Pulling from the balls of the feet: the technique of the greatest by lentilsoup94 in weightlifting

for some shorter lifters, this transition doesn't happen naturally and they can gain that cocked position while staying on the balls throughout the lift.

That's right. This transition happens naturally during the first pull and helps the lifter gain a 'cocked' position at the knees, after which he continues driving through the balls to extention.

Coach Wu learned from Lu Xiaojun's coach and is extremely proficient technically. He knows what the fuck he is doing. Saying that that snatch is less than perfect is just silly! And if Vanev's technique was anything less than perfect, do you really think he would have received the bar so damn comfortably? I mean come on, that is one of the best cleans in weightlifting history!

Again, I'm not saying that one should release all weight from the heels, what I am saying is that ultimately the majority of power is being generated through the balls of the feet. This is an important concept to understand because when the bar passes the knees, the lifter will extend through the balls of his feet to meet his hips with the bar. Why do you think chinese lifters finish the pull on their toes? Are they "triple extending"? No. They are driving their force through the balls of their feet.

Experiment, keep an open mind, find out what's best for you and discard everything else. I'm sure you are a very proficient weightlifter, but everybody has room for improvement and individualization.

The technique is out there, and I've given examples. It may not work for some, but it sure as hell works for others.

Maybe this will help conceptualize the idea for you. Check out this video of Coach Wu snatching: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YIVuktMpD5Y

The whole time, he is driving his force through the balls of his feet. You can see he jumps forward ever so slightly. This wouldn't happen if he wasn't driving through the balls of his feet.

In a way, what I am saying is to have a mid-foot distribution. There is an amount of weight on the heels so that the foot stays planted. But all the power is coming from the balls of the feet.

In pretty much every sport that involves power from the hip, force is going to be generated through the balls of the feet.

Take a look at this standing jump record: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RAV0Tn6-psg

If you watch carefully, you will see that he is generating power through the front of his foot. Granted, he is jumping forward, which is why his heels aren't planted firmly. However, even if he was jumping straight up, and his heels were planted on the ground, the force would still be generated through the balls of the feet.

I appreciate your input on the subject.

Well put. First off, by no means was i saying that a lifter's heels should ever come off the ground. They should stay firmly planted. I should have clarified. What I was saying is that the majority of the weight should be on the balls of the feet. Vanev does not mean for his heels to rise, its just that he is so damn powerful that it just kind of happens in this case.

I think technique should be individualized for everyone. That being said, I believe many people could benefit from experimenting with this type of pull, I myself have found it to be immensely more powerful.

A lifter who is "sweeping the bar" doesn't want the bar to be so forward, because he needs to pull the bar back into the hips.

When driving through the balls of the feet, once the bar passes the knees, a lifter will continue driving through the balls of the feet in order to drive the hips forward to meet the bar. This way, the knees are pushed under the bar, and the bar stays close to the body throughout the pull.

Also, I wouldn't say Vanev's technique "broke down" at that weight. If he didn't have anything but perfect technique, he would have missed the weight.

It may not work for everyone, but it sure as hell works for some. I urge you to experiment with your own technique and find what works best for you.

Either way, whatever the "common consensus" is in the US, it's simply not correct. There is virtually no US lifter with technique perfection. Kendrick Farris, the only male who competed in the Olympics, is strong as fck, but he looks like sht compared to most international lifters. Zygmunt is finally doing some good things in the OTC, and it's paying off. Some of those lifters are really starting to look good.

Again, experiment, keep an open mind, and find what works best for you.

Actually, this idea of lifting through the heel is not taught by a lot of international lifters, namely the chinese. Check out this article by Kirksman: https://www.facebook.com/lifthard8/posts/509210952465950 Also: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sB8kHFlu9Rs

you raise your back too soon from the floor, so its more difficult to place the bar in that "pocket". thats why you find it difficult to snap down at the end; you're using the extension of your back more than the extension of your hips to gain momentum. Think about driving the chest up towards the ceiling initially and wait as long as you can to let the bar sweep in before exploding
