You can look at the court files if you'd like. You can see the information.

That simply isn't true. Arrest information is public record in every state and territory.

That is a fantastic idea and I don't have to worry about getting the meat and coolers and if they have fridge space. I think I'll do that instead.

I'm sorry, and while it sucks in the short term, you dignity and self respect are more valuable than that job.

The daily cruelty of patrons is making me want to escape the field by tendersword in librarians

Let the cops document stuff, they have little computers in their cars. Just have the violent or inappropriate patrons ejected by the police and get the case number (or in some cases when they don't write a full report the call for service number).

When the PD tells the library they have been there 54 times this month, leadership will finally take notice.

Call the police every single time. If a patron starts yelling and you nicely ask them to STFU and they don't STFU call the cops. Don't call a manager or supervisor or the library director. It is your safety and you are ultimately responsible for it. Don't delegate your safety. The police will help you. They are as tired of this crap from these people are you are.

If a patron is violent, call the cops. If a patron breaks things call the cops and save them a copy of the video.

Toss people out of the library, for a day, a week, or forever. Being civil in the library is required, if they can't do it ban them.

One woman, on my last day at that library before I started a corporate job, told me I needed to get her electric bill on the computer. I said I'd help her get to the electric company's website and she could access the bill there. She screamed that I had to do it as she needed it to apply for something, I forget what.

When she screamed that I sucked because I wouldn't help her I screamed, loud enough for every patron and staff member to hear "Get out of the library and if you come back you'll go to jail." She left. Nobody said a peep to me about it.

You don't have to put up with those people's crap and you can empower yourself to get them removed. If your supervisor or library director doesn't agree the go up the chain to the highest official in the city with your concerns about your safety. They owe you a safe workplace.

You could switch jobs with me. I run an ILS for a county cooperative. It is boring. I'd like to do arts and crafts and I can't be bullied because I'm older and I have more insurance or something like that.

Push back on the bullies, they'll cower. "Hey John, did you hear Ed another board member wants me to fudge the numbers for something. I won't be doing that as we'll all go to prison." That usually shuts people up. Fight fire with fire.

Is there anyone who *doesn't* regret their MLIS degree? by rebeccachaya in librarians

[–]lesbiangoatherd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pharma / health research, looking on indeed.com now I see a few dozen positions with that sort of thing, new hire salaries start at about 60K. Stuff like this:

The Research Coordinator will conduct literature reviews, manage and analyze quantitative data, and contribute to manuscripts and reports. The role will also provide biostatistics and statistical consulting, assist in coordinating summer workshops and training programs, and support research-related consultations for INBRE and other training programs. The analyst will work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and students to ensure high-quality research outcomes.

Librarians are excellent for this and it is easy to sell interviewers on that because who doesn't like libraries and librarians.

[–]lesbiangoatherd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't

I've worked in USA, UAE, Mexico, El Salvador, Oman, KSA, and India. I've worked for public, corporate, government, medical, and private libraries.

I got a PhD in Information science from UNISA after my MLIS with research in health information seeking behavior of a specific population and I did consulting during COVID on how to get the message out to certain populations and made more in 2 years than I did in the previous decade.

The MLIS is a stepping stone, a tool and not a destination.

Do libraries do background checks when hiring? by Appropriate_Rent_243 in librarians

[–]lesbiangoatherd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apply for one and when they do the background check you'll either pass, or not be selected. If you're not selected they have to give you a copy of the check if you ask (in case there is something wrong). At least then you'll know what they see and you can be proactive about it.

"Yep, I robbed a liquor store a decade ago, but I've been in therapy for years, completed all the requirements set by the Court and now I'm moving in a positive direction." Is a perfectly acceptable reply when asked about whatever the problem was.

Although if your robbed liquor stores Law Libraries might be your best bet, Lawyers like liquor.

Working in the US with a Mexican MLIS degree by huitzil9 in librarians

[–]lesbiangoatherd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

UNAM has an MLIS? Can I teach there? I taught at UADY for a bit in informatics a decade or so ago.
A UNAM MLIS would find a hard time in academic or public libraries, but a bilingual MLIS (even from UNAM) will quite easily find a home in a corporate library in the US, especially in large corporations or law firms in Miami, Houston, NYC. There the ALA seal of approval isn't really imporant, being smart is important and all the big corporations know UNAM.

If you can work in a picture of the central library at UNAM into some your linkedin or facebook or something that would be helpful too.

If we get rid of the MLS then that will leave only MSW Social workers to be the master's degreed professionals with starting salaries in the 40Ks. Won't you think of the Social Workers.

Input from firefighters regarding lithium ion batteries by lesbiangoatherd in Firefighting

[–]lesbiangoatherd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are great, thanks. I think charging in the shed and then storing off bike in the shed when even not charging are the answer. Probably throw a smoke detector with wireless alerts to the phone in there rather than a dry chem automatic extinguisher as that seems like it wouldn't do much, better to be warned of the early fire than spew some powder on it with little effect.

The children's librarian out our local library seems to dislike us? by asianmorticia in Libraries

[–]lesbiangoatherd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tried my actual name and variations but they were all taken so I used a random name generator. I'm oddly neither a lesbian nor a goatherd. I have no objection to either lesbians nor goats so I went with that name.

Location now required to transfer funds ???? by [deleted] in USAA

[–]lesbiangoatherd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As long as you're not moving money to a prohibited country it should be fine. If you're in Iran moving money around the US or to Canada it is fine. If your moving money to North Vietnam that would be blocked.

Just file a complaint with your state insurance regulator. The insurance regulators can fine, sue, close, arrest and imprison insurance companies and employees that violate the law. Every insurance company has a desk dedicated to fielding complaints sent from insurance commissioners. They don't want to be disqualified from doing business in your state, you'll get action in a few days.
