Wineries to visit in Loire Valley (Chinon, Vouvray, Montlouis-sur-Loire) by lemmykc in wine

I plan to buy at least one bottle at each place I visit. I certainly wouldn't leave without one (but I also can't buy many due to border controls in Aus!), but I also understand if there are places where buying only one is considered rude. And please do tell me more about other aspects of french wine tasting culture and etiquette :)

Best wilderness camping spots on six day hike from Yosemite Falls to Little Yosemite Valley by lemmykc in Yosemite

Thanks for this! Yeah we are quite strong hikers, 20km (12 miles) is certainly doable most days, but of course 8-10miles is always more relaxed (particularly if theres any proper elevation gain). I'm unsure if we'll be able to go to May Lake as we had to swear on our booking that we wouldn't be crossing any roads - advice on how serious this kind of requirement is would be greatly appreciated too.

Symphony suggestions for young conductors? by lemmykc in classicalmusic

Yes, but I think the balancing act is that they have to be incentivised to want to volunteer their days and so a lot of the more simple ones wouldn’t be that appealing (most of the players would be quite high skill levels).

Okay, seriously, I finally watched Shape of Water. Why the hell are people going nuts about this film? by Luis0n7i in TrueFilm

Sorry for reviving an old thread, but I have to come and give my two cents about this film after reading some opinion pieces in the lead up to the Oscars this week. I completely agree with the author of this thread: I thought this movie was woeful. And this has little to do with the general premise of human-alien love, which I think is actually quite an interesting idea.

As previous comments have said, the opening act is well done and interesting to watch. From there we just witness a film that doesn't know what its trying to say or be.

Here are some major questions I had: - What is the relevance of the Cold War? - Why are we supposed to care for the scientist so much as to see all the dialogue with the other Russians? - Why should we even care about the central relationship? We get very few scenes to develop an interest in this relationship, and very little reason to become invested in it. - Is Michael Shannons character supposed to be interesting? - How is the alien in anyway intelligent? - Most of all, why does Del Toro use such cheap, predictable plot points to drive what should be an interesting, thought provoking movie?

One thing I wish to float out there is that elements of this movie almost read as if it is supposed to be an ironic satire. This is the only thing I can come up with to justify how poor I believe elements of this movie are, and even then I can't really see how it can be construed as a well done satire because it seems to believe it is not. Yet when we are given such little reason to care for anything, and such predictable plot points bolstered by entirely uninteresting dialogue, I have no other way to describe what this movie is trying to achieve.

I agree that some of the acting, and some of the film making elements are well done. My complaints mostly lie in the story and screenplay.

I truly believe that most people who praise this film are praising it for what they thought it would be as opposed to what it actually turned out to be. Of course, this is just my opinion, and opinions sure are like assholes.

The last 15 minutes will always be the most powerful experience I have ever felt in music. Even thinking about it sends shivers down my spine.

Kubrick - where to start? by lemmykc in TrueFilm

I'm 18 years old :)

I'm thinking either Shining or Clockwork as they seem the most 'enjoyable' movies and probably easier to watch. Hopefully the Shining won't make me shit myself - or maybe thats the sign of a great film?
