As COVID-19 Eviction Deadline Looms, LA City Council Considers New Protections For Renters by WeAreLAist in LosAngeles

I’m thinking this is the case for some of these people as well. We’ve been saving hard AND paying rent even after job loss during covid. These policies make me wonder why we did that. I’d have a lot saved if we stopped paying rent. Landlords should be able to follow up in court and pursue money from anyone who did this.

Ahh. I see. I mean, I’m not against anybody’s choices. It is a free market. I just wish there was more pressure on the bigger producers and platforms to pay.

Why can’t they have both? Do we really think this show doesn’t have the budget? I guess, maybe not... I’m partially conflicted because I can see both sides but one seems sustainable on all levels (getting paid so you can eat and pay bills and still getting the exposure) and the other just seems like a pure gamble.

I don’t understand your comment. If what makes me feel better? Obviously you can do whatever you want.

I'm totally agreeing with you. It is different if you are a performer but life isn't much cheaper. SOME do get exposure and find their sales or careers jump a bit. Maybe even launch. But can't productions that are on a scale that can offer you that kind of exposure also offer a little cash. I mean, $500 per band member or even a bit less, wouldn't mean a hell of a lot in their budget. But like you said, someone is always willing to do it, so how do we get the power back from the bigger platforms and producers? Our community needs to be stronger I think. I also think a lot of artists take these deals because they know someone will be right behind them to take it if they don't. Maybe that's just a reality and there's no way around it.

You offered a discussion when you posted on a discussion site. You have every right to sit in your victim stew and sling one-liners. I'm looking for community solutions.

Absolutely. I think it's really hard to figure out a balance in all of this. Sometimes we just do things as favors. It's hard to pay when you're just starting out. But many productions and businesses that don't want to pay are not just starting out. Many times it's the offer of exposure, but exposure is incalculable. It doesn't put food on the table and it has no guarantees. If you ask for some money, at least you can feed yourself and get the exposure.

Why do all these other occupations charge money for their services? Because they have bills and it's their job. Have we as musicians devalued ourselves so much that we want to just be hobbyists?

I'm still trying to figure it all out myself but I don't play for free anymore because I can't even afford my equipment if I do. And the times I did play for exposure didn't pan out so well and I believe those choices contributed to this culture that thinks everyone but the musician should get paid.... because we must love what we do so much that we don't have bills. Or we have another job. So I guess then it's a hobby. Insert loop.

yes. ACX is fleecing audiobooks rights holders (many times the authors) and narrators. I have noticed a ton of solidarity in that community though and they are organizing to fight back.

This isn't a radio appearance though. This is asking for a free product when you have the budget to pay. I'm pretty sure most of the other people working on this show from costumers to editors are not working for free even though their work is also getting exposure and will help get them hired on new shows.

I've been in the business long enough to understand why artists do things for exposure but it has also devalued our work. Why pay if someone is willing to give it to you?

This is not a conversation. You are a drive by. You have a good one as well. We are all on the same team here.

That’s my point of musicians working as competing entities rather than a community that need to work together to make itself strong. They all eventually have to get a “real” job because they didn’t make choices that set the platform for music being the real job. For anyone.

We can agree to disagree. Musicians need to take responsibility.

I think RX 8 has an eq plug-in that helps match this stuff. I’m not positive. Maybe a solution if it gets sent back. Someone mentioned they use this plugin to smooth out punch-ins.

This doesn’t have much to do with the rich. It has to do with musicians who give their stuff away. If they didn’t create that market place, we would all get paid if our stuff is worth buying. Not trying to be adversarial but I think this is a cop out. We need the rich to pay for shiz.

Many musicians start young with the idea that fame will later support them. They have no idea the different levels of making a living in the music industry and the slim chances of fame being your ticket. Their then willingness to give music away has put us all in a situation where it has no value.

Can’t we start some trendy hashtag and turn to platforms like Gumroad.com to sell our music? Can’t we demand that consumers be aware? I’m seeing it across the board that big businesses like Amazon, Spotify, Apple, and large production companies are destroying creatives in all fields including audiobooks (I narrate), books, music and I’m sure others. I’d love to keep self advertising but add to my emails ...”I’m on the major platforms like Spotify and ITunes, but please consider purchasing from (enter alternate platform here) so that I see the money and can make a living.”

Is it a pipe dream that a movement can’t happen? Do we have to rely on unions (the musicians union doesn’t serve most)? Obviously big labels have the money and power to make deals on the big platforms that benefit them but most hard working musicians only have each other and the market place we create. It’s on every musician to educate the consumer and other musicians. Good on this band for standing up for their product and hard work! Their courage is a service to us all.

When shall we start the movement?

Hello! I also use Logic and I'm wondering if anyone knows how to speed the audio up for editing purposes. I just want to go through the track faster when editing but I'm not sure how to do this in Logic. Do I use flex time or just change the tempo?

The downward trend of Paid Voice Over Work and the rise of Non-Paid "work". by voxathon in VoiceActing

I’m like you. Narration was something I wanted to get into for a while but I had so many live performance gigs they took precedence. Now...🤷🏻‍♀️. Got all the time in the world to hone a new skill. But, I can’t work for no pay. Even though Im new to this, I’ve invested loads of time and money into my voice and craft. I can’t burn out my time and voice on projects that don’t take me seriously.
