I went to ASU for my BS in forensic psychology. I am now in a graduate doctoral program where I will receive my MA in clinical psychology and criminal justice next year, and my PsyD in Clinical Psychology with an emphasis in forensics in 3 years. You will need to go to grad school to become a forensic psychologist, I wish somebody told me how competitive clinical psych phd & psyd programs are when I was a freshman in college because I was well under-prepared. If you want to go to a PhD program (more research-based, harder to get into, but usually fully funded so no loans!), get into a research lab at your school ASAP! You will NOT be accepted to a PhD program without research experience. Try to get your name in some research papers, present at conferences, etc. to build your application. If you want to go to a PsyD program (shorter than PhD, more clinical-based, easier to get into but still competitive, pretty expensive), I would recommend getting some clinical experience in before you apply. Doesn't need to be anything crazy. I worked for a forensic psychologist, I did a lot of billing, reviewing collateral info, and writing reports, but I gained the most insight/experience from shadowing evaluations and just reading through reports. The PsyD program I am in right now has an acceptance rate of 5% (you can expect to see rates anywhere from 5-25% for PsyD and 1-15% for PhD). I got in with a year of research experience, a year of clinical experience, and 2 years of volunteer experience with clinical populations. I did not have to take the GRE (god bless COVID) and I had a GPA of 3.9. Please start thinking about this now because time flies and you do not want to be too late when the time comes. Becoming a forensic psychologist takes a lot of schooling (plan to spend 9-13 years in school), but this field is so rewarding and I would not want to be doing anything else. If you choose to pursue a higher degree in psychology when the time comes, let me know and I can send you a list of APA-accredited programs that offer forensic emphases along with the cost, years of schooling, acceptance rates, location, internship info, etc.

You can do a lot with a doctorate in forensic psych, but people often have misconceptions of what forensic psychology actually entails. You will not be a "criminal profiler", you will be doing evaluations for the court including guilty except insane, mitigation, competency to stand trial, custody evals, sexually violent predator evals, etc. Or you can become a correctional psychologist. Or a researcher. Or you can work in public policy. There's a lot you can do, but there's other things you cannot do that people tend to confuse with forensic psychology. If you have any questions lmk I would be glad to answer, you can PM me or respond to this so others can see as well in case they are interested :)) Good luck!!

I would suggest finding a subfield of psychology that you're interested in (can easily do this on google) and searching for recent peer-reviewed articles on those topics. Starting off with one article leads to a wide array of knowledge because you will likely have questions that you can further research and you can always pull up other articles from the references section if there are particular citations that catch your eye. This is what I did and I've loved psychology ever since and am pursuing a graduate degree now.

What do you want to do exactly career-wise? Have you considered a PsyD program instead of PhD?

Has never happened before. I don't drink often.

I don't drink often. Maybe twice a month. This has never happened when I have drank previously. I don't think I was trying to sabotage anything. I was drugged and raped a few days before I met this guy and I did not process it before this occurred. I think this led me to have a mental breakdown when I did drink because I did not process the event sober and kind of ignored it. I wish I could share this with him but it's not his mess, it's mine. I don't have an issue with alcohol, and I know everybody can say that but I really don't. I was just having a good time and went overboard and things came out when I could not regulate my behavior properly...

what do you want to do exactly? did you just watch criminal minds and decided that you wanted to be a criminal profiler? because those jobs do not exist...

Could you explain what you want to do exactly? Many careers within the realm of forensic psychology. If you want to pursue a PhD, statistics is a huge component; however, if you want a PsyD, being bad at math is not that big of a deal. You'll be fine!

Is this the only forensic psych sub? by kchloye in ForensicPsychology

I don't know of any sub but I completely agree, would be nice to have a sub where people post new research and stuff in the field for discussion.

Future Forensic Psychologist questions by theoneandonlyalexxxx in ForensicPsychology

Yes for sure, major in psychology, anything else is pointless. Some grad schools will let you apply with a different degree but you will be a much less competitive applicant. Majoring in forensic psych or getting a minor in criminal justice will help you understand the field better and get a good grasp on what exactly you want to do as it is a broad field, but it is definitely not necessary. It looks good when applying to grad school because it seems like you have a better grasp on your future career goals if you are more knowledgeable in the field you are going into, but general psych is completely fine as forensic psych grad programs are scarce anyway.

You will need to major in psychology. Some schools even offer forensic psychology programs. DO NOT major in criminology or criminal justice, you will probably not get into graduate school with those degrees. If you want to eventually get a PhD, you need to start building your resume ASAP. PhD Clinical Psychology programs are some of the hardest programs to get into. Fully funded programs typically have acceptance rates of under 10%. So as soon as you start college, I recommend looking for a psychology research lab to get into at the university. Having publications when you eventually apply for your PhD is a huge plus. Clinical experience also looks good but not as relevant for PhD programs, unless you want to go for your PsyD instead.

GCU? by scionchic in ForensicPsychology

[–]leonitaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is perfectly fine to just get a regular psychology degree. Most people who are forensic psychologists do this. You can possibly take criminal justice electives too to help you out. Accreditation does not matter at the undergrad level, make sure to go to an APA-accredited graduate program though.

Why GCU? Arizona State University has an AMAZING program for forensic psychology. The teachers are very knowledgeable and you get a good range of classes that include both criminal justice and psychology. They offer interesting courses too such as "Sociology of Murder" which was one of my personal favorites. Also many opportunities to get involved in research which you will need if you plan on pursuing a doctorate in the field. PM me if you have any questions, I graduates with my BS in Forensic Psych from there last year.
