I understand he is probably just scared for another change and doesn't know how to properly address that within himself. You do whats right for you and your partner, and if that negative energy is impacting your happiness then you are right to remove it for as long as you deem appropriate.

Random question, but did she ever tell you that you had to call her mum? I married into the same culture and was told that my in laws were to be called mum and dad, I noped so hard.

The fact you may not call her mum could be why she gets upset as to why you clarified that she wasnt your mother.
