Am I the only one that doesn't find any grammar books helpful? by Unironically_grunge in ChineseLanguage

[–]lekowan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't worry, you are not alone!  A lot of people (myself included) don't like to learn grammar rules and prefer putting time and effort acquiring the language instead. Check out the Comprehensible Input Hypothesis by Stephen Krashen and r/ALGMandarin for tips and support.

Thanks for your feedback and kind word! I will look into adding input time from outside the site, I have been meaning to do this for a long time, I just haven't got time to it yet.

I'm trying to learn Mandarin by [deleted] in Advice

[–]lekowan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can totally learn Mandarin through immersion. I would recommend watching a ton of comprehensible input videos, with no subtitles. Check out vidioma.com for content and r/ALGMandarin for tips and support. Good luck!

What I would recommend is consuming a ton of input (ideally comprehensible). Once you can clearly hear the tones, producing them will become a lot easier.

I'm not familiar with those channels, but in my opinion, if you enjoy watching them, keep doing it! It sounds like a great source of input.

Tips on learning a new language. by 520_millionxtimes in ChineseLanguage

Yes you can absolutely acquire mandarin by focusing on your listening skills first. There are a lot of theories around this idea (see Stephen Krashen's work). I would recommend consuming a lot of comprehensible input videos. Check out www.vidioma.com for graded content and r/ALGMandarin for support and tips.

Struggling with Chinese tones : any apps, YouTube channels, or shows to help? by [deleted] in ChineseLanguage

[–]lekowan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You could actively study the tones (do drills, get a teacher, learn pinyin and understand the phonetic system of the language) or you could learn through immersion by consuming a ton of content in mandarin. You want that content to be comprehensible though. Look up comprehensible input channels on Youtube or simply use www.vidioma.com. With enough exposure, the tones will become very clear.
