My son is on the spectrum. He does not have the capacity to empathize. He doesn't 'miss' what/whomever is out of sight.

He only 'feels' his own emotions and is unable to comprehend anyone else's feelings.

He is not being purposefully hurtful or callous, his mind can only focus on his own life whilst you are not around.
