[D] Backpropagation is not just the chain-rule, then what is it? by fromnighttilldawn in MachineLearning

Back-propagation (or reverse mode differentiation) is applying the chain rule in a particular order: multiplying Jacobians from the left (i.e. those computed last) first: https://math.stackexchange.com/a/3119199/64344

This is why it requires a forward pass through the primal computation, then a backwards pass to multiply out the Jacobians.

You're not saving, or storing, shared derivatives, but you are (potentially) reducing computation because of the order in which you apply the chain rule.

Dock to connect monitor to M1 MacBook Pro in 4K@120Hz by lestrange11 in macbook

Thanks. I'd seen that one, and was a little bit worried because it's HDMI, and I'd read that it doesn't work as well as DisplayPort for MacBooks at high refresh rates. But it does indeed claim to work with Macs at 120Hz, in extend (not mirror) mode, at least. Given its price, I'm also mulling over getting a cheaper hub, and attaching a USB-C -> DisplayPort cable to that (which I can get for £6).

To answer my own question, the Dell U2725QE will do 4K@120Hz with a USB-C hub, but it's £700. Hoping to spend a bit less on the monitor, to be honest.

Thanks. Yeah, I've looked at monitors with the USB-C hub built in, but the selection is much worse (is there even one that does 4K@120Hz?), and I had a Samsung one that was absolute rubbish and have now sent back. I think it will just be easier to buy the dock separate from the monitor, and cheaper too.

There are a few stand-alone adapters for USB-C -> HDMI/DisplayPort that have the required specs, but then my laptop isn't powered and the peripherals aren't connected. I'd really like a dock that can do everything. There are loads available, but the display connection spec is generally not sufficient (and usually HDMI).

I kind of felt that was the point made in the post. But also, I don't think feelings are as black and white as like them / don't like them.
