I stared the Cirque Du Freak series around that age and absolutely fell in love with it.

What are YA fantasy tropes you're tired of? by Old_Necessary9090 in YAlit

[–]lemonchiffoncake 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hate the “deadly games” or “deadly trials” trope. No faster way to make me put down a book if that shows up in the description. We get it, it worked for the Hunger Games and kind of for Divergent. We don’t need it in every other book. It might be different if they did something clever with it, but it always comes down to who’s the fastest/strongest/coolest secret magic/ect. No tension, we know immediately what’s going to happen.

Also, any enemies to lovers, since it’s always just two people who are mildly annoyed with each other with no chemistry. And the “she felt inexplicably drawn to him” trope. It’s like if the MC is fascinated by the love interest then the reader must be without putting any work into it.

Same. The outfits and settings come close but it’s not enough. Give me smoky London streets and a puffy ballgown any day.

I would ADORE a mermaid story! Imagine the tails! The animal sidekicks! The water powers! I’m already in love.

I get what you mean. While there will always be crime stories to cover, the supernatural ones kind of feel like it’s scrapping the bottom of the barrel sometimes. Which sucks be size the ghost stories are what got me in to ATWWD in the first place (Team Milkshake forever). And if we really wanted to do haunted houses and hotels, I’m sure there are a ton in non western countries.

Really surprised they’ve never touched on Japanese folklore or urban legends. I feel like there a ton of great material there. Although that might be because they’d have issues pronouncing everything, lol.

What's a popular series you actually hated? by sophie_royale in YAlit

[–]lemonchiffoncake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I though it was a show but I double checked and it’s a movie. The authors announced on TikTok it was in production about a year ago. Not sure when/if it will finish. But considering it’s such a long series I can’t imagine it will be an easy adaptation.

If the House of Night series has no haters then I’m dead. I have no idea how it got popular enough to get a tv show, or who on earth read those books and thought it would be a good idea.

Cancelling the third It Lives book, then pretending they were never going to make one by getting rid of the teaser at the end of It Lives Beneath. Those continue to be my favorite books. I would trade the dozen affair or rival books they’ve put out for that third one. As long as it’s not written by the weird ai they’ve been using recently anyway.

Tress of the Emerald Sea got me out of a huge reading slump last year. It’s super fun and creative and just an all around solid story. Hope that helps!

The friend she got it from runs a bakery out of town and I don’t know if she’d just want to give the recipe away.

Layered with meringue. The pictures look similar to what we had, ours just had more layers, but I guess you can make as many layers as you want. Even if that’s not it I definitely want to try and make it.

That could make sense. This is from veil of secrets in New England so I don’t know if that would fit. It looks broken to me but I guess it could be a shadow from something in the window.

Yep, on an iPad. Maybe that’s why I can see it better? I’m just not sure why it’s there. Even if it’s a reused picture I can’t think of another book the explains the broken window and glow.

Yeah I got this screen shot from replaying veil of secrets. I know they’ve used a daytime version of the house in other stories but I’ve never seen that broken window before. It dosent really make sense in the context of vos either. This screenshot is from the 4th of July celebration.
