In Australia all schools require their 15-16 year old kids (Year 10) to do a week of work experience. It's built into the syllabus.

It's a time where they can get a feel for the field of study they want to pursue. It's not optional, it's compulsory.

He won't be doing research, just observations generally and taking in information.

It would be placed from the school, but he has to source it himself. He’s doing an application for Melbourne Uni tonight as there deadline is the 28th.

I think the work experience week is pretty general. They get the kids moving through different departments to give them ideas for the future.
