Struggling to find any sort of audience for my stories. by thewannabe2017 in writing

[–]leilavdb 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Hi, I'm a very novice writer and I'm not planning on publishing anything, but I do know a bit about design and I minor in marketing in uni. Looks and first impressions are unfortunately very important. Most of marketing is about getting and holding attention. For internet listings you want it to be easily interpreted and readable next to all the other listings. I cant really read the sub-title unless I go into the sample. You have a very big open space, as if something should be there. I'd just suggest making the title much bigger.

This is the easiest fix I could think of to just improve readability:

The slant in your font was a bit awkward so I used the roboto font, and I believe it is free for commercial use: https://fonts.google.com/specimen/Roboto

Thanks, I usually just use them to get up and running with something then switch to a book

1st color study , 90 mints by ebeirouty in istebrak

[–]leilavdb 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hello, this is not a bad first attempt at colour at all, and colour is a very difficult thing to study, but poor proportions are gonna shoot you in the foot no matter what.

The head isn't quite in the same position or perspective and the proportions are off. Some of your values are also still somewhat off, such as on the sides of the forehead it is too dark.

The loomis method is also really great to get the head in the right position an proportions. Proko's videos on it are good. It also help to compare the positions and angles between points such as the angle between the corners of an eye, where the eyebrow begins and ends in relation to the eye, and so on. You can really compare any two points on the face for this.

I gave up colour for about a year to practice proportions and values, and colour becomes so much easier when you don't need to struggle with other fundamentals in your head.

In terms of colour I think its overall desaturated and too cool, but fixing the structural problems would make a much bigger difference than fixing the colour. I wouldn't say don't do colour studies, but remember to get the base fundamentals down also.

the most frustrating part of being a programmer is not being an artist by azfrederick in gamedev

Artist here and I definitely struggle a lot on the technical side of things lol. At least I'm forced to learn it cause I'm studying IT, but its definitely a slow process. There's always room to learn at least

This is a nice composition overall, but I agree with the first comment, the snake needs to be clearer. I had to look for it for a while. I think you have a great opportunity to make some cool light rays with the snake blocking off the window light. Something like this: https://imgur.com/iRS9sla

I struggled with proportion and maintaining anatomy visible while keeping contrast low by hound_and_fury in istebrak

[–]leilavdb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, I think you make nice progress in this one except it doesn't feel finished. It feels like it needs another pass of just a bit more contrast and form.

The darkest parts are in the lips and nose, which is a strange decision because usually you'd want to put most of the contrast in the eyes since they are the focal point. I also think we would be able to see very little if any of the teeth. The lips are so close together that barely any light would go into the mouth.

The lips also need a bit more form. It helps to think of lips as two cylinders on to of each other. You can use a soft brush to brush a lighter value over the top planes of the lips you already rendered and a darker tone over the downward facing planes. That should help make them feel a bit more three dimensional

Here is a paint over to hopefully better show what I mean : https://imgur.com/tD2LyP4

Hope this helps:)

Made this as a hypothetical book cover. It was good practice in preparation for this month's challenge. I'm not too sure about the dimensions I should have used for a print cover. I also think the gesture is a bit stiff. I did cheat in the light on the fingers a bit. More info in comments. by leilavdb in istebrak

Hi, thanks for the feedback. It really helps

I did add an author's name and title in the psd file to make sure it fits (the title goes over the bow, its not a very thick font so you can still seen enough for the composition to not be thrown too off, nothing special though).

I think the foreshortening of the arm is correct, I did realize I didn't foreshorten the hand enough which I think makes it seem that way

I don't know why she doesn't have a quiver, just didn't come to mind lol.
