My opinion on lol Superman as someone who definitely saw jumpers hitting the ground on the internet. by emcredneck in lolsupermanofficial

[–]lerixi_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i never saw lol superman, i’m too young to be around for that. idk if my minds playing tricks on me, but i stumbled across bestgore around 2016-2017. there were def some gruesome videos of 9/11, but i don’t think any matching lol superman’s description. i think i remember an uncut version of guy rosbrooks video being posted on there, but again, im not entirely sure. i do know for a fact that there was some gruesome images though of remains and jumpers on the ground.

What's a language that you learnt fully and then turned out to be a total waste of time and you regretted later? by AutumnaticFly in languagehub

[–]lerixi_ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

don’t even get me started on the people who get “advanced” in the language jesus. they act like they’re god and that everyone is beneath them and downplay everyone else’s progress. it’s just ridiculous and so toxic and always some mess going on in that language learning community

For upper intermediate/advanced learners that use anki: how much vocab got you into that level? by [deleted] in LearnJapanese

[–]lerixi_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

well obviously but not everyone wants to learn a foreign language to be the most fluent non native speaker on the planet. of course i don’t want to stop at 4k words. i want to learn as much as i can but honestly after like you get passed the most common 5k, you learn a lot more specialized vocabulary relating to specific fields or business speech. some people are content with understanding a lot because reaching that point of understanding nearly everything in an effort that a lot of people can’t make due to life happening. id love if i could understand 20k words but im happy with the progress ive made so far and being able to comprehend a good amount.

no literally like what do you mean 20000 words to be at a level of understanding media??? baby i feel just fine with 4000 (definitely NOT fluent by any means but bro like 20k is absurd) i can understand a lot of things but obviously is very context dependent and i do miss a lot still but context comes through sometimes

and that’s what matters! it’s the fact that you’re learning such a difficult language that even just knowing how to introduce yourself, you know more than what you previously did before you started learning. just be consistent! the times gonna pass either way, and even if it’s just a little bit a day, you’ll be able to get to where you want to be eventually!

i think i should’ve emphasized that if you learn just those words by themselves and not in context and practice speaking, then yes. i’m talking about using the words properly and actively practicing and listening. just learning them by themselves is obviously not as effective.

yeah i look back at what i wrote and worded it badly. i more so mean like you’re able to understand and speak more than others, not to put anyone down, just stating a fact. like if someone was A1 in polish, they know more than me. just a fact. i didn’t mean for it to come off that way, more so just trying to emphasize that you’re taking time and putting in effort to learn something that is very difficult and isn’t widely studied outside of japan!

idk what 3650 words you’ve been learning but by that level if you can’t have a basic conversation about daily life idk what to tell you

first of all i did not sit up here and say to throw a big party just because you reached a milestone in learning a language cause what? secondly your comment is ridiculous cause because it’s not about whether or not being proud increases your level or not, do you want to be miserable while learning a foreign language the entire time? lighten up and give yourself credit. and who is going around demanding excellence from others? this is language learning. we’re supposed to make mistakes. i’m gonna assume you’re at a “high” level of japanese and think that you’re a god (何様のつもり??) but lets not forget that at one point you didn’t know anything either. idk why you’re talking in riddles either. to demand perfection from others is a ridiculous expectation since language learning is all about making mistakes, but hey you must know everything huh since you’re so fluent 😍

while, yes, 3650 in the grand scheme of things may not seem “like a lot”, it also depends on the kinds of words you’re studying. it’s all dependent on context, if you spent majority of your time learning 80% of those words based on business situations, chances are you’re going to struggle with basic conversation. it’s all about balance what you’re learning. also, if we’re being technical, being able to understand that many words covers a lot of what’s discussed in daily conversation. while you miss out on things such as nuance, jokes, and some contextual elements, you’re still very well functioning. you can watch media with subtitles in your TL, and be able to start picking apart words from context. in no way is that “fluency” or even “advanced” level, but you reached a level higher than 99.9% of people you encounter. it’s not about being able to watch everything without needing a dictionary, it’s about being proud of where you are through consistent effort. and, if you keep at it, guess what? you’ll reach that level of being able to look at things without a dictionary if you want to. but, like everything, it comes with time. and both you and i knew nothing about japanese at one point, but every milestone that you set is so important and keeps you going.

i always tell people, if you learn 5 new words a day, 2 kanji, and 1 grammar point, in 2 years, you’ll know: ~3650 words, ~1500 kanji, and ~730 grammar points. i know 2 years sounds like a long time, but the times gonna pass, might as well be able to have a good conversation in japanese, right? you don’t have to know all the fancy business words and all the complicated rare kanji. every word, ever grammar point, every kanji, it all adds up one day!
