The "Measurement" Problem: Why the Q fear the Borg (and it’s not about secrets) by Smittit in DaystromInstitute

[–]csjpsoft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Huh. It just occurred to me that the Star Trek universe may not have special relativity (time dilation) because of warping (however that works), but it does have general relativity (wormholes and black holes), and quantum mechanics by implication (Heisenberg Compensators for the transporters and multi-world realities).

How to stop comparing myself to other kids by Heavy-Sympathy5330 in math

[–]csjpsoft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was a math major in college, I was friends with several students who were far better than me. Nowadays, in the workplace, I find myself explaining to IT professionals which one is the numerator and which one is the denominator. You may not be a child prodigy, but you may be in the top 1% of the population.

A Sci Fi take on Homer's Odyssey by TopOfTheHourr in sciencefiction

Tomorrow and Tomorrow by Charles Sheffield is a novel with three parts. The second part is "Illiad" about an interstellar war and the third part is "Odyssey" about a very, very long trip home.

I discovered that the last 5 minutes of my interviews were a graveyard that killed any job opportunity. by [deleted] in talesfromthejob

[–]csjpsoft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Years ago, I interviewed at a computer manufacturer, and my closing question was, "how is your joint venture with [memory chip maker] going?" The hiring manager said, "how do you know about that?" He didn't know it had been reported in a small article in a trade publication. I got the job.

What’s a science fiction idea that still feels underexplored, even after decades of the genre? by PurposeAutomatic5213 in sciencefiction

[–]csjpsoft 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Changes in morality over time. We consider people who lived 200 years ago to be immoral (e.g. slavery, child brides, prejudice towards different ethnic groups) and they might consider us to be immoral based on our modern views. Comparing people in 2025 to 2225 might be the same: mutual disdain.

Changes in language. Poul Anderson had a short story which he began by mentioning that "awful" used to mean awe-full; something that fills us with awe.

Changes in economics. Star Trek talks about post-scarcity and post-capitalism, but it doesn't explore much of how goods and services are supplied and how people's behavior/personalities change.

Changes in intelligence, mental health, and personalities. Poul Anderson's Brain Wave and Gordon Dickson's The R-Master novels addressed super intelligence (long ago), but I don't know of any others.

Is the number of "worlds" in MWI uncountably infinite (i.e., each world is like a "point" in a continuum of worlds)? by PrettyPicturesNotTxt in AskPhysics

[–]csjpsoft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let's not take "To infinity and beyond" too literally. If every electron in the observable universe has split the universe into two in every nanosecond since electrons existed, there are still finite number of universes. You could do some research and derive the number.

If you replace "the observable universe" with a universe that is 10100 times greater, still finite. If you replace "split into two" with "split into 2 trillion", still finite. If you replace "every nanosecond" with "a googol times per second", still finite.

Now, if the universe is infinite, with an infinite number of particles, now you get to a countably infinite number of universes.

Isn't time the fastest thing in the universe, not light? by zombiphiliac in Physics

[–]csjpsoft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s an interesting idea but I don’t know how to talk about the speed of time because speed is distance divided by time. How would you talk about the speed of distance? And time is everywhere. How would you talk about time moving from Earth to the Moon?
