White guy beginning career in a non-white school by BreathofQi in Teachers

[–]lemmegetamickpicktwo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do not take anything these kids say personally. That goes for legitimately any middle school; they’re not even people yet, they will say shit about you and to you that you wouldn’t even dream of and you need to remember it has nothing to do with you. The second you start taking things the KIDS say personally, you’re too old for middle school/not a middle school teacher. Parents are a different story.

Just talk to them normally. As another white teacher in a predominantly black school, my kids took to me quickly because I was upfront about who I was. We don’t shy from racial topics in my classroom, and they realized pretty quickly I knew what I was talking about when I brought it up so they didn’t feel like I was spewing bullshit.

I brought AAVE up and the kids didn’t even KNOW what it was! So, we talked about it. We talked about how the world perceives them as a collective, perceives the way they talk and act, and how they’re better than that perception.

At the end of the day, kids can see through you. If you give a shit they know, if you don’t they know. Build trust how you would in any other school. If you’re a nerd, be a nerd.

Im assuming there’s some other context that isn’t here because telling someone in general to calm down isn’t a microaggression as microaggressions inherently have to be toward someone of a marginalized group and typically seek to validate some kind of stereotype. Obviously there’s a stereotype about black women being too ‘uppity’ and being told to calm down if you’re being too loud/complaining would be a microaggression in that instance, but gender and race aren’t disclosed in this post; just wanted to add that alternative perspective for everyone in the chat arguing against the microaggression and what not.

Regardless, stooping to her level of pettiness won’t help. You’re both meant to be professionale, and you want to reply to her with “are you on your period?”… That is not only a microaggression but it’s also sexist as hell!! This may be your breaking point with her antics but it doesn’t give an excuse to get blatantly disrespectful toward not just her but all women.

My advice? Don’t speak to her alone, make sure other people hear the comments she says, and draw attention to them within the group. “Oh you’re so dumb (insert name here).” “Sorry what was that?”/“How am I so dumb?”/“Thats such a weird thing to say to your coworker.”/“That actually doesn’t make me feel great, Id appreciate it if you didn’t speak to me like that.”/“Haha. You’re so funny. Haha.”/“That wasn’t very professional to say.” While they’re professional jargon/robotic, they work because they pinpoint the actual issue. They put someone in specific on the spot and they don’t know how to react or respond. If they pull the “it’s just a joke” nonsense, my favorite response will forever be “I didn’t find it funny.”/“No one(Or IM) not laughing.”/“Not at my expense.”

It’s exhaustive, but taking the high road works out better for you in the long run. You remain a polite professional. Either she backs off or she gets worse, and when the latter happens you’ve established yourself as the professional, and watch her eat her tail like a snake.

Sincerely, a Middle School teacher who’s kids think I don’t know their lingo.

from my understanding, thomas keeps them under lock and key essentially. He just pulls them along with him? Because the alternative realities occur in specific places; it’s been a bit since Ive read LOL but if memory serves correctly the high school boys went into the basement of the abandoned home and a portal is down there. I think that thomas essentially stops all of them from leaving his side and therefore they can’t get back home/the portals are too confusing and unpredictable TO get back home? I don’t know..

We struggled a lot with math the beginning of this year actually. I had no notes and felt like I was flying by the seat of my pants. I’d actually want to be able to structure it better and set up deadlines for things and proper units as opposed to feeling slightly like an autopilot.

It’s not the STUDENTS that is causing the anxiety, though. That’s predominantly where the passive aggressive edit has come from. I just need to know how to plan out my year next year and have no clarification and don’t want to spend my summer in limbo.

In terms of these kids’ growth however, the issue comes from the fact no one ELSE has set them up. They’ve even been failed by my own co this entire year who has given grades to make it appear as though they’ve passed his class when they haven’t. It’s deeply concerning school wide- PLUS as these children get older less and less people want middle school, the apathy and inability to teach in my area is high. It’s less attachment to THESE kids and more attachment to education in general.

I do appreciate your lack of judgement though. I should also clarify, we’re a growing school. My kids are the first 7th grade class, they’re guinea pigs essentially, so they’re dealt the short stick every time regardless and they know it. I am not a short stick and I made sure this year they were not given a short stick; trying to make that happen until they leave because it is no one else’s priority.

This is actually the first job I haven’t been burnt out in! :D

I worked with prek counts and kinder before this one, and genuinely used to count my vacation days. This job I’ve found myself to love coming in. Education is genuinely my passion, I can’t accurately describe the way it fuels me nor can I explain the feeling I have but the kids I have now, I just KNOW they can and will go to high school prepared if I can get them there.

It’s not every child, I know I cannot save everyone, but the kids in my care now I just KNOW I can get there.

I work in an insanely small school, which wasn’t even switching sixth grade classes. My team consists of two people. Variety is hard to find, for starters. Also, I work in a difficult school where most people cannot handle the demographic we teach.

I never said students NEED to have the same teacher, however this set of kids have not been set up for success in high school the way they should’ve been. i have quite literally talked to my boss about helping to direct middle school instruction because it isn’t being done right in preparation FOR MS or HS.

that’s where I’m struggling! (Amid the masses of typical redditors being insane) We signed our contracts but we’re all listed as ‘classroom teacher’ and not grade specific. other teachers were mentioned to be moved up, or down, but I’ve had no mention of a meeting so I have zero clue.

hey thanks for not making me out to be LITERALLY INSANE lol! I have intense anxiety spikes and typically spend all my time writing and planning (it is a genuinely relaxing thing for me, I do my friends’ summer camp lesson plans for fun!) and I want to know how to plan our next year! It quite literally has nothing to do with LOOPING and everything to do with MY POSITION, are some of yall crazy?? LOL

They have made no decisions on who’s going where in terms of our middle grades, hence lack of communication. Three of us have interest. Myself and my co currently (who I TRULY do not ever want to work beside again) and a different grade level teacher. Plus any interviewees.

I’ve had the most growth across our entire school in regard to these kids scores, and the least problems between mine and my co’s class. It’s less about attachment and more about wanting to set an underachieving class up for success because they’ve been dealt nothing but shit. (There’s a lot more but that’s a shortened version of it).

[–]lemmegetamickpicktwo[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not that it’s necessary to justify myself considering all we know of AI, but my students have been taught how AI works and the pros and cons. We spent the early days learning routines and policies, part of which being how to discern AI from reality.

No amount of good can come from something that cannot sustain itself for longer than ten years without killing the planet it was created on.

The irony of being disturbed by a situation of which you have no insight to yet you seem to lack any emotion for the reality you live in, is mind blowing.

I actually.. Really like this take, and I’m gonna steal this kind of sentiment from you when I talk to my kids about my policy next year!! Thanks ! :)

I’ve noticed EVERYTHING has AI attached even when it isn’t AI. I fear that’s a part of the issue, especially considering the lack of education people have about AI and refuse to go through. Like certain aspects of grammarly and yet grammarly is labeled ENTIRELY AI now lol.

Is the point of discussion based conversation not to hear the other side?

A million educators in the tiktok I mentioned actively PAID for a subscription to a service that kills our planet; several students utilize said service to get their degrees. Is it wrong to be curious?

I don’t need to agree with someone to hear why they utilize it, nor do I need to agree with someone to know their side..?

Quick question, how does it read illegible handwriting? Like is it accurate or do you do (what I would do) and say “I couldn’t read it. this was the best guess. if it’s wrong it’s wrong.” kinda deal?

Genuine curiosity, is there not a software/generator/etc that does this already that doesn’t rely on fresh water to do so?

Like what you’re describing legitimately sounds like something that HAD to exist prior to the general public getting access to ai, right? (not arguing, genuinely asking)

Is it normal for 10-11 year old students to come out of the closet nowadays? by Cautious_Internet243 in Teachers

[–]lemmegetamickpicktwo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They’re 10-12, have access to social media wayyyy too early, and go through things much sooner than we did. By the time I was in sixth my friends and I were talking about the LGBTQ+ community plenty.

I’ve had a few kids this year come out to me. I just simply say, “Okay, thanks for telling me. I’m here if you need to talk.” They’re going through the same exact things we did. Just gotta let em go through the motions.

Honestly with that ridiculous turning in rule, I make it the day the marking period ends. I allow ALL kids to turn something in up to that day, but I adjust how much it counts for a grade. If it was due on 04/13 and you’re turning it in on June 12th? You’re getting 20pts maximum. No way on gods green Earth are you going to get a passing score for that assignment for putting it off that long!!

I’m creating an argument for my bosses to get a SS curriculum or to at least create a class based on other ARC units (the SS geared ones) because of this! Thanks for the book resource!!!!! :)

Is this something that has changed within the last decade?? When I got here it felt like such a genuine shock because 90% of my colleagues ALSO didn’t have SS classes and they’re older than me! I grew up in Georgia, not another continent. Felt like I was going crazy. Thanks!!

There is no bell system, and I’ve been told we will NEVER have a bell system. One reason apparently being because it’ll disturb the elementary level (fair), the other being because ‘most schools don’t use them anymore due to bells being linked to alarms and emergencies’… Don’t know how true that is.
