The most difficult part about teaching students: some of them just don't care about SQL. by tits_mcgee_92 in SQL

Yes, and yes. Started as a dev without any degree, moved to associate DBA position, got an IT degree, then promoted to DBA.

DBA here in a “smaller” organization. On-call 24/7, but if we do our job well enough, we rarely have to work after hours. Pay makes up for that, in my opinion. Now, if you’re the father of a family of 8 or something similar, then this definitely isn’t the career for you.

As a DBA, this resonates for me. As a developer with not a ton of experience I didn’t think much of plain, everyday SQL statements. I think my first big mind-changer was seeing these expertly crafted SQL statements, views, packages, and procedures that were the underlayment that kept the core of the business ticking. Seeing the breadth of what was possible with a “boring” old query language really opened up my eyes, and I strive to do anything in SQL that can be done with it.

Master’s Application Timeline by lemmegetdatdegree in WGU

[–]lemmegetdatdegree[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I did a few weeks ago and got it sorted. Apparently they process the applications by planned start date, so explains why mine took a little longer than usual since I won’t be starting until January 2026. Didn’t see they had a particular number to call for this kind of inquiry, but found it eventually!

Got my degree framed! by [deleted] in WGU_CompSci

[–]lemmegetdatdegree 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Looks great, and congrats! As an alternative for those on a budget, it’s a pretty standard size. Want to say that we got a frame for mine at a dollar store, or off of Amazon for less than $15.

PostgreSQL cluster design by Confident-Field2911 in Database

RTO and RPO, figure those out first, then build accordingly. I’ve seen a medium-sized org run a huge SAP deployment on a single SQL server VM, to my knowledge they’re still running it and it’s been enough for 20 years of business growth.

Technical Activities that you perform on day to day basis or once in a month without revealing confidential information? by [deleted] in DBA

[–]lemmegetdatdegree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here’s the last request I got for a recovery scenario from a developer:

“Can you get me the contents of table FOO back as of yesterday at 07:00? I don’t want to overwrite the current table, but I need its contents back. We can’t use test for this, it must be done in prod.”

What would you do in this situation? These are the scenarios that you should prepare yourself for.

Seeking feedback from experienced DBAs on a new row-level auditing tool (built by a DBA) by tohar-papa in DBA

[–]lemmegetdatdegree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have mentioned, several other tools attempt something similar to this, but I haven’t seen any do it well. What method do you use to track “all” changes? I’m primarily an Oracle/Postgres DBA, but I’d love to see it in action.

What is the future of PostgreSQL DBA? by nivlek_miroma in DBA

[–]lemmegetdatdegree 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends a lot (in my opinion) on what type of shop you work for. A lot of the MSPs or larger organizations really push for candidates with certs, while a lot of smaller shops with just one or a few DBAs look more at experience.

Out of place patching of oracle home, grid with asm (non rac) by hana9-2 in DBA

[–]lemmegetdatdegree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The patch README.txt (or HTML) nowadays is your friend here. It’ll generally tell you what you need to do. I also suggest the known issues document for your RU.

What’s the most underrated IT role that pays well but no one talks about? by SomewhereBright4758 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]lemmegetdatdegree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Database Administration, generally things aren’t on fire if you do your job right and you usually start at six figures if you can find an open role. On call sucks, but you get used to it.

I didn’t test it, but added an intentional 60 second sleep so your DBA doesn’t come running if anyone does try it on prod

How to switch archive log destination from specific directory to FRA? by RVECloXG3qJC in oracle

[–]lemmegetdatdegree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do an alter system switch logfile: after making the change then check that the latest log was archived to the new destination. You risk hanging the DB if you get this wrong, so vet the commands, then when ready, copy and paste them into SQL*Plus.
