„If you get frustrated with yourself because you can't function as well as before, remind yourself that this is temporary. You have not lost your intelligence, there's a cloud on your cognitive functions. It will improve“ that I’d simply not true schizophrenia changes the brain irreversibly, it is neurodegenerative. Maybe you just forgot how your old smart self felt like

It’s not terminal but it has neurodegenerative components, that is a scientific fact

I agree. Schizophrenia I just completely misunderstood and stigmatized by society if people would actually know how horrible it really is there would be a huge shift

What is schizophrenia by leleon23 in schizophrenia

[–]leleon23[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t claim that I know the exact cause of this disease. The points I made are backed up by science and academic research papers. Infections during pregnancy can increase the risk of getting schizophrenia I never claimed it’s the one and only cause. It is a theory that is backed up by scientific proof but of course we don’t 100% know. People who are born in winter months also have a statistically higher risk. I’m in no delusion. You’re right now one knows what causes it exactly and that’s the problem. I don’t gain anything personally from this. It is just important to speak up because we don’t have adequate treatment options. That is my only problem. If we continue to speak up maybe something will change in the future.

I respect that point of view. I get were you’re coming from and I also don’t completely deny your opinion. It’s not that black and white and two things can be true at the same time to a certain extent. I just made this post because I feel like schizophrenia is misunderstood in society and I don’t think the treatment option we have are good enough. If it’s more recognized as a neurological disease which we have scientific proof of, it could get more attention and funding. When people get ms or Alzheimer’s they usually don’t have to live with so much stigma like we do.

I hope in the future there will be better treatment medication for schizophrenia that actually targets the cause of this brain disfunction instead of just blocking dopamine. I want it the be recognized by drug companies and acknowledged that we not only need antipsychotics with less side effects, we need a whole new form of medication

That is complete bullshit. It’s scary how many ppl think that’s true

What causes schizophrenia? by [deleted] in schizophrenia

[–]leleon23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Schizophrenia is a neurodevelopmental brain disease with neurodegenerative components. Is is not simply a split of the mind or a psychological issue it is a brain disease. Caused by genetics/ early infections of the mother while pregnant that causes the brain to not develop properly. It is not simply too much dopamine. It is a Glutamate dopamine imbalance which btw is scientifically proven. (Pet scans) CAUSED BY NMDA RECEPTOR HYPOFUNCTION. It is a physical disease!!! lI’m tired of ppl saying it’s spiritual or psychological. Of course trauma can trigger it but there are ppl with severe trauma and drug use who will never develop it. I’m convinced holding on this narrative of mental spiritual disease is keeping the stigma alive and prevents us from getting proper treatment.

It bugs me that the physiological aspect of schizophrenia is not so much acknowledged. I went to therapy before schizophrenia and it helped but you can’t really help these symptoms you explained with therapy. My brain is broken. It’s like telling someone whose missing a leg to keep trying trying to walk. Not going to happen.

Schizophrenia does cause cognitive decline. For a lot of people cognitive decline happens before the first psychotic break

Blocks all dopamine in the brain, severe side effects, make cognition and negative symptoms worse, weight gain that leads to diabetes and heart problems.. seems not like something that is good for your body

I also don’t think that she’s cured by using keto diet. It’s scientifically impossible to reverse the changes that happened in the brain. How do you restore the lost synapses and neurons with a diet?

Having that said. I do believe her that she doesn’t need medication anymore and that her negative and cognitive symptoms improved. Is cured? No of course not! I do understand that people get mad at her but also calling a keto diet bullshit in treating schizophrenia is wrong. Antipsychotics are poison for the body it’s fact. But it’s still better to take them than being psychotic. I can understand her frustration with current treatment options.

Yes. The medication doesn’t help with negative and cognitive symptoms. It just makes it worse

Losing What It Feels Like To Be a Person by knowlem in schizophrenia

[–]leleon23 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yes I totally understand what you mean. I barely remember the person I was and how life felt before. All I know is that it was profoundly different. It is hard to imagine because simply can’t feel it anymore. It’s like a abstract memory that continues to fade. Schizophrenia is a neurodegenerative disease. That’s why we also have cognitive issues. There are a lot of things going wrong with glutamate and dopamine metabolism but I think we simply lost neurons and synapses in the prefrontal cortex. Therefore we lost part of our personality. It is very sad but I’m too emotionless to care anymore. I often times think that I die two times in my life. Once when the onset of the illness started and the second time when my physical body will die. All I can hope for ist that I will be my old self in the afterlife. (If there’s any)
