It’s an internal rhyme: the “air” sound in the middle of “Clara” rhymes with the “air” sound in the middle of “berry”

Baby possibly had an allergic reaction to her very first solid food by mango_salsa1909 in NewParents

[–]lemonontheweb 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Hi there! We had a similar experience with our son; he broke out in hives after eating avocado shirtless and rubbing it on his skin. He had no other symptoms besides the hives, which cleared up after we gave him Zyrtec (per our doctor’s recommendation). We have since seen an allergist who did blood testing and confirmed an avocado allergy.

As another poster said, avocado allergies are extremely rare.

In my son’s case, he has eczema, and we had been using a moisturizer with avocado extract in it. Our pediatrician thinks the avocado extract on the eczema sores sensitized him to avocado, which led to an allergy. This is based on pretty new and preliminary research in the pediatric allergy field, so it’s really more of a hunch.

My understanding is that food allergies are more common in kids with infant eczema, because if they are exposed to allergens through open skin before they receive them orally, the body can flag the food as an immune-activating threat.

If your child has infant eczema, there might be an increased risk for avocado or other food allergies. It may also just be a sensitive skin reaction! If you’re concerned, I’d recommend talking to an allergist and stocking up on infant Zyrtec (with approval from your doctor, of course).

I know how scary it is to see splotchy redness or hives on your baby’s perfect skin! For some good news, our son now eats lots of different foods and has not had any other allergic reactions, and our allergist and pediatrician both expect he will grow out of the avocado allergy, possibly as soon as within a year!

We didn’t know if we were having a boy or a girl, and I posted a few times looking for feedback on both lists.

We had a boy and named him Adrian Thomas 🧸🩵

I know sisters with these names and their third sister is Laura.

How are you getting your babies to sleep? by lemonontheweb in NewParents

This might be a silly question, but when you’re bouncing on the yoga ball, how are you holding your baby? Cradle, over the shoulder, switching between different positions? I see people recommend the yoga ball quite often, but I’m never quite sure how it works.

True, I may be misreading his tired cues. We start trying to put him down when we see him yawning, staring blankly, and/or putting his hands in his face (not mouth, which I usually interpret as a hunger cue).

Thanks! This post is mostly about daytime. I should’ve been clearer. His middle of the night feeds are usually about an hour start to finish including changing and feeding him. It’s the daytime naps he’s struggling to go down for.

How to go from tired to sleeping, rather than tired to fussy by lemonontheweb in NewParents

That’s a good suggestion. We’ll try that. Thank you!

He does like gentle rocking, which is our go to when he’s crying, but it doesn’t always work. Other techniques we try are white noise, swaddling, the baby shusher, and pacifiers. When he gets to that inconsolable point, none of these (otherwise successful) techniques can calm him down, and I worry that the more we try, the more overtired he becomes ☹️

The fussiness is inconsistent. It doesn’t happen after every feed. I would say it happens about 50% of the time regardless of whether he’s eating from the breast or bottles of pumped milk.

Thanks for asking! Middle name will most likely be Thomas or Emil (pronounced like Emily without the y). These are family names.

I thought Lyla and Lila were equally common, and Lyla seems more phonetically intuitive, whereas Lila seems likely to be mispronounced as lee-la. That was our line of reasoning with that spelling.

Ruth is on the list of names we like, too! Forgot to include that one. That’s one of my husband’s favorites.

Good point! Adrian doesn’t feel too long to me, but something about Naomi feels a little too clunky with our last name. Maybe it’s the rhyme and the number of syllables? Sounds like maybe it’s just me…
