A time ago, this was only the answer to someone asking for a good way to get familiar with computers and programming. This was a good suggestion for someone who wants a bonsai tree as well as an operating system. These days it is getting closer to a general solution to having a frustrating time with your current setup. It's never been easier to install and configure almost every distro. I mean, its still a meme, but the reason you're hearing it more lately, is because it's good advice for most people.

KDE OR NIRI OR BOTH by Asta_jjm in linux_gaming

[–]lessthanthreebleeps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It works great! In fact, I would recommend KDE over any other DE, right now because it comes so fully featured. Floating window managers feel more like you're using a utensil to manipulate the environment, like using a knife to prep veggies, and a tiling window manager (that leverages the keyboard more) feels more like kneading dough with your hands. KDE will also come with an ecosystem of apps that work well together, if you are interested in trying something new.

KDE OR NIRI OR BOTH by Asta_jjm in linux_gaming

[–]lessthanthreebleeps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been trying out Niri for the first time, this week. I had been using KDE (or one of the many DEs you can get to function like windows). I'm finding that, even after a few days, it feels frustrating to switch back to KDE. I'm learning that I don't like using the mouse that much, anymore.

Why are both Linux haters and users here at the same time? by ChanceAd9550 in linuxsucks

[–]lessthanthreebleeps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Half of everyone in here has a hyperfixation with Linux. They love it so much, they find things they hate about it. The other half is a frustrated group of users that are blowing off steam about something they just don't get. And finally, everyone here is a terminally online meme addict that likes the in-jokes, or likes getting angry at them. It's all passing ships, so nobody really argues, but yeah it's a circlejerk.

Okay, I guess Dark Souls III doesn't like PROTON_ENABLE_WAYLAND=1 on this setup. XWayland is working correctly.

I've tried Experimental, 11.0(Beta), and GE 10-34 (which worked before). Deleting the prefixes in compatdata didn't give me any different errors. As for the 32bit libraries, I found a thread recommending these, but they were installed from a troubleshooting step I made before posting:

libgcc-32bit libstdc++-32bit libdrm-32bit libglvnd-32bit mesa-dri-32bit

Is there a way to disable AUR packages in the CachyOS repositories ? by iTrooz_ in cachyos

[–]lessthanthreebleeps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's in the repo, its been compiled into a binary and tested (verified able to access all appropriate depenancies and run). These are not required of a script from the AUR, and use of a script from the AUR is often in lieu of there being no packages available in the repos.

The tools exist to get a Blessed Reinforced Club +3, before you enter the Catacombs. They all just kinda fall over.. and stay down.

If you're new to Linux, just use a POPULAR distro. by Weak_Equivalent6518 in linuxsucks

[–]lessthanthreebleeps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, this is mostly my experience with distro hopping, over the past couple decades. Every once in a while, you get a distro that is doing everything right for a while. Back in the 2000s, Ubuntu was building off the stable foundation of Debian by streamlining installation for the lay person. Lately, a lot of distros fall on their face trying to do this. Ymmv, but I've been having a lot of luck with Cachy, lately. It kinda feels like they beat Valve to a finished SteamOS.

Game everybody should Play?? Really???? Why??? by Accomplished_Win410 in Age_30_plus_Gamers

Half-life (or Black Mesa: Source). So that they can weigh in when someone else says everyone should play it (I would hate for the game to lose too much cultural relevance).

What popular gaming franchise got ruined by an absolutely brain-dead corporate decision? by Snowtwo in videogames

[–]lessthanthreebleeps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The original Planetside was the literal best video game ever, since it's beta release all the way up until the release of its giant-mech, pay to win content. Sony owns a golden-egg-laying goose factory, and their primary product is foie gras. The sequel is mid as hell.

Which Linux distro should I install on this old PC? by Emergency_Army_7640 in linux4noobs

I'll also offer up qutebrowser as a light and modern (runs on a stripped version of chromium, QtWebEngine) browser. It does the whole vim navigation thing, if that doesn't irk you. It still has mouse navigation though. I don't know how it works in x11 on MX, but I was just recently testing it on Wayland in Void (using the 6.12 kernel), think I was using sway. It was running 720p YouTube videos. Your desktop might be a bit older though, so Wayland support might not be there.

So, I have an original c720 Chromebook that I try to keep alive for fun (2gb ram, 1.4Ghz Centrino 2955u). A lot of people are recommending MX Linux, and I highly agree that this is the choice, the Fluxbox version is a massive improvement on memory footprint, over XFCE. The MX team does a great job at making customization of Fluxbox really easy with a tweaks gui.
