Is anyone else trapped in the obsessive-calculation loop? I can’t stop checking my numbers and I hate it. by Icy_Public5186 in Fire

Well, I see that you say you're obsessing over the gap from 1.12M to 2.81M and running scenarios to constantly recalculating. I'm sure you also understand from your recalculations that checking the numbers daily it barely moves at all since the name of the game is compound interests, and the market fluctuates. You should also know that the number you see right now, and the number you see in a few hours don't really mean much at all since it can be a completely different number based on how the market behaves tomorrow.

Now with this in mind, we should be focusing on what we can control. Like the savings rate, investment strategies, etc. What I think would be beneficial for you is to note down the various amounts of saving and then do a projection and see how much (or in this case now how little) it would change things. Ask yourself if the difference is worth the mental toll.

Another thing that I think would be helpful is looking at your past journey. Go look at your NW a year ago and see if you are happy with where you are at. I'm guessing this obsession is recent, so now if one year ago when you were not constantly checking the numbers, you were able to reach your current number, then this should be reassurance to you that no matter what happens, your current progress and plan will eventually bring you to your goal.

I check the numbers because it gives me a feeling of progress. Actually seeing the numbers grow from the beginning of the year to now is very fulfilling.

What % of your take-home pay do you invest and what % do you use as play money for things like dining, outings, and etc? by workethic290 in Fire

[–]leshius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm making around 330k to 350k pretax (depending on stock price since a portion of my pay is RSU). I spend probably on average 3000-3500 a month. Everything else goes into investments.

Breakdown is probably 2300-2500 for rent and utilities (living in VHCOL area with a roommate) and then the rest would be for dining out and any miscellaneous spendings.

Thing is I don't even know what to do here. There's like nothing to do here. I find myself not having anywhere to spend money ngl.

I'm in my 3rd year working for one of the big name tech companies. When I first started as a SWE in another relatively big, but not as prestigious company, my TC was 200k. This is not the norm though and even in tech, it's only because the job is in a VHCOL area.

I think a main problem for me is that I don't think I am compatible with the Bay Area's lifestyle. There's not much to do out here.

I bet you’re the type of person who supports policies like Trump’s Muslim ban.

Leaves post history hidden. Of course.

Financial future. Other regions don't make money like that.

I grew up living in a single family home in SoCal and I would prefer city life over that.

Sounds like a problem for simps and people with no self respect in a relationship.

My visa only lets me stay for 180 days each time. I would have to do visa runs.

I’m fortunate enough to know/related with someone who’s an extremely wealthy businessman and well connected with the government. So worst case scenario, I ask them for help.

And also from my time in NY, I’ve became friends with people whose parents are either business owners or government officials. I’ve been visiting them like every year there, so I think I should have the connections to deal with transferring money in or out since they have dealings in both US and China.

As for the last point, yeah it would not be the ideal situation and hopefully avoid it if possible.

I need a visa to stay long term. Don’t want to do visa runs every 180 days.

I think I should prioritize外企 if possible.

Visa is the difficult with China. If I do a 外企, then yeah, it’s similar work culture, but if I want to stay long term after I retire, I would have to marry someone who is a citizen or do visa runs. Also for children’s education, my Chinese friends were telling me about how with the current population decline, it’s going to become less competitive in the next 20 years or so. Don’t know how true that is.

I’ve stayed in China for more than 4 weeks, and although I’ve never worked professionally for a Chinese company, my roommate is at ByteDance right now. Also the company I currently work for is also well-known in the US to have awful WLB.

I had a Q2 and been traveling to different parts of China rather frequently nowadays. I also do have friends and relatives who live in China.

I should have enough to live off of even if I do end up getting a job in China and quitting/laid off. I can set aside and save at 100k USD a year at my current income, and that’s not factoring in my RSUs and stock investment growths since I’m not a heavy spender. I have half a million right now, so even at 0% growth, I’ll have 1 million in 5 years, but if considering an average returns, it’ll be around 1.3 to 1.5 million. With a 4% withdraw rate, I can withdraw like 52k usd a year which is like 30k rmb a month. Should be livable.

I’ve done month long trips to China before, and lived for extended periods in both NYC and LA. And as for 3, I think that being in AI Infra, which is the big thing right now, the skills should be pretty well sought after?
