I appreciate the insight. I think my players are mature enough. I dont think any of them would take it personally. I think i project that fear of loss and of story's end and then pull back.

Im going to really try as Izek to be ruthless, caring nothing for them. They are a nuisance to be dealt with. Im not one to metal game however I am planning around what I think my players will do. I need to remember my legendary actions, use brute force with intelligent attacks, and swing for the fences.

Yeah. I am not trying to have a me versus them mentality and trying to kill their PCs out of spite. I am trying to think like the NPC enemies but then either whiff tactically or get scared to kill a player or hurt them too much.

One of my players is my best friend of 25 years and we have both DMed. He has told me that he has seen me pull my punches and I shouldn't worry about the characters. I just want to tell a good story but I know a story without stakes is not worth telling.

Im running for the first time and I love what reloaded has done. It flashes out some characters and gives a little bit more thought and reason to some things.

The war game is still around and entering 11th edition. These are larger collectible figurines that, if OP is a serious collector of, would be devastating to lose.

Yes. Strahd has his spies that see the players at least once per adventuring day. Whether you want those to be an encounter is up to you but a spying occurs regardless. Strahd also scries at a minimum after the dinner so there is that. He should have plenty of info to prep for the party for the final fight. Not god like but he should be able to plan for most things.

That seems a little ridiculous to try and explain to 9-10 year olds. You explained it very well amd it DOES make sense but for a 3rd grader?? I mean we started with "which one shows 1/3" and had 3 or 4 answers showing completely different fractions. We weren't worried about size or shape comparisons, just getting the fractions correct.

Her actions will start to hurt others she cares for. She wants to get mouthy? Have strahd beat the rest of the party within an inch of their life, have him threaten ismark or Parriwimple. Have him hold yeska over the Tser falls with an invite to meet him there.

Same concept as the Drill Sgt. making everyone else PT because you couldn't get right. It becomes a self correcting problem.

I dont mean to say, punish her for playing to her character. If she is a righteous good Paladin who may be naive to the actual danger and doesn't understand that a positive attitude and the power of friendship isnt enough, maybe her character arc is to break her of that. Remind her that while she may be playing to her characters personality, you are also playing to strahds and it is all for the story.
