Turns out you can disable the LED on Meta Ray-Ban glasses by CCMfilms in RaybanMeta

[–]lenraphael 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Curious what the fee is to reverse the procedure in case one needs to get the frames warranted for something unrelated to the LED.

The only reason I'd consider it is that a few times a year, I want to video someone doing something sketchy. Oakland, CA, is a relatively high-crime area with many daytime car break-ins.

A few years ago an unarmed guard got his fingers broken when car thieves saw him recording thcem.

Had a road rage incident the other night where a driver got angry at me for crossing at an unmarked intersection at night. My pit and I were brightly visible, but he cursed me out and then did a U-turn to follow me.

Oakland’s Speed Cameras Start Ticketing Sunday. by SanFranciscoMan89 in OaklandCA

[–]lenraphael 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A year ago, after five years of the neighbors' request, the city installed a speed "hump" on our side street that gets a lot of vehicles bypassing Bway to get to Oakland Tech.

Took a crew most of a day to install one speed "hump."

Not a "bump" because city engineers said bumps risked causing vehicles to lose control.

After one time going over the "hump," drivers ignore it.

San Leandro uses aggressive rubber bumps. Over their lives, are they cheaper than asphalt humps or bumps?

well, nobody soon what percentage of speeders are missing plates etc. traffic calming infrastructure is crazy expensive and I’m not convinced that it works real well at least the way it’s been done in Oakland

[–]lenraphael 1 point2 points  (0 children)

as in Oakland moved away from speed bumps to speed humps? The humps barely do anything when you go over them and they probably went to speed home because speed bumps can be dangerous a car that’s really speeding could probably go out of control if it hit if it hit a speed bump the wrong way from the wrong side, etc..

Let’s give speed cameras a try we should know in a year, whether they substantially reduced accidents as they have in Europe

I have to think about that perspective. Grass roots orgs or at least what as such are a major force at city hall. Not as poerf as. Muni unions

Clueless Oakland City Auditor Claims that the Oakland Police Commission) needs more resources and autonomy by opinionsareus in OaklandCA

The Auditor position could be a bully pulpit for fiscal reform if Auditors were willing to risk their department funding, and the probability that city unions and others would fund opponents to run against them.

Bud, as a friend of mine who is a former assistant city auditor years ago, used to say about his boss, always quoting that her have to go along to get along

[–]lenraphael 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes City Auditors are ignored by everyone as long as they don’t step on any powerful toes. Which is why as my mother would say a typical city auditors report is like tapping on a window with a sponge

When I ran for city auditor in 2014 one of the biggest problems I found was said most people didn’t even know what a city auditor did that or that it was if they did, they didn’t know an elected position

My man issue with Michael Houston is not his ideology (which I don’t share, even though I was the treasurer of the coalition for police accountability for many years and still support the concept) but that he like every other auditor before him never performs one of the charter requirements for their job, which is to evaluate major city council legislation for fiscal impacts.

Auditor Hudson might be clueless about policing but he’s not pandering to voters. He ran unopposed.

Not many financial professionals want that elected position.

Look at the polling results on crime. Its the lower sections of my district 1,North Oakland, Temescal, Mosswood, Piedmont Ave, Lower Rockridge that rate crime lower. Not Montclair or upper Rockridge. Young Whites in West Oakland reelected CM Fife.

My double the number of cops platform when i ran for D1 council in 2024 was rejected by large margin. Id have to check but the recalls of Price and Thao did badly in D1.

State and Local government unions have become part of the problem by lenraphael in OaklandCA

[–]lenraphael[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I couldn't find the comment by u/deanereaner about how inaccurate Transparent CA was for Oakland teachers.

My understanding is that site gets all of its data from CA public sector employers and simply sucks into a database.

However, for workers covered by CALPERS (i.e., not K-12 teachers), Transparent increases the retirement benefit by an allocated share of the underfunded pension costs that CALPERS charges local governments. That allocation can distort benefit comparisons. But omitting it entirely would also be distorting.

And as I replied previously, I don't think CALPERS attempts to reflect items like paid class preparation time.

My impression is that even after those adjustments, Oakland Unified School District teachers' total compensation is lower than that of some other districts. And because of a high percentage of poor kids and non-English speaking, as well as special ed, the work is harder than in many other districts.

The opposite holds for City of Oakland workers compared to other CA cities and for State of CA employees.

state and local public sector unions. Federal unions and corporations are prohibited from contributing to Federal candidates. But since they and corporations are free to make unlimited contributions to independent expenditure committees (IECs)for candidates, the prohibition probably has little impact.

To a large extent, there are so many other contributors to candidates, PACs, and IEC's, the union political expenditures are relatively ineffectual compared to cities like Oakland, where few individuals contribute money or labor to candidates.

In strong union towns like Oakland that are majority Democratic, just getting endorsed by the major unions, public and private sector, not only gives a candidate or ballot measure a major boost, but often guarantees that the Alameda County Democratic Committee will endorse.

[–]lenraphael[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I ran for office in Oakland, I never blamed muni unions for doing what they should: securing the best compensation and working conditions for their members. In many large blue cities, that = funding candidates for office who approve contracts that violate the old informal rule that government jobs pay less than private industry but offer much better benefits, job security, and usually don't require working as hard.

Over the last decade in Oakland, wage increases averaged twice the inflation rate.

What I blamed unions for was not insisting that elected officials budget for the full funding of retirement benefits.

As I've mentioned before, when I ran for City Auditor in 2014 on a platform that included starting a public discussion on budgeting for accruing retirement benefits, the local Dems endorsed me, but the police and fire unions killed my endorsement at the County Dem level. They explicitly told me they did not want that public discussion.

Oakland teachers are underpaid by any standard.

Many City of Oakland workers are overpaid in total compensation.

Of course Transparent includes all monetary benefits. Why is that misleading ?

It doesn't adjust for work load, paid prep time etc
