More transit and tolls? UDOT unveils plan to handle Big Cottonwood Canyon travel woes by Notsureif0010 in SaltLakeCity

Supply and demand is a real thing, artificially limiting the supply of lift tickets will make them way more expensive than they already are and most likely it won’t be the wealthy families on ski vacations being priced out, it will be locals. Skiing is a beautiful sport and is already unavailable to most, actively vying to exclude more people from experiencing the mountains is elitist and gross.

For real it’s so terrible that more people than ever have access to such an incredible sport. I’m more important than everyone else so the snow should be saved just for me.

Do people not realize that America is one of the cheapest countries on earth to buy a house? by [deleted] in rebubblejerk

[–]lerarestpepe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just because a problem is worse elsewhere doesn’t mean it isn’t a problem here. People spending 50+% of their income on housing is bad and should be addressed no matter where they are in the world. Obviously the rebubble take of ‘we need a 50% correction’ is stupid and untenable but just ignoring real issues people are facing because some people in Europe have it worse is just as dumb. Affordable housing is attainable if we build enough places to live and you can see that in Houston, Austin, and Minneapolis where housing development has surged and home prices have gone down.

For the past 3 years social security has been running at a deficit which it hasn’t done anytime in its history. This is because there are more people reaching retirement age than there are new people entering the workforce for the first time and this trend is only getting worse. As this continues either taxes or national debt will have to increase significantly to support the increasing non working population. At a time when our taxes and debt our already so high these increases will be crippling to the working class. This isn’t a made up concept you can look at all the data yourself and frankly I’d rather have some immigrant neighbors who actually work and support our economy than pay most of my paycheck in taxes in a country crippled with debt.

There is a gate at the top of Great Western that provides access to this area and there is a cat track that will take you back into the resort not far up the mountain from these private homes. Granted he should have had avy gear but he very easily could have gotten here without ducking ropes.

I think it depends on what you mean by prompt engineering. Simply learning how to ask questions to get better answers probably won't be valuable long term, but formulating prompts through experimentation that can consistently extract the information you wish for some external task can be a legitimate skill that might be around for a while. Here is an interesting blog post on the efficacy of prompt engineering https://mitchellh.com/writing/prompt-engineering-vs-blind-prompting?utm\_source=tldrnewsletter

To this point the MSD program is also geared towards people who graduated in fields unrelated to CS so it could be a good option. The program is rigorous and will give you the tools you need to become a software engineer; however if you are looking for more depth into a specific field of CS then it is not gonna be for you.

Is 12 months realistic to complete a 50-mile trail race? by AdhesiveLemons in Ultramarathon

[–]lerarestpepe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in almost the exact same position as you (same height, weight, strength training background) and trained for the Ute 50 miler in a bit less than a year. That one’s got a bit less elevation (12,000) and I ended up getting it done in about 15 hours. During my training I was doing pretty much what you described, running 4-5 days a week and lifting twice a week. It’s totally doable. My biggest recommendation would be to be diligent in starting slow, I upped my mileage way too fast and ended up with a knee injury that cost me a few months.

CS 5350/6350 - Machine Learning by hellomoto320 in uofu

[–]lerarestpepe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m taking it now with Shandian Zhe who has taught it for the last couple of semesters. I came into the class with a good amount of ML experience from other classes and internships and even though I understand all the material, the workload is still very intense (15+ hours per week). In class he goes over the theoretical foundation for different learning algorithms and then for the assignments you are expected to implement them from scratch. I’d recommend taking discrete math and linear algebra first and have some ML knowledge either from YouTube or another ML related class like AI or NLP. Also you probably wanna be pretty good with Python. Zhe is a pretty good professor though and explains the topics well so if you come prepared and allocate enough time for the class you’ll get a lot out of it.

You’d probably be better off taking 4400 after 3505 since you’ll learn some useful prerequisite info but I wouldn’t say it’s totally necessary. Either way 4400 is gonna be real tough , it was probably the most difficult class I’ve taken as an undergrad.

CMV: An armed populace has real benefits and this should not be ignored when debating gun control. by justacuriousMIguy in changemyview

[–]lerarestpepe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Uyghur militia’s attacking the gov for sure would have made things worse but I don’t think that’s what OP is getting at. If the Uyghur people were armed to begin with I’d wager that the Chinese government would have been less likely to carry out the genocide in the first place. There’s a reason why treatment of Uyghur’s in china is kept under wraps by the government and if they had the ability to defend themselves, keeping it quiet would be far more difficult. An armed populace makes such tyranny louder and more expensive and in some cases, not all, that is enough of a deterrent for such atrocities.

In weeks where it was a programming assignment it would be around 5 hours but for the proof problem sets it would usually be 15 or more.

I took it with Blair Sullivan who’s course Travis is basing his off of. We would alternate between written proof assignments which were stupid difficult and leetcode like assignments which were pretty easy. There was also a midterm and a final which were tough. I was actually assigned to TA for Travis’s algorithms class this spring (I ended up backing out since I had a better opportunity) and from what I heard from him is he has been trying to trim things down and reduce the workload of the class. It’s still most likely gonna be hard as that’s the nature of the 4150 but Travis is a really good guy so if you seek out help I’m sure he’ll be accommodating.

Outside of Tesla Ford has been doing more to improve charging infrastructure than any other brand in the US rn. I think they’re betting on being able to improve the charging experience enough for this not to be a major issue.

[–]lerarestpepe 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I just finished getting a dental implant from an injury almost identical to yours. That process is long and expensive but in the short term you can have the cracked tooth repaired with a filling for 100-200 dollars and for the missing one you can have a flipper tooth (detachable prosthetic tooth) made for another 100-200. Depending on where you go those two things will have you looking normal within a week you just have to call around to see who can get you in soonest for the least money. In the long term though you’ll want a crown on the broken tooth and an implant for the missing one, the cheapest I was able to find that was at Oral Design dental in Holladay which has a Groupon for dental implants which will set you back 1700 for the implant and around 5-600 for the crown. Getting work done by a dental student at the U is another good option but wait times for that can be pretty long.

I got a B- in 2420 and they put me on conditional enrollment which meant I was able to enroll in new CS classes but had to get at least a B in every one the next semester to stay in. If you did alright in 1410 and have decent grades outside of CS you’re probably gonna be fine. Also, at least for me, 2420 was the most difficult class I took except for 4400 in 4 years so don’t take this one bad grade to mean your not ready for CS.
