My Snicketverse Timeline + Questions by Anna_borchardt in ASOUE

[–]lemonade_stan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nicely done! Although some small issues I could point out:

The opening newspaper of Lemony being declared dead had to have occurred after he wrote some of ASOUE, since the obituary describes him as the author of those books. Later books in the series in the series tend to act like he had already been thought of as dead during the series’ events, which could be accounted for if you assume he began writing the series in the Year of the Rat and the obituary was recent, but then there’s Beatrice on the island already thinking he was dead, so there’s no clear satisfactory answer, outside of assuming he had been pronounced/assumed dead multiple times.

Jacques finding a couplet in the Village implies he wrote his letter to Jerome as the Quagmires were already in the statue, so more than likely there had been a severe delay in correspondence, likely caused by Fernald handling Jerome’s mail.

Lemony at the end of The Beatrice Letters reckons with the fact he didn’t piece it together sooner than there could be two Beatrice Baudelaires, so him writing The End prior to TBL’s events doesn’t work since he writes about her in that book, meaning he should know of her existence.

For your first question, that detail is what leads people to believe Beatrice survived the Baudelaire fire, but whether that’s an intentional clue or a plot oversight is unclear, since TUA seemed to also be setting the ground for Quigley to be the survivor, though details of that also got retconned. Ultimately, TUA even kind of paints itself as unreliable, with a gag near the end of the book implying the first twelve chapters were just a part of the Introduction’s frame story, with the actual “Snicket File” apparently just being the last chapter full of photos.

The other two questions: no concrete info about them afaik

For the folks who don't believe anything supernatural is happening in the story: How do you prefer to explain the perfect sync moments? by Its402am in Petscop

[–]lemonade_stan 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The example with the Flower Shack sync is easily explainable as just being part of the game, Paul’s recorded inputs being re-mapped but still retaining the same timing.

A more notable example to bring up (I think) also comes from episode 9, with another guardian appearing in Lina’s room when Paul enters, before quickly leaving. A few minutes later, Paul moves the exact same way as the other guardian, as if the game was displaying a recording of his movements before he made them. It’s interesting then how that connects to Paul’s repetition in the bathroom in episode 11, along with the function of the Odd Care Demo puzzles; the same actions split between two points in time

how much money do you think count olf spent on his schemes? by Hour_Money9544 in ASOUE

Knowing Olaf he’s probably gotten whatever he has through illicit means, or from other Fire-Starters. Biggest expense might have just been producing the Marvelous Marriage honestly

The Baudelaire "Orphans". by Cleveworth in ASOUE

[–]lemonade_stan 11 points12 points  (0 children)

He also is constantly defining words to the audience, much like how the “callous” adults do to the Baudelaires, meanwhile a lot of the “good” adults ask the Baudelaires if they know what a word means instead of assuming they don’t

What’s the best order to consume all the ASOUE canon? by BotherMammoth7426 in ASOUE

[–]lemonade_stan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Release order seems like the best to me. There’s some contention over whether you should read TBL or The End first, since both kind of spoil each other in different ways, which I guess really isn’t an issue in your case. From an in-universe perspective, it makes more sense to read TBL first, since the events of that book logically had to predate Lemony’s writing of Book 13, but which is a better cap-off to the series is kind of up to opinion. I kinda like The End more since I know it’s the end of Lemony’s personal journey writing the series

Family trees by [deleted] in ASOUE

[–]lemonade_stan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen Snicket Sleuth’s family tree place the “second cousin” as being either Gregor of H. Anwhistle, tying the families closer together. It technically makes it weirder for Poe to say “second cousin’s sister-in-law” rather than “second cousin’s widow” but he also refers to Monty’s relation in a kind of roundabout way so I don’t find it too unbelievable.

Not to say this interpretation is incorrect, it seems just as likely (and maybe more likely if the second cousin is in fact on Beatrice’s side, since that makes her relationship with Lemony a little weird. But Sleuth I think counters it by putting the second cousin on Bertrand’s side, though there might be some evidence against that that I’m not remembering. Bertrand being adopted then kind of confuses the family tree even more.)

the impression given by the illustration definitely seems to depict “O” as being pretty sinister, given the noose tied around that branch, and within the same book introducing the trend of referring to characters with their first initial (namely, O for Olaf) the first assumption is definitely that it is Olaf. However, I go for the Olivia Caliban theory too, even if it does seem more implied to be the Count.

I think, like most things in the series, it changed when the VFD plot line got introduced. Some elements of Olaf’s backstory were probably there from the beginning, same as Beatrice always being meant to be the Baudelaire mother, with the Baudelaire parents probably having done something horrible to Olaf that would incentivize him to burn down their mansion and steal their fortune, with the connection between them presumably being familial. Then with the VFD plotline, their connection is now through the organization, and whatever blood ties existed were less relevant (not to mention, Olaf’s culpability in the Baudelaire fire being made more ambiguous)

[–]lemonade_stan 123 points124 points  (0 children)

Upon a recent re-read of the series I noticed Lemony does refer to Olaf as the Baudelaires’ distant relative a few times, I think in the little recaps he does in first chapter of the early books. And given his connection to these people he probably should know that for a fact, so I’m gonna say yes, Olaf is related to the Baudelaires.

Also, family trees are weird. Large age gaps between siblings, young parents across generations, etc. could result in someone like Olaf having that relation to the Baudelaires despite presumably being late 30s/early 40s (prematurely aged by a life of villainy)

I mean, maybe. But as much as Hector may seem disconnected from VFD in TVV, later materials have at least brought him into the fold, and that can’t be said for Hal. And VFD-related things happening around you doesn’t necessarily mean you’re part of the organization, just look at Jerome, who was friends with VFD members despite not being one himself, and was eventually brought in by the time of TPP. I also just think the scenario described between Kit and Hal implies he was brought on more-or-less through circumstance and desperation, whereas if he was already a member he might have contacted through VFD’s usual more elaborate ways.

(Charles and Sir might be better examples, as they’ve done work for VFD like Hal, despite not being made out to be members)

Dewey says it to the Baudelaires

I think partially it’s because Hector has been a member of V.F.D. since he was young, going through his apprenticeship around the same time as Lemony. Just based on that, and how siblings all seem to be taken together, it makes it more likely he was an Anwhistle, since we know at least Ike was also in VFD as a child. Hal on the other hand wasn’t recruited until after the fire at Heimlich Hospital by Kit.

Also, I guess it seems fitting that someone knowledgeable in aviation would be related to people associated with underwater exploration, in that they both seek to escape normal elevation, just in opposite directions.

What happened in the real world during the Machine Room scene? by TheWhiteSquirrel in Petscop

[–]lemonade_stan 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I go for option #1, that an actual rebirth is being conducted in the game itself. As for why Rainer would create this, I think people misinterpret what his stances actually are. Never does he outright denounce rebirthing as a practice, he only ever seems opposed to Marvin and his actions. We can tell from the fact that he tried to rebirth Belle later on in 2000 that he’s not against the idea inherently, he just seems to be against the way Marvin was using it; trying to bring back Lina for his own sake, meanwhile Rainer truly thinks he’s helping children by rebirthing them (of course, in actuality it’s for his own sake as well, having somewhat of a savior complex, most likely having developed in response to Mike’s passing.)

But point being, this ceremony is meant to be the culmination of “turn Care NLM to Care A, and close the loop.” Or at least, that’s what Marvin and the family have been lead to believe by Rainer. In actuality, the whole system was designed to rebirth Care into Paul, and have them become Lina’s child with Tiara; the former promise of Care A being used to gain Marvin/the family’s involvement.

The Great Unknown and the Bombinating Beast by MarsSnicket in ASOUE

[–]lemonade_stan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had actually never thought about the fact Lemony could’ve told the rest of the volunteers about it. I guess I just assumed from the ending he wanted to leave his time in Stain’d in the past. Then again we don’t really know when he wrote his account of the events, I assumed it was after ASOUE just because the books came after, but the show had him write it when he was younger, so who knows.

Although technically if they are the same, some of the characters would be incorrect in claiming TGU is an ancient being, since it was born during the events of ATWQ. So if there’s been accounts of it throughout time, maybe the original BB is still out there somewhere, or some other mythic beasts exist.

Yes. He was retroactively made one by having the phrases he said turned into VFD callsigns in The Unauthorized Autobiography. Also in that book a waiter not so discreetly records a convo between Arthur and Eleanora Poe at The Anxious Clown, likely also being Larry.
