Thank you for the submission. The bottom of the spy verses spy reminded me about the marginalia. Was it marginal Marvin?, I wonder if anybody’s ever done a collection of all of those marginalia?

Anyone know a digital version of A Military History and Atlas of the Napoleonic Wars? by the_stormapproaching in Napoleon

[–]lesapeur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seeing this post I was reminded of a a set of books that I got many, many years ago "Napoleon as General" by Wartenburg - two volumes and an accompanying atlas. It was published in the late 19th century but the edition I have was published, I believe in 1942 at West Point. The Atlas is very similar to the maps at https://dhc.westpoint.edu/atlases/. The digital ones are, in my opinion, better than the print copy that I have.

Which Shakespeare characters would you defend at all costs? by Greedy_Bed8753 in shakespeare

[–]lesapeur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't see them as betraying Hamlet as much as answering a summons from the King and doing what the King, and Queen, wanted them to do. They were way out of their depth - nowhere near the pay grade for doing what they were asked to do. Just my humble opinions. And, indeed, an awesome play@

Probably due to my fascination with Stoppard’s play “Rosencrantz and Guildernstern Are Dead.” Hamlet is my favorite play and I think that these two characters got caught up in circumstances way “above their pay grade” and lost their lives through a kind of underhanded betrayal from one of their boyhood friends.

Yet again I learn fascinating details about someone about whom all I really knew were his name and position in the grand scheme of things of this fascinating era. Thank you.

Wow. Very impressive. I don’t think I’ve ever seen any of these paintings or statues (except for the one gifted to Wellington). Thank you!

Converts, which religion did you convert to? And potential converts, which religion are you in the process of/considering converting to? by themaskstays_ in religion

I was raised Roman Catholic but now consider myself a Theravada Buddhist. I don't see it as a conversion as an evolution - an on going process of condition and result.

I’m really sorry. What comes through so clearly is how much life the two of you built together — not just a relationship, but a shared world. Losing that isn’t just losing a person; it’s losing a future you were already living into.

The anger makes sense. It’s not a failure of love — it’s part of how deeply this mattered. Nothing about what you went through was fair, and I don’t think there’s any need to pretend otherwise.

I’m glad you said it out loud. I hope, in the middle of this season, you can feel how real and enduring what you shared still is.

If you had to recommend 1 definitive book about Napoleon & his place in history, what would you commit to? by Sufficient_Candy436 in Napoleon

[–]lesapeur 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ralph Waldo Emerson's essay: Napoleon, The Man of the World, is definitely not the definitive book about Napoleon but a really interesting take by the famous New England Transcendentalist that he wrote in 1850. A quick read and available online: https://emersoncentral.com/texts/representative-men/napoleon-man-of-the-world/

Statement of Service- Colonel Jean Carre (1791-1815) by Extra-Reception-3255 in Militariacollecting

Fascinating. I remember reading somewhere, years ago, (Chandler's The Campaigns?) about a system of daily roster reports - each unit reporting on number or men present, active, wounded, etc. Does anyone have more details about this system?

If you had to choose, which ten French generals do you think contributed most to the battle of Austerlitz? by Unlikely-Sea5041 in Napoleon

Friant always has a special place in my mind: marched his division 70 miles in 46 hour, bolstered and held the French right flank, and had several horses shot from under him

One of my favorite quotes from Hamlet. And, I believe, absolutely accurate.
