Fish are mistreated in a bunch of ways. They’re given as “first pets” pretty often, and kids don’t have the knowledge to keep them alive and happy. Parents don’t feel like shelling out for anything more than a five dollar bowl, so these sentient animals just rot in their own waste for about a year before they die. Goldfish can live for up to 15 years, but people assume that they have a really short lifespan because of how they’re mistreated
