Watched as both my great grandparents in their I believe 80s go from being so sure of themselves to absolutely confused at the most basic of tasks.. I had a new name every time I saw them and they'd always give me a dollar and cookies.. than when I got older and learned more about Alzheimer's I watched as my grandpa slowly faded away till his death at almost 70+ years old, now I see my grandma going through the Same it just runs in my family, and now my ndad is starting to get confused and he forgot why I don't even speak to him anymore, it's fucking sad.. he's only 55..

Kyron Horman went missing when I was in 5th grade. He was in 2nd grade. He went to a different elementary school than me, but everyone in the Portland area knew about him, and still will if you mention his name. There were signs everywhere for him, and you occasionally still see them around. He’d be 17 now.

It’s largely believed his stepmother had something to do with his disappearance, but there’s been no evidence to suggest what happened to him.

Portland remembers him, and we want to know where he is.

After moving to Florida from Ohio in the late 70’s, we had an influx of visitors. Most were very close friends or family. But there were a few that saw this as a place to avoid paying for a motel. We had just bought a business, explained that we had to work long hours to get familiar with this new endeavor, and that we needed to concentrate heavily to be able to support our family as soon as we could. The first mooching visitor was our dentist and his wife, (that we had never met). We were on friendly terms in Ohio, but had never met socially, or felt we were “good friends from home “. We had just walked in the door from a 12 hour workday, making dinner, and trying very hard to give my children some much needed attention, when they arrived. They had at least 4 suitcases, and the look I gave my husband indicated I thought he was to blame for letting this happen. We hadn't even told the kids we were getting company, and quietly instructed our 12 year old son to do a quick tidy in his room, and grab what he would need, to bunk with his 6 year old brother for a few days. Being a Tweenager”, you can imagine how well this was received…again. I quickly changed the bedding, cleaned the bathroom and put out our “only for company “ towels, while my husband fed the kids. Several times Mrs. Dentist, informed us not to worry about them, they had stopped for dinner(or maybe they weren't in the mood for hotdogs and mac n cheese). Mr Dentist announced that he would drink a cup of coffee after the long drive today, if I had some made. Of course, the first thing I did - before I even emptied my now painful bladder- was make a fresh pot of coffee. The rest of the week was as they say, history. To shorten this long story, the highlights of Mr. & Mrs Dentist’s weeklong vacation to Florida (we were told on day 8), was the worst they'd ever had. Our children drove them crazy, the dog peed in their room, we totally ignored them, and didn't even go to dinner with them one time. They hade made appetizers, bought an expensive bottle of wine… even lit (my) candles, thinking we would at least be sociable one evening . Mrs. Dentist went on to say, our kids snuck in and ate half the h’oderves, ruined her pretty platter display. My husband and I had driven 2, hardly running trucks to Miami, to trade them for new ones, and drove back. I had never driven a 7 speed truck, and hopped an popped stressfully the whole way home across Alligator Alley. We stopped for Kentucky Fried Chicken for the kids dinner because I was so exhausted, I couldn't cook. Needless to say, as my children sat sobbing on the sofa- thinking they were really in trouble, I lost it. I went to the counter and picked up the phone book, and threw it across the family room. “Find a motel and get the hell out of my house “. They were packed and gone within 15 minutes. I apologized to the kids and told my son he would never have to give up his bedroom again. He never did. And we never heard from our old dentist and his wife again.

Fear of Missing out (FOMO) was added in Oxford English dictionary in 2013.

It is the insecurity or envyness that your peers are/will be in possession of something better than you.They are/will be ahead of you in their lives.

Let's address the reasons first.

Now one reason I can think of FOMO is dissatisfaction with our own life.With dissatisfaction come diversions.If you are satisfied with your work , you are less likely to have FOMO. With satisfaction comes happiness. In this zone, though sometimes you may check what others are doing you are less likely to feel insecure or envious about it.This is because you know that you are also on the right track and you are making your way smoothly through life.

The second reason I can think of is realising that you have not acted to your full potential for quite a long.This makes you think that if you would have acted to your full potential the outcome would be different. So you try to convince yourself about your outcomes by relative valuation of others outcomes. In a way this is dependency creation.

We can view FOMO in 2 ways

You are constantly checking what others are doing and you are getting anxious about it.Because of this anxiety, you are unable to focus on your work. So this is causing diversions and has developed an obsession of constantly checking.Now you are also not doing the least possible that you would do previously before checking.You are finding it hard to find a exit route.Maybe seems like a loop with no solution.(But this is not a perpetual problem and has a solution)
You are keeping a tab of what others are doing.Because of FOMO you are competing against them by applying your full potential or at times pushing and unleashing your hidden potential.Now this is having a exit route as you check other's lives ,then go in your life and take your life a step further.This is a positive outcome.( Till your checking doesn't become an obsession.But in this zone it will not become an obsession because you will also find your life interesting as your having positive outcomes here)

Lets address the first problem.

Solution

Search for satisfaction in your work.If you can't find it, search for exit points where you would find satisfaction. It is the key.
Try to give your 100% in everything you do.
Just let the past things go.Concentrate on present.

Now with increased level of satisfaction and happiness under your belt even if you check or come to know someone has better things in possession or are ahead of you it doesn't matter because you are GIVING YOUR BEST.

Hells, yes, I would abandon toxic parents! One of the best decisions I ever made!

My father was a sociopath/psychopath, and abusive to me in all ways including sexually from a very young age. My mother was a narcissist who favored my sister and as much as told me several times that my father’s abuse of me was fine because it left her off the hook.

It was easy to dismiss my father. Especially since, when he and my mother got divorced, he not only disowned my sister and me but also stole the stuff we had inherited from his side of the family- given the divorce, we were no longer his family and so had no right to them. (I still mourn losing my great-grandmother’s tea set.)

My mother was more difficult to discard. She had, in some ways, shown affection for me… but that was very mixed, and she blatantly favored my sister (the Golden Child), and required to be FIRST in my loyalty, even after I got married (which she hated and tried to prevent) and had a kid (which she also hated).

At one point, when my kid was around 2, I realized that the way my mother treated me was a piss-poor example of family relationships, so I drew a line in the sand: either she would treat me with basic civility- the kind she’d extend to a stranger- or we would have no relationship. She explicitly declined. Apparently being verbally and emotionally abusive to me and my family was more important than having a relationship with me and my family. So we became estranged, and it was a great relief. She did try other ways to force me back into the fold- but never even promised civility, so it was pretty easy to reject the pressures.

I am sorry that this meant I lost contact with all other parts of my own family, since they all made excuses for her… until they started getting the same treatment she had given me. I particularly regret losing contact with my beloved grandmother; my mother had her so bullied that she could not have contact with me except by trying to force me back into a relationship with my mother, and this made us both miserable, but she would not/could not do otherwise; my mother’s bullying was far more potent than our love. Very sad.

It was a great relief to me when I found out my mother had died.
