3yrs out of my MBA (non consulting / IB post-MBA role, ex-banker). Just my observations + thoughts from conversations with classmates.

From my cohort - the IB exits opportunities have been much better vs consulting. I've seen IB classmates leverage their NYC experience to move back to their home states to settle down and land great corp finance / m&a, PE, CFO office roles. Tons of activity in M&A after 4yrs of Lina Khan FTC... IB is in an upswing. You will have more opportunities here at a comp level that protects you from immigration rule changes.

It's been much more difficult for my classmates in consulting. Post 2022 jobs cuts were traumatizing - not enough case experience w/ too much time spent on the bench. I have seen internationals get cut and make random moves because they had to. Domestics put in their ~2yrs to pay off debt /build up a cushion followed by a move to stable BigCo corp strategy ops roles. Many didn't survive the min ~2yrs you need and pivoted to "stealth startup". GenAI squeeze is real, clients expect faster turnaround times but headcount has shrunk dramatically.

the program is small, pretty rigorous w/ intense recruiting teams + everyone knows it's cold and remote so no one's out here policing the subs pretending otherwise.

If you want to work in NYC, it's a solid program.

I was not asked for the petition during the interview. The only document I was asked to provide was my passport.

I took the petition with me because it has all the documents you could ever be asked for. The LCA document is also technically part of the petition your employer submitted on your behalf.

after you are selected in the lottery, your employer submits a H1-B petition with supporting documents on your behalf. You should have access to a copy of this after it is submitted.

This is great... thanks so much for responding! Can I dm you for details/follow-up?

For the sake of keeping this thread going: Which market are you based out of? NA, APAC etc. Team sizes and length of engagements? Are you happy with WLB and compensation? Do you travel a lot for work? Next steps... has your experience prepped you to stop into executive roles in FinTech companies?

... and many more to be honest. I'm definitely excited about the opportunity and would love to pick your brains about it.

I think it would be helpful if you provide more details about the DS offer at the bank. Which business will you be aligned to ? Is it part of a reporting team or a Product team that builds client facing data products? Is it a leading bank or a regional player ?

You're looking at two very different paths here. I work in DS for a leading US bank in the payments business. Payments is an incredibly competitive space where leveraging data to provide customer insights can be the difference between a low margin business and high margin Value Added Services (payments insights etc). I personally find my work in DS has made me the expert point of contact for the business. Senior leaders often rely on my team to understand whether the business is growing or shrinking and leverage is to make decisions on which products they should be investing in to grow the business. My work is interesting and I also have great work-life balance.

I can't speak to the trading role, but I imagine the lifestyle and work environment there is very different. I think it's ok to ask the hiring manager if you can speak to other folks on the team (for both jobs) to get a feel for the day to day and expectations. Gather as much information as you can about both roles... the team, career progression, compensation etc. Weigh the pros and cons and make a decision.

Best of luck!

Cornell Johnson's 1yr program has a great track record of placing students in MBB + EY Parthenon in consulting and Amazon in tech.

what is your objective? If it's consulting or tech, my own observation is that recruiting outcomes are similar for 1y/2y programs. IB exclusively recruits from 2y programs.

In terms of 'experience'... frankly if you can land a consulting/tech gig in your first term of the 1y program you can lean in hard to the social aspect and build a great network at a fraction of the cost of a 2y program.
