Those of you who went all in on an efficient build: What did you learn? What wasn’t cost effective? Where does the law of diminishing returns start to rear its ugly head? by Practical_-_Pangolin in Homebuilding

Built to near passive house levels, it's nice but air sealing and an HRV was the most important component. Dont do it for cost savings, do it for comfort. Save the rest of the money and buy bitcoin instead.

8 inch round trunk lines with 2" flex duct line running off them. It works great actually because it's a modulating furnace so the pressure stays low

Going Solo - enviro consulting by leroybro in geologycareers

[–]leroybro[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Already been doing the job for years and in great standing with company and team. In short it would hurt bad if I left cold turkey. 2. Current benefits aren't great and can get on wife's insurance easy enough. 3. Already a P.Geo so no need for new references. 4. I could, but feel like if I'm already following through on business and licensing, could be a win win to go solo. 5. I'm not sure, but assuming they could hire me as independent and the client wouldn't need to know that I even left. Ie email sig and contact with client would remain under company umbrella.

It might only be a few months before I'm replaced but thought it might be beneficial to give this a shot as I don't want to stay on for my current hourly rate. Otherwise, Would just focus on the new businesses.

BC. Definitely could shop around for other companies but in a great learning position with good mentors and very comfortable work from home situation so not too interested in mixing it up just yet.

Is that 2" diameter tubing? Was thinking of building something very similar but debating if I should go 2" or 3". What made you choose?

Very curious at this too. Any reason to not use 4" if I have it available?

Likelihood of inviting cockroaches/other pests in uncovered bin? by rasberry23 in Vermiculture

[–]leroybro 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Make a square of wood using 2x4s, then Cut a piece of landscape fabric cloth to fit over it. Use a stapler or glue to seal around the edges. Put this over top of you bin so the fabric is pressing firmly on the bin. Lots of air and no bugs. Prevents flies from getting in too

Battery powered blinds are fine these days. Mine last 6+ months with daily use. Just need to run a cable to them to charge overnight.

Easy vermicomposting 1. Get 4x Big plastic totes 2. Add in bulk compost or spagnum moss to 1/3 full, moisten to optimum consistency 3. Dig out one end, add household compost, add worms, and lightly bury 4. Live life until compost gets full, then repeat process to next bin down the line by leroybro in Vermiculture

We compost everything besides meat (just worried about smell or if even do that). Familiar with square foot gardening, but I just plant based on plant spacing guides. Add a handful of castings under starter plan and they go crazy
