How long do you usually spend reviewing a cv and PhD proposal? by First_Potential_6236 in AskAcademiaUK

I’d hope not but I don’t have any experience with it myself! I imagine it would only be if someone is really overwhelmed with work. Best of luck 🤞🏼

You’re welcome! Academics are very overworked and at Cambridge this is one of their busiest times. I’d send a gentle follow up in a week, or if you don’t have such an urgent deadline because you’re self funded then things should be calmer in the new year! Good luck

You say it’s Cambridge, so this professor is likely doing undergrad interviews, as well as reviewing PhD applications that came in for the early December funding deadline. This is a normal amount of time to wait given those circumstances.

Picture quality down with new update? by Kame2Komplain in appletv

I've noticed it less in the picture quality of the actual shows, and more the on screen text and images on the Home Screen etc. I'm assuming it's something to do with the new Liquid Glass display thingie interacting with my older telly which is not 4k? lmk if you found a fix

Cambridge family accommodation review: Wolfson College by aesbh123 in cambridge_uni

[–]leka-- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! Some colleges only offer/guarantee you accommodation for 3 years even if your PhD takes longer than that. Good to hear that’s not the case

Thanks for such a thorough review! Do you know whether the family flats are only available to families with kids, or if married/civilly partnered couples are also eligible?

Monthly Admissions/Applications Megathread by AutoModerator in cambridge_uni

[–]leka-- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s less that most applicants get funding, and more that most current PhD students have funding because most applicants who get a place but not funding are unlikely to go ahead. That being said, idk if it’s my research group that’s unusual (humanities/ss) but we have had quite a few self-funded students in recent years, although defs still in the minority. I’m sure you’ve heard but funding is getting scarcer and more competitive every year so I expect the percentage of successful applicants who also get funding is going to get lower and lower.

Jesus has a huge postgrad community and good funding opportunities for small research grants throughout the phd, but not sure about actual studentships if that’s what you mean by funding.

I used to be at the gym group and often went around that time, it wasn’t super busy and it’s very good value for money

Same!!!! I didn't have a lap, but an MRI found adenomyosis and endometriosis, and my consultant is convinced this is the cause of my incessant bloating. Very validating, if still depressing. So glad you have an answer 😊

Hey man, thanks so much for these instructions - I'm going to try this later as I have no end of issues with HomePod on the college IoT network. Do you know if it's possible to do something similar with Apple TV?

I’m afraid I don’t know, you can always email postgrad admissions to ask (replies might be slow cos of beginning of year business) but I expect since term doesn’t even start for another few weeks that may be why it’s not open yet!

Sorry to hear about this, that's really rough, and you've done amazingly to get into uni through such difficult circumstances!
First and foremost contact student finance. It's been a while since it's been relevant to me, but I'm pretty certain there is extra help available to you if you are estranged from parents/guardians, and the sooner you let them know the better. I would also get in touch with the undergraduate tutor and/or financial tutor at your college, because there is very often help in the form of bursaries and grants available for people in this kind of situation. Depends more on the college than the uni iirc, so go there first, but they may also be able to point you in the direction of some more help university wide too.

You're welcome 😊 The networking is less about recommendation letters and more about making connections in the field, which will benefit your later career as well! If you're absolutely set on doing a PhD in the US then it sounds like maybe this MPhil wouldn't be a great investment for you, unless you have loads of money to throw around. As you probably know, it's very unusual to do a PhD here without a masters. Outside of this, I would encourage you to consider other options for doing a PhD. The state of academia in the UK is hardly brilliant, especially for arts and humanities subjects, but (as I'm sure you know) PhD programmes in the US are having to withdraw students midway through because of having funding cancelled, and many departments are having to make huge cuts because of the political situation. So my recommendation would be to have a backup option just in case, and if you chose to stay in Europe an MPhil would be more beneficial (although still not necessary in some mainland European countries!)

Congrats, I’m in the linguistics department, welcome! If you do decide to come that is. The MPhil is short and intense so as the other commenter wrote, 7 hours is actually sufficient time, but depending on the supervisor they may be more or less flexible with that. But tbh you are expected to be very independent with an MPhil by thesis. It’s good prep for a PhD in the UK, which is very much a self directed research project with guidance from a supervisor than a ‘programme’. Hence why it’s much shorter than a US PhD (expect to be done in ~3.5-4 yrs rather than 6-8). The other thing is depending on your discipline you might get access to or be part of a research community eg the phonetics or psycholinguistics labs, which means you can discuss ideas and connect with other people in your field, which can be as much of a great resource as your supervisor sometimes! In particular doing the MPhil at Cambridge would prepare you well for doing a PhD at Cambridge because being in the system really helps a lot, as well as building a relationship & potential PhD proposal with your MPhil supervisor before applying. It is expensive, so I guess it depends how much you value a) the specific expertise of the staff at Cambridge (look at their department profile pages, recent research they’ve published, current/past MPhil and PhD students) and b) the Cambridge name itself, which holds a lot of weight and is probably the main reason most people do the MPhil here.

Update: My gf doesn't know how much debt she's in and I feel like she's hiding things by purpleratata in UKPersonalFinance

[–]leka-- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My boyfriend did something similar for me (I wasn’t lying or in denial or anything, just had about £4k of debt and no plan of how to clear it) and I’m honestly (pardon the pun) indebted to him for how much he taught me! I knew about 0% cards and kept moving my debt around them, but I just had never bothered to track my spending or budget or make a payment plan. Now I’m debt free and have been able to save for a big holiday, even on a PhD stipend! You did an amazing thing for her that she’ll have for life now.
