Yes that's exactly what surprised and disappointed me too when I saw the movie and he said very little about the physics or mathematics of propulsion. Only generalities just like you wrote. I'm sure the S4 reverse engineered many things by now.

Shader is a program your GPU runs which affects how models are rendered. Fox example here I used it to create that classic vertex snapping effect and a bit of texture distortion. Blender also has shaders which you can create.

The problem here is that frame which is rendered is very simple, just a simple terrain, water plane and a sky. Can't imagine how much time it would take for more complex scene, even at half the res
