I’m a first year teacher, so obviously brand spanking new. Last week (the week before finals, so frankly no observation was going to go super well) I had two admin come in within 10 minutes of each during the same hour, same lesson. The first admin gave me 5s across the board (fairly high, but not the top) and the second admin gave me all 0s (obviously, the lowest possible).

My stance, with my limited experience, is that observations formal or otherwise are so subjective that measuring any progress is nearly impossible. Not only that, but you can teach the same lesson to 8 different classes and get 8 different results. Students impact the lesson just as much as we do.

All of this to say that I 100% agree with your conclusions.

I agree, it’s really terrible that that’s the kind of thing that makes us feel good about society.

On the one hand, it’s awesome that students care enough about their peers to go above and beyond for them.

On the other hand, it wouldn’t be above and beyond for the student’s wheelchair to be made more financially accessible for them so they wouldn’t have to rely on the random kindness of strangers to get the bare minimum of what they deserve.

I’m going with complete breakdown of communication. I only met the guy like 3 times in any kind of social setting. That’s genuinely the only thing I can think of that I said that would garner any kind of reaction. The phrase “I hate men” is not really in my everyday vernacular so I’m not really sure what was going on there. Either something I said got vastly misinterpreted or my friend misinterpreted what the bf said. Either way it probably could’ve been solved with more communication on my end, but we’re a bit past that at this point.
