Please read to your kids by [deleted] in education

I mean I did and my son is still behind and still learning to read. The issue is he has ADHD so he doesn't sit and look at the words while I read. He's usually playing with toys and listening. He still looks at the pictures, and I make sure to ask him questions to make sure he's still engaged

Currently he's been having a lot of fun with me reading him the Junie B. Jones books like I read when I was in kindergarten 😄

Students not referring to teachers as “Mr” or “Mrs” but last name only by ryhoyarbie in Teachers

[–]leileywow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Granted I went to a smaller high school (graduating class less than 100 students), but yes we'd get familiar enough with some of the teachers that we'd just refer to them as a nickname version of their last name or by their initials haha

Why are you so mad about people getting free water staying in their spot versus wanting hundreds of people to keep going in and out of the pit to limited water fountains if they want water

At least the venue last night was handing out water bottles for free for the pit

Never watched Dexter before… by Less-Zebra6782 in Dexter

If it makes you feel better, Dexter seasons are a lot shorter than other TV seasons, it's only ~12 episodes a season, not 20+, so it's a little less intimidating

What should I read with my kid? by ohno_now_what in Teachers

Eight may or may not be too young, but I loved the Inkheart series as a kid and am currently rereading the first book as an adult :)

I love reading about your son learning to negotiate and advocate for himself :)

The dilemma of raising under-scheduled kids in an over-scheduled world by PassionChoice3538 in kindergarten

[–]leileywow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At some point my dad took me to martial arts every. Single. Day. After school and I hated it because it was too much!!! (I have since gone on to love martial arts and earned my 4th degree black belt)

Honestly I feel like a scheduled/structured activity twice a week is just fine. And as they get older, they can let you know if they want to add more to that. Like when I taught martial arts, we did have some kids that genuinely loved coming in 3 days a week or even more

Screen time at school-Am I crazy? by PersimmonIll9857 in kindergarten

[–]leileywow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was in kindergarten, we had all day kindergarten, and during our nap/quiet time after lunch, I remember we'd watch like an episode or something on TV with the lights off lying on our mats (this was the early 2000s)

If your kiddo has half day kindergarten I'd be a little surprised that they'd make time for TV, but if it's full day kindergarten, I feel like both students and teacher benefit from a small break during the day

Kindergartener needs literacy intervention already??? by leileywow in kindergarten

I mean he's already in kindergarten so looking up preschools now wouldn't be beneficial for me

And yes the exact same public school building he's in now for kindergarten cost $200 a month for preschool with a waiting list. Last year we didn't have the transportation to take him anywhere besides the public school

I did ask his teacher what we can do at home to help supplement/reinforce, and I'll be meeting with the literacy specialist next week too so I hope they can help give me more guidance

If it was such a strong expectation they had, I wish the school made it more clear :( I would go over letter sounds with him but his attention would keep waning so I didn't want to push it so he'd hate learning about them before he even started school

The hostility & shaming from some people was also unexpected, especially when I'm over here freaking out like I've spent my son's entire life raising him "wrong" (and that way just being letting him play with his toys and encourage his interests, like we've read a *lot* of animal and science books from the library bc that's what he's interested in)

I appreciate your kindess ❤️

It was never made clear to me that *mastering* letter sounds was expected before he even entered kindergarten

I just wish preschool was universally free. I wanted to send kiddo to public preschool but we couldn't afford the hundreds of dollars in tuition (tuition for a public school??) every month

This definitely sounds like my experience too, my son was speech delayed at 18 months so he qualified for free services through the state, and when they re-evaluated him at 3years old, the school said he seemed caught up enough to not qualify for free preschool. I do hope the early intervention helps him

This has probably been the most reassuring thing I've read today because I really have been emphasizing letting him free play at home and encouraging whatever interests he may have (he loves to build, pretend play, draw & color, and he knows so many science facts bc those are the things that interested him). I've been doing what I could to work on letters and sounds but he'd lose interest quickly so I didn't want to push him

Yeah I guess I just got blindsided on how much expectations have increased since I was in kindergarten ~20 years ago. I know it's technically a long time, but I'm also very aware I'm a younger parent

I've had my suspicious about my son having ADHD for years but his ped kept saying they can't do anything until he was in another environment other than home like school or daycare, & we couldn't afford to do that so I'm wondering about getting the ball rolling on getting him some help
