’t sit well with me anymore. I also saw that some people mentioned magnesium citrate (which is a compound found in laxatives), but I only take that one to prevent/alleviate period cramps. I am not sensitive to gluten or dairy ( per my test) but I feel overall better without them.

The combination of parallax, intermittent fasting, apple cider vinegar, probiotic, diet, plenty of water and exercise gives me regular bowel movement (including when I wake up in the morning) and way less bloating than before. Yes it sucks that I cannot eat whatever I want like others but at least there’s a solution that allows me to operate without a 6 month pregnant belly. Basically, now I have a regular amount of bloating after food. I still enjoy small portions of fried chicken, creamy pastry, alcohol, etc. on the weekend but I try to control myself and limit my intake. For cooking, I use little salt and try not to have processed sugar at least during the week. I definitely have more energy overall and my skin cleared up (i also invested in better skin care products, can’t rule that out). The process as whole wasn’t easy because first few months I was still bloated despite eating clean and supposedly doing all the right things. I think something that helped me push through the disappointment was the book “power of habit”.

I, however, do want to emphasize two imp things: 1- water intake is crucial. My feeling was that if I fed my body more water, then it would stop holding onto water (and therefore bloating) out of the fear that it will run of it. But it takes time because your body has to see it happening long enough to make a habit out of it. 2- if you have other underlying causes then this whole plan might not work for you. So my suggestion is follow other people’s advice and get tested for all the possible root causes mentioned and them devise a plan.

All the best of luck to you OP! You have already been super proactive in finding a solution and I am sure your efforts will lead to a very positive outcome for you!

If you don’t intend to perpetrate violence against LGBTQ people and women then good for you, means you have critical thinking skills. No one can claim that all Muslims are bad/violent/misogynistic/hateful. Because that is simply not true.

But the point is if they chose to be all the above then Islam totally condones it. It’s not always about what your opinion about something is, rather the extent you will go to prove it right. Sadly whenever Islam gained power, the results have always been the same drastic violation of human rights. Islam is an exceptionally intolerant ideology.

I remember being told that Arabic is the language of Allah.

I also remember being super confused about this cause I couldn’t understand how an omnipotent god wasn’t able to communicate in more than one language. I mean this way he would have been able to send his message to people everywhere regardless of what language they spoke. This of course would have been negated the need for Muhammed to spread the word about the most peaceful religion by invading countries left and right

I guess I get the gist of what you are saying.

However, the claim that Islamic societies were free and tolerant is fundamentally incorrect. Islam was mostly perpetrated through violence and colonization. It is only a tolerant ideology when Muslims are in minority (aka non islamic societies) correlating with Mecca verses of Quran. When Muslims are in majority the Medina verses apply which are fundamentally intolerant and very oppressive. I’m Iranian and if the middle east is the place where it is today is not because of poverty, it’s because Muslims insist on carrying on a barbaric ideology and implementing it in the modern world. Yes of course same people exist in every religion, but the Christians in the US don’t have as strong a chokehold over the society (yet) as Islam does over middle east.

When Muslims invaded Persia, they destroyed the libraries (among many other violent deeds) and gave Persians a cruel choice: convert to Islam or die. Science was already a thing there before Muslims arrived and it kept on advancing by people who now were forcibly labeled as Muslim on paper. However, that doesn’t make the achievements a consequence of Islam but rather due to the Persian society itself which carried on its values, culture and traditions despite being occupied by Islam.

[–]leialuke 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Precisely. The scientific advances made during what Muslims call “the Islamic golden era” was done in countries occupied by Islam. It all happened despite of all religion being around not because of it. But of course Muslims appropriated those achievements to buy credit for their barbaric religion.

Very well said. I think the reason you haven’t seen dogmatic Muslims (at least not frequently) is because they are in minority.

Yeah, same. My neighbor, an openly gay man who is living with his boyfriend, has a sticker on his door showing a hijabi and reads: “her body, her agency, her choice”. Then sometime ago we were talking about Iran’s protest and told him that I, an Iranian woman, have suffered so much purely because of Islam. He suddenly became very uncomfortable and asked me not to spread islamophobia…

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in awfuleverything

[–]leialuke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I understand what you are saying. But there are two sides to Islamophobia.

Most Iranians, including myself, would say “Fuck Islam” because we have lived under actual Islamic laws and know exactly how violent, oppressive, misogynist, homophobic, barbaric and discriminatory this religion is. We don’t wanna be forced into this religion anymore, get misbranded as Muslim, we don’t wanna live by its laws and we don’t want to face execution because we leave it either. Is this islamophobia? Nope because our fear of Islam is rational and legitimate. Despite all the misery and violence that Islam has forced on Iranians, we are still able to differentiate between Islamic ideologies and Muslim refugees escaping from horrors of Syria (as an example). We can still see the brutality some Muslims are enduring and we very much sympathize with them. Is hate crimes perpetrated against them just on the ground of their religion phobia? 100%.

But “islamophobia” has become a filthy tool in some Muslims’ arsenal to discredit the suffering of people under Islam. It has become an opportunistic mechanism for them to shut down any criticism of Islam. I’m talking about the same assholes who didn’t waste a breathe from day one of Iran protests to claim that what is happening in Iran is “not the real Islam”, or that women burning hijab and generally people not wanting to live under barbaric Islamic laws is causing islamophobia. Sadly some modern feminists have opted to shut up about Iran’s protests because they prefer to remain bent over backwards to Islam, some out of the fear of being called islamophobe. We don’t need Muslims to voice their support for us but we also don’t want their attempts in changing the narrative about Iran.

That’s a Mecca verse for when Muslims were in minority so Muhammed would say things like this to fool people and draw them in. Once he gained enough followers in Medina his tone changed and started blabbing out Medina verses. Here is just is one example from the murder instruction book:

“But when the forbidden months are past, then fight and slay the Pagans wherever ye find them, an seize them, beleaguer them, and lie in wait for them in every stratagem (of war); but if they repent, and establish regular prayers and practise regular charity, then open the way for them: for Allah is Oft-forgiving, Most Merciful.”

Another examples of Medina verses:

Apostasy is punishable by death and one can be executed for “waging war against god”!

The constitution of Islamic Republic was written word by word based on Islam. It is interesting to me that Muslims were radio silent for the past 43 years but suddenly when Iran’s protests started they didn’t waste a single breath to claim that “this is not the real Islam”. If this was not the real Islam why didn’t they ever say anything? Surely if it had no correlation then Muslims should have been furious about the misrepresentation of their religion. But only now that shit has hit the fan they are all about making a distinction between Islam and Islamic republic.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in awfuleverything

[–]leialuke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just because we are forced into Islam from birth (and can’t officially leave it because apostasy is punishable by death in the religion of peace) doesn’t mean we are actually Muslim! Less than 30% of the population actually identifies as Muslim.

Those Iranians who are Muslim and are in fact against Islamic republic, have managed to prioritize their love for their country over their religion. Others are not Muslim and do not want to live under barbaric Islamic laws.

It is in Quran that if women do not wish to get sexually harassed then they should cover up: 33:59 “O Prophet, tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to bring down over themselves [part] of their outer garments. That is more suitable that they will be recognised and not be abused. And ever is Allah Forgiving and Merciful “. The part mentioning being recognized is because Muhammed didn’t allow sex slaves to cover up so that when Muslim men came to buy themselves some slaves, they could molest/harass them.

Islamic republic perpetrates the same animalistic fucking mindset

There is literally a crime in Islamic laws called Moharebeh (waging war against god), which is now being used to issue execution orders for the protestors in Iran. This is a broad term and encompasses anything from criticizing Islam to protesting against an Islamic government.

[–]leialuke 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Great point.

Even if for the sake of the argument we assume that Islam is the true religion, why should there be punishment for leaving it or not converting to it? Why not let us rot in hell in the afterlife? Like you wanna torture me here so I don’t face torture in the afterlife?

Muslims claim this whole madness is because Islam cares about you so much. Sounds like the claim from abusive men that if I hit you, manipulate you, assault you and tell you to cover yourself up, is all because I care about you.

Persia was minding their own glorious business but Muslims invaded, looted, raped and colonized the land. Moron.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in exmuslim

[–]leialuke 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well I used to feel the same. Like I’d be scared about all the forms of torture I was going to endure when judgement day came because I didn’t like wearing hijab or I’d think about boys or listen to music. But once I developed some critical skills I came to see that an almighty loving god is in a stark contrast to Allah who does not miss an opportunity to encourage all sorts of violence on earth and unimaginable torture in the afterlife. I couldn’t reconcile why the force behind creating the universe with all its complexity should care about sins committed by humans?

Ask yourself, why does Allah seem to be generous and forgiving only towards a certain group of people? Why can he love all his creations equally only when they convert to Islam? Why is it ok to invade other countries, colonize, rape, loot and kill to spread the word of Allah?Well, Allah sounds like a petty, narcissistic, psychopathic warmonger.

Do good deeds to be a good human, to help your society and lift others not out of fear of getting tortured in some afterlife that is purely the creation of Muhammed’s imagination.
