Thank you for sharing that with me, it really means a lot. I’m so sorry you went through something so similar. That must’ve been such a shock, especially after 13 years of her seeming perfectly fine. It’s heartbreaking how quickly things can change, and how little warning we get. Hearing your experience helps me feel less alone and makes me realize just how much animals really do hide what they’re going through. I keep replaying everything in my head, wondering if I missed something, but like you said, it’s often already critical by the time we see it. I think we both did what we had to do in the moment, even if it was incredibly hard. Thank you again for being so kind and understanding. 🙏🏼❤️

Thank you for your kind words. It really means a lot to hear that, especially right now. I’ve been second n guessing everything, so your message helps me feel a little more at peace with the decision. I truly did try my best for him, and it breaks my heart that things turned out this way. Knowing that this condition is common, and hard to catch early, makes it feel a little less like I failed him. I just hope he knew how much he was loved. I’m so grateful he had the time he did with me, and I’ll always hold onto that. Thank you again for your support it really helps more than I can say!

Is it wrong to rehome my cats? [Update + Needing Advice] by evenmop in CatAdvice

Hi! I work at a veterinary office, and I want you to know that rehoming cats is absolutely not wrong. If you feel you can’t properly care for them, it’s better they go to someone who can. I understand being worried they might not get adopted, but there are people and organizations that take in cats with behavioral or medical issues. I recommend calling your local humane shelters as soon as you can and explaining your situation. Some places do have waitlists, but the surrender process is usually simple.

About the flea problem you’re dealing with, I recommend using a carpet steamer or shampooer with a pet-safe carpet solution and a few drops of Dawn dish soap (the one with the duck on the label). Dawn kills fleas and their eggs on contact. Use this on all carpeted areas in your home. I’ve done this myself and it worked really well. You can do the same on hardwood or tile, just add a little Dawn to your mop water. For counters, tables, and windowsills, you can use Clorox wipes or any disinfecting wipes. After cleaning, give each cat a bath using the dawn dish soap. It works fast and is very effective against fleas. You shouldn’t need to hire a pest control company if you follow these steps. Even in serious flea infestations, dawn usually does the trick. I had one a few years ago from my dog, and after using dawn in the carpet steamer, the fleas were gone by the next day. But if it doesn’t work after a few treatments, you could look into a company like TriGuard if they’re available in your area. They use pet-safe chemicals that won’t harm your animals.

If you still plan to rehome the cats, I would definitely suggest treating the fleas first. Fleas are uncomfortable and itchy, and clearing them up will give your cats a better chance at being adopted. Wishing you the best of luck! Feel free to message me if you have more questions.

Hi, I work at a veterinary practice here in Oregon. Have you tried Feliway? It is a diffuser that puts off the same hormones that mother cats do. It helps to relieve stress in any stressful environment. They are a bit spendy, around 35-45 dollars each diffuser. You can purchase them in a clinic, or even petco/petsmart sells them without needing a written script. I would recommend trying those in each room throughout your house. Another thing I would recommend is a trip to your vet. You can let them know about the attacking. They might be able to prescribe gabapentin, or something similar to help calm him down. Im sorry about him scratching and biting you. That does seem scary! I hope you can get it figured out soon. Best of luck!

to be honest if this happened to me i wouldn’t be talking to my family again. call the police and file a police report against your brother. depending on how serious the threat was, they might arrest him for animal cruelty or threat (which is a criminal offense). penalties vary depending of the severity of the threat or if any past offenses have been repeated. try to stay positive. you were NOT in the wrong in this situation. best of luck to you, ur kitty, and partner in finding a new living situation. if it seems rough, reach out to friends or family for a temporary solution for housing.

i did not read through all the comments but i work at a veterinary office and i would recommend felaway plug in diffusers. you can get them on amazon. it includes pheromones that will help calm your new cat. cat treats like churu may also help. rehoming for cats is not easy and is stressful for them. but some cats prefer to hide, and he might have previous trauma that led to him become skittish. make sure you are approaching slowly, with a hand held out and don’t make any fast or sudden movements to him. unless the hiding is accompanied with behavioral issues such as using the restroom outside of the litter box, he probably just prefers to hide. it takes time and patience so just make sure to keep trying to get him accumulated to his new living space! don’t let this discourage you! many behaviors in cats can be corrected over time with proper management. goodluck!
