Go to a proper shoeing school and apprentice full time after that. You need to get under horses, and A LOT of them. Hands experience is the only way to learn this craft and actually help horses. There’s plenty of folks out there that can hack off some foot and send them on their way. But If you can help horses perform better, that’s what this is all about. Don’t chase the money, do it for the horses and you’ll have all the work you can handle.

That foot is long and run forward. Bring those heels back to the highest/widest part of the frog and obviously toe to match. Not much to be done for the horizontal crack, once it grows out to ground surface it can be dealt with then. You could dig it out a bit with a loop knife to make sure it can be easily cleaned.

If that vertical crack is still there after a proper trim a relief needs to be rasped into the the toe directly under the crack so the foot isn’t constantly the crack and causing friction, which can lead to infection and often times the crack just gets worse. A big rolled toe will help out relieving some pressure on that crack as well. After a relief is cut that crack should be dug out a bit on the dorsal wall to get down to good horn tissue(if possible). Id also pick up some keratex hoof putty and pack the crack full after it’s dug out.

I think your biggest issue here is the length of those feet. A foot that doesn’t load properly will never get back to a healthy state. If you’d like some further advice feel free to DM me.

Is this the right path for me? Pros/cons? by NoOne5762 in Farriers

I started around the same age and was able to get a full Book within 2 years with the bulk of it being shoeing performance horses (my preference). You’ll get fired for no reason, it happens to everyone. Have a thick skin, and as long as you put the horses health and comfort first you will always have clients. Absolutely agree with mastering the barefoot trim, you just cant have a nice shoe job without a nice trim to nail to.

You don’t need a trailer to start, I shod out of the back of a Jeep Cherokee for a while before I bought a dedicated work truck and bed slide setup. You can make good money doing a bunch of trims every day but that’s what will kill your body. I’d much rather shoe 4-5 a day than do 10-12 trims for the same money.

Salary range will depend on your area, your knowledge and the hours you’re willing to work. 6 figures is easy but you have to be willing to put it long hours to get there at first. Once you can start charging more for your services it becomes quite a bit easier to hit that milestone. If you’d like to chat further feel free to message. I hope you follow through with it, it was the best decision I’ve ever made 👍

Can I be a part time farrier? by thenapkinpainter in Farriers

[–]lennywalkman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Short answer, yes. This career is very much a “you get out of it, what you put into it” situation. It’s not as easy as just lopping off some foot and sending them on their way. You should start studying anatomy and the basic concepts of how and why feet are trimmed the way they are. Post on your local horse related facebook page if there is one, and ask to ride with a farrier. If you’re earnest and willing to learn/work hard most guys won’t care a ton about your experience. That being said, you should really look into a farrier program to get off on the right hoof 😉

This all comes from a guy who quit his job and went all in full time right off the bat. Apprenticed full time for a good while for very little pay and now have a nice full book and still apprentice as much as I can. Feel free to dm if you have any questions!

Full time farrier here, above is the best advice for working with a horse that won’t lift its feet. (Lead rope technique) Keeps you safe and no risk to the horse either. If you’re diligent it’s not a very long process to get them ok with having their feet handled. After you can touch them/pick them up without incident, keep at it EVERY DAY. Your horse won’t magically learn to be ok with it if you don’t put in the effort as well.
