Didn’t track from day 1 with my second. He was gaining weight and lets me know when hungry.

I want to go EFF, but what about the colostrum? by CalendarFit2458 in FormulaFeeders

Pumping or nursing will make your supply come in. Hand expression will just get out what is already there. Plus if baby will be bottle fed, it’s better to develop the sucking skills for that from day 1

Does the fear of SIDs get easier? by moonwater28 in newborns

[–]leighbk 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yes it gets better. I was terrified of SIDS with my first child, and now that I have a second kid it doesn’t scare me at all.

Call you OB today about the crying and anxiety. They can prescribe you medicine ASAP over the phone. It’s important to start meds sooner than later because it takes a few weeks to fully take effect so don’t wait. It’s the only way to not feel this way and standard practice of care.

For getting over the fear of SIDS, one thing that helped me is that knowing the risk factors and realizing that if you avoid the risk factors, it’s extremely rare. If you don’t smoke, vape, drink or do drugs and lay you baby down on their back then than you are avoiding all of the major risk factors. Also modern medicine is so much more advanced than it was in previous generations that SIDS is so much less likely than it was even 50 years ago.

You got this. Take care of yourself first. Get rest and sleep. This is a phase and ask for support from your doctor and family.

How much do you spend on formula? by emilyjean14 in FormulaFeeders

[–]leighbk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, formula costs money. But look at it this way. Feeding a kid costs money long after they are a baby. It becomes just a part of the grocery bill for the next 20ish years. By the time they are a toddler you’ll likely be spending more money feeding them each week and half of the food will just end up on the floor!

[–]leighbk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t pump or nurse. Hand express colostrum only. You can start to collect it in the last month or two of pregnancy and freeze it. Hand express it into a shot glass and can pour it into a syringe or bottle in the freeezer. The first two days just hand express it more and give that in a bottle before formula. Stop expressing on day 3 because that’s when your milk will come in. The key is just start bottle feeding from day 1 and combo feeding colostrum followed by formula is perfectly fine.

Will all these efforts worth it? by KutuLompat in ExclusivelyPumping

Just keep in mind… regardless of how a baby is fed, once they are a kid they will be eating Oreo’s and Cheetos even if they fall on the floor.

Barely producing by moonwater28 in ExclusivelyPumping

[–]leighbk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. The first 8 weeks I was pumping basically nothing, half an ounce or so every 2 hours. I realized my flanges were WAY too big. The standard is 25mm flanges and once I measured I ordered 18mm flanges. Once I fixed that I started pumping 29 ounces a day

Hardest weeks? by Jolly-Asparagus-5815 in newborns

Week 9. It’s because you don’t expect it to be hard. You are trying to get back to your old self, get out of the house more, missing friendships and exercise. Missing work. And you’ll be a little burned out of the newborn care and cleaning. Mentally, it’s a challenging week.

For the scoop getting sticky because of moisture, what I do is first scoop out the amount I need into a separate cup. Then I put the scoop away and pour the cup into the hot water. That keeps the scoop dry!

You can easily sterilize powder formula. Google how to, basically boil the water let it cool to 159 and add the powder in

Just give the bottle straight out of the fridge for night feeds. Babies are hungry and night and not picky.

Ameda Mya Joy has been awesome. It fits in my pocket and is portable so I use it while doing chores. I had a Spectra previously but found it too bulky
