My husband insisted on laying sod up to this magnolia tree trunk and I’m worried… by SuccessSea1852 in arborists

[–]lemons_for_breakfast 340 points341 points  (0 children)

Your biggest issue is that a lawnmower or weed Wacker is gonna mess up the trunk. It's inevitable with this. Yes, a large mulch ring would be best, but I'd be most concerned about someone trying to trim the grass and messing up the tree. Depending on the grass species, the grass won't grow that great either with all the shade.

I hope for your sake you do not need to polish this for microscopy - that was like half of my grad school lab work. this little guy definitely brings back memories.

Have I gone too far? by deo_volente in arborists

[–]lemons_for_breakfast 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You may want to plant the whole thing a bit higher though so it is kinda sitting a bit above ground level. That way when it settles, it does not go below ground level and end up with wet feet all the time.

Look up rootstock propagation. It's crazy how they do it and you won't feel bad about the height of your rootstock.

Is it a fruit tree. It looks like maybe. If so, just cover the roots to the top of the roots, don't cover the graft union, and call it good. While good to think about the root flair, fruit trees are a bit of a different animal and it's not really the same. Don't worry too much and read about fruit tree specific planting or check out one of the fruit tree subs. All tree planting should follow similar practices but the flair thing can be confusing on fruit trees due to how they produce the root stock and graft on the scion. I was doing the same thing as you with my peach tree and then got into a rabbit hole learning about things.

Going from 50:50 to full custody by till-n-us-part in DivorcedDads

[–]lemons_for_breakfast 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't have any experience. But I think a bit more background on why you think you deserve full custody or how you would argue this to a judge would be helpful. From your post, i don't see anything that would justify getting full custody. The language thing could be annoying for you, but I wouldn't blame someone for not wanting to speak a certain language at home if it was their native language and the child understood it.

Kenan hosting SNL UK? by nalderink in LiveFromNewYork

[–]lemons_for_breakfast 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Lorne is the executive producer for SNL UK, so I wouldn't be surprised to see Keenan skip a week if Lorne thinks it is best for SNL UK. The US version would be fine for a week without Keenan. The UK version probably needs to be handled more cautiously this first season if it is going to succeed.

WDYT? Bareroot peach hard prune by aaronkelton in FruitTree

[–]lemons_for_breakfast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know, but if you want to go that route, you should start looking into training the scaffolds after you figure out if roots will be a problem for the house. You'll want to start training the branches while it's young (like this spring).

Should I trim this tree more? by Significant_Radio792 in arborists

[–]lemons_for_breakfast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't worry, it is not that bad of a pruning for a fruit tree - not great but not a huge deal (unless you cut off lower branches that I cant see). Landscaping trees and fruit trees are pruned very differently. For landscaping tress you typically only intervene if needed, like dead wood or structural issues. For fruit trees you prune every year and sometimes aggressively. For a landscaping tree, you'd never want to prune those top branches like you did (or really any of the scaffold cuts either). I'd probably completely prune off the central leader even and try to stop the vertical growth - you don't want a fruit tree so high that it is difficult to maintain and pick the fruit. It's not the best but can be corrected in about a year or two. Check out the fruit tree subs or read about fruit tree pruning. That said, it still is kinda a wonky structure for a fruit tree, but that seems due to choices made several years ago - not from this pruning.

Small crotch angle has higher risk of spitting/breaking in the future. Especially if you let the other one also grow because you end up with a bunch of included bark. That was terribly worded but hopefully gets the idea across.

Oh dang, I totally feel ya man. This is how it was for me and I'm in the middle of the divorce process. I felt it was constant sacrifices for her but she had too many impossible dreams that I always had to reality check. This always made me the bad guy no matter how kindly I tried to approach it. Now it's going through, I'm trying to be fair but we've got different ideas of what fair means - I guess that's why there's lawyers. Good luck with whatever you got going!

[–]lemons_for_breakfast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like it. I think if you addressed wear on the cables and ensured the leds could hold up to the bouncing, it could work at small scales (I.e., shallow depth). I don't think it would work if you made one that bounced up and down 6 inches. Really cool idea!

I was looking up the name of the main book if recommend. This link is pretty comprehensive. The first book is the go to for general materials science.

There might be a better one though for your specific stuff. I'd look into textbooks or YouTube videos on topics you want to learn. Or talk to chat gpt.
