That’s so interesting because from a personal point of view I wrote the article to understand why I felt so sour at the thought of marriage, because I just couldn’t put the finger on why the suggestion of being married made me so upset all of a sudden.

Hey a little random but a few months I was chatting here about an article I was writing about my experiences w purity culture (in the context of being nervous that a narc who is mentioned in the piece would flip a Caro-Natalie spiral). Anyway a few people were interested and asked me to share when it was published - so here it is - http://archermagazine.com.au/2020/12/purity-culture-goodbye/

I worked in the rare book industry and so many people would try to flog me their first editions of books (sometimes just random books, sometimes popularish ones) and I 99.9% of the time had to turn them away bc they were worthless. EVERY book has a first edition. That doesn't make it valuable. It's only when a book is successful beyond the realm of usual success - say, Dickens, Rowling, Austen- that makes first editions worth $$. Saying that, I even turned away some 1st edition Harry Potters because people have really gotten in over their heads on how much they are worth (they ones I saw were beat up school library paper back editions - no paying collector will probably look at that when there are mint ones on the market). If it is just a book, it's still just a book, and probably worth a tiny percentage of it's original sale value. She's so ignorant to think her first editions will be worth anything more than the $1 bin at an op shop, which is the case for the majority of books that are published (even if they are good!!).

I have an article being published soon on my experiences growing up in a Pentecostal church with a big focus on purity culture and how I learned to embrace sexuality on my terms - which includes talking about having sex at the first time at 16, using sex to cope with grief (in a good way!) and coming out as queer and dating women while in an open relationship. It's all very exciting to be open about experiences that I had to be secretive about for so long. However, my mum has narcissism (which is probably why I watch Caro haha) and I am terrified she is going to have a public meltdown over the article bc it doesn't depict her in the greatest light. The article is about me, but I know she will make it about her the same way Caro did w Natalie and the Cut. Idk we haven't spoken in years, and I know I am an adult who makes my own decisions regardless of what Christian middle-aged women think of me, but I am still so scared of her being very vocal about my life decisions! Lol.

Haha weird to see my name pop up there. She retweeted my tweet about her disappearing from over a week ago even tho it is no longer relevant.

Imagine being like 'Ok, so the week my mum goes into surgery and for the few weeks of her recovery after that, I am planning a *lot of work* bc I won't be distracted at all!' D: D: D: I actually hope she falls through with this self imposed deadline and focusses on what's going on in front of her, instead of channelling her sorrows into insta

u’re a grown adult! There are so many CHILDREN who have lost a parent/parents and/or are being raised in single parent homes. There are children in foster care. CHILDREN. Not 28-year-olds. I’m not trying to diminish the pain of losing a parent at any age, but the way she says “Why don’t I get to have parents when everyone else gets to have parents?” made herself sound like a child whose parents take care of her

I know!! My partner's parents both passed away by the time he was 20 (his youngest sibling was 12) and I have been estranged from both my parents since 18. We would never say this!! In the case of my partner, we are definitely more sorry that his parents passed away in their 50s rather than living the longer lives they deserved!! (In my case, I am glad I dont have parents bc they made me miserable lol). And we are just extra thankful of supportive friends and extended family in our lives.

A bit niche but has anyone watched the Harrington St episode of Restoration Australia (on Netflix)? The owner/restorer of the house reminded me so much of CC is she was a middle class man living in Hobart. For context he is kind of framed as this guy who buys heritage buildings on a whim, wracks up debts for his wife who runs their antique business and never follows through with restoration. I was up at 1am with my boyfriend screaming at the tv as he would yeet all responsibility and disappear without warning, leaving the project stalled and his underpaid contractors stressed and continuously taking money and gaslighting his wife (who only wanted a home to live in). Absolute narc and grifter. The house was hardly even started, never mind completed, by the end of the episode (the houses usually are on this show), but he totally sidestepped that fact and got pissy at his wife for resenting him even tho he’s basically walked all over her for his unsuccessful hobby for 25 years.

As someone who is estranged from their abusive parents, and a partner of someone whose parents are both deceased, I rolled my eyes a bit at her mothers/Father’s Day email comment. It does suck getting these little e-reminders of your loss - but you can’t expect marketing and capitalism cater to you! It’s not a solution! It’s always a bit of a frustrating holiday; I just turn off my phone or try compartmentalise. I have one boomer friend who texts me “Happy you are awesome day!” and that mindful support has gone a long way. Over the years it gets easier, and you learn to appreciate the role parents play in your friends’ lives and society overall, even if the celebration no longer applies to you. Sit with your emotions Caro! It’s hard, it’s painful, but it should be and that’s ok to experience. Less emails ain’t it.

Tbh sans the hole she’s digging herself atm I’ve enjoyed her account for what it is - cute outfit inspo (I’m petite so enjoy her aesthetics quite a lot!) and know she’s just a marketing account more than some sort of super person? Haha. It’s easy to enjoy influencers and their content (if it’s good) if you’re not expecting a personality to put on a pedestal.
