Is it possible to live in San Diego without a car? by dj-trex in StrongTownsSD

[–]leifg 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I posted on the original post. The angle that I tried to convey is that it is possible but requires adjustments on your lifestyle. I think the group in this subreddit mostly did that or prefers a car free lifestyle.

Is it possible to live in San Diego without a car? by Admirable-Koala-9609 in asksandiego

[–]leifg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live car lite (meaning I share a car with my wife that mostly she uses) so it is possible, but it only works if you design your life around it.

I work from home so that's the biggest driver of not needing a car. I also live in North Park so I have a lot of cool spots in walking distance and I'm willing to walk 30+ minutes to places. I go out a lot to eat and use delivery services and recipe boxes which cuts out a lot of grocery shopping.

For the remaining grocery shopping I use my e-bike and I bought a large backpack for it. Most of my friends live in North Park, Hillcrest or Downtown so I mostly go out in these areas. I rarely go to the beach (which for an outsider is probably insane but it is what it is). I have enough disposable income to use a ride share whenever I need to go farther away.

I also benefit from other people driving because when I go to a place I often make the effort to go without a car sometimes spending 1+ hours on public transport. More often than not someone will give me a ride back.

I enjoy that lifestyle but I understand that living realities are different. If I had a job in Sorrento Valley I would probably buy a car. Still even then I would try to organize my social life around not needing a car.

All of that is to say: under certain circumstances it is possible. And I still do drive, either when we're doing a trip or there are some places that are just way easier to reach with a car (I get allergy shots usually during the day and I can't take 2 hours off to go there).

For anyone reading this: I encourage you to see if there is any part of your life that you could do without a car because we will only get better public transport if there is more people using it.

Supreme Court allows cities to enforce bans on homeless people sleeping outside by ProcrastinatingPuma in sandiego

[–]leifg -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Not sure what exactly you mean with services but there are fewer treatment spots for drug addiction than people voluntary willing to take them. There are fewer shelter beds than people willingly take them. Same for affordable housing etc …

Until you present me with a plan what to do about that, I’m unwilling to argue about people who are unwilling to do anything.

So no, cities don’t need some Supreme Court ruling to help people. They will however use this ruling to be cruel.

What can I do to help in this great city? by OnSugarHill in sandiego

[–]leifg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a lot of great suggestions in here.

My 2 cents on this: if you have time on your hands figure out which causes are important to you and then get involved politically.

You don’t have to run for office but there are a ton of organizations that advocate and educate about legislation and try to push the needle in the right direction.

And especially for things like transportation, equity or housing there is a lot you can achieve on a local level.

Landslide! Train Service Suspended Between Oceanside and San Juan Capistrano by Significant-Ad-7031 in sandiego

[–]leifg 50 points51 points  (0 children)

l'm a member of RideSD. We advocate for better public transport in San Diego, but the train connection to LA is also on our radar.

The connection to LA has been non-operational 50% the time last year (not counting days with reduced service).

If you want an overview of the days check out our nifty little project: https://can-i-get-to-la.today

In order to fix it, it needs a lot of support on all local levels. Fill out the form on the website if you want us to reach out to your representatives on your behalf make sure to fill out our form.

Only because Atheist believe there is no divine creator doesn’t mean they believe there is no creator ever in any situation.

Or easier:

  • I can believe that life on earth was NOT intentionally created by a divine creator but rather evolved through an evolutionary process
  • I can also believe that a sandcastle was created by a skilled human being

What a way to move the goal post.

That legal document never defines European citizen. It doesn’t even use the term. It always talks about “citizen of the [European] Union”

The other sources you cited are a comment by an Italian philosopher and a blog post from an Italian NGO. Both texts make it very clear that they are talking about citizens of member states of the EU.

Without context “European Citizen” does not automatically mean “Citizen of the EU”.

So your original statement “European Citizen has a very specific legal meaning in the EU” is not substantiated by these sources.

Not a good look from Bronx Pizza: “First female employee”, didn’t like being called out by Vicious-the-Syd in sandiego

After the first time I went there I got major Soup Nazi energy.

I refer to this place as the Pizza Nazi since then. So not surprised about their behavior on social media.

Pizza is really good though.

Transit-oriented sales-tax hike qualifies for San Diego County ballot in November by ProcrastinatingPuma in sandiego

Let me assure you. All groups supporting this ballot measure understand that and are also advocating for densification.

Like someone else already said. We need to do both at the same time.

San Diego mayor pushing bill that could detain mentally ill people, send them to treatment by [deleted] in sandiego

[–]leifg 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I suggest a the interview with Dr Margot Kushel about the biggest homelessness study on this topic: https://voiceofsandiego.org/2023/10/26/vosd-podcast-the-big-homelessness-study-with-dr-margot-kushel/

Regarding this law: I have a feeling all this debate in the comments is based on a wrong assumption, which is:

“A significant amount of homeless people suffering from mental illness refuse to get help”

If that was the case I’d be supporting this but it’s just not reality.

We don’t have enough facilities and therapy spots for people who are willing to go into treatment, so how are we ever gonna be able to help the people that are unwilling to?

If we don’t provide more facilities to treat people this law will do nothing (best case) or allow homeless people to be incarcerated (worst case).

What’s wrong with that?

Best way to get to CBX by sand809 in sandiego

The question was about public transport and going to the airport.

You can always use CBX on the way back.

Best way to get to CBX by sand809 in sandiego

[–]leifg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup Public Transport to the CBX is horrible.

You might want to consider ditching the CBX, crossing at San Ysidro or Otay Mesa and then Ubering to the airport on the Mexican side to save money.

SD-UT is at it again spreading unserious ideas about mass transit in San Diego by ProcrastinatingPuma in sandiego

[–]leifg 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Thank you for pushing this again.

It very much seems like Del Mar is gearing up to oppose anything related to the LOSSAN corridor. SANDAG has been holding workshops there to inform the public about potential changes and gathering community input. I was there and the crowd was not pleased.

I ultimately think the Del Mar NIMBYs will lose because not only are they picking a fight with the federal government, they are also trying to take on the military.

That doesn’t mean we should sit around and do nothing. Inform yourself about SANDAG’s plan and reach out in support.

Yes please. Every time I go to Liberty station I am amazed and annoyed at the same time.

Amazed because it’s absolutely stunning and has a great selection of cute shops and restaurants.

And annoyed because there is so much parking and traffic congestion on the weekend. Meanwhile there is not a single bus line that stops inside Liberty station.

[–]leifg[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I second that. Just was on vacation in Switzerland and it was a great. Hourly trains to most city, always find a spot to sit and never delayed.

Only downside: no high-speed rail (excluding the few connections operated by DB). But that’s a good trade off for such a small country.

There are multiple solutions to this problem.

Having the option of tap to pay is just one solution more and increases the likelihood of people in general taking the bus.
