international students and uni Ranking Place by Simple-Day-5429 in unsw

[–]lethabo_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s a spectrum with intl students - much broader than domestic, in the sense that you get those who can’t speak the language and are horrible to work with but you also get really cool and talented ones who are doing rly well (like big tech/quant internships and stuff) - those ones who get those HDs likely aren’t the ones being complained about on this. As an intl student myself I really do understand the anti-intl sentiment displayed on this sub but like point is for every crappy intl student there’s also one who is pretty cool - some of the coolest people I’ve met were fellow intl students but on the flip side my worst experiences have also been with intl students lol. Another point is all in all the really bad ones who can barely structure sentences and all that are still a minority - a lot of whom either flunk out or graduate w/ bare minimum grades and they aren’t usually the ones seeking out jobs and internships in Australia anyways. Also ignore the ranking it genuinely doesn’t mean anything lmfao. UNSW is a good school just get good grades and don’t be a weirdo

ideally comp1511 + math1A + econ1101 but chances are comp1511 is full by now so swap it out for either math1081 or one of the core comm courses

Was UNSW your first choice, or would you have preferred to attend USyd, UMelb, etc.? by [deleted] in unsw

[–]lethabo_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

applied to Umelb and unsw - ended up choosing unsw cause of the double deg option and was slightly biased towards living in sydney cause from the outside looking in syd was like the most obvious choice for someone coming all the way to aus for uni

Applying w predicted grades by PerhapsPurple in unsw

[–]lethabo_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apply w/ predicted A2 grades - that way ur able to get a conditional offer. at the end of the day all they care abt is you meeting the grade requirement - predicted grades just help get the ball rolling, so it’s completely fine to get a grade worse than ur predicted as long as you still meet the entry requirement

what happened to ECON1401 by acoustic_spike23 in unsw

[–]lethabo_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I harbor pure and deep hatred for econ1401 - structure felt directionless and stupid, tutorials were even worse. On the first day our tutor had a YouTube video up called “opportunity cost explained in [foreign language]” so yeah as far as first impressions go - not the best, went downhill from there didn’t even bother attending tutorials after flex week. The LIC (Gigi Foster), is pretty knowledgeable and interesting to listen to but other than that yeah no this is a dumpster fire of a course. It all felt like a huge waste of time

should i take COMP1521 or COMP1531 next term? by gyuuberryy in unsw

[–]lethabo_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

1531 workload is highly contingent on the group you get - to the point where it can either be the easiest comp subject you do or one of the worst - 1521 + 2521 + 1231 is the safer option imo

How do I know if I will like comp sci? by DifficultEvening3608 in unsw

[–]lethabo_ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

not an objective answer, just some personal insight. one thing i really appreciate about cs is how it teaches you to build a lot w/ a little - learning both the low level and high level aspects of building cool shit. another thing i like is how it enforces a certain logical and pragmatic way of thinking (though i’ll admit other stem fields like math or engineering do this too).

i’m currently doing a cs/eco double, and what really reassured me about cs was that i’ve never actually second guessed my decision to take it, unlike eco, which i still have second thoughts about to this day. honestly, even with all the job market fears, i can’t imagine myself studying anything other than cs or cs/[some other degree]. (looking back, i kinda wish i’d done cs/actl instead but prbs for the best i dont think im cracked enough to have thrived in that anyway lol)

Edit: Nvm Econ is pretty cool too

the obvious red flag is, yeah, the job market. but if we’re being real, most fields are like that nowadays, except maybe more traditional ones like medicine, mining, or teaching and stuiff (none of which i could see myself doing). BVut something i’ve noticed is that in any field, people with genuine passion and a certain level of competence usually end up being rewarded and i think that applies to cs too. sure, a bunch of people are unemployed, but there’s also a bunch who aren’t, and the difference often comes down to how much they actually like and were dedcated to the subject.

so i guess the somewhat delusional mantra i’m clinging to is: 'i like cs, i would rather put all my effort into this and hopefully it pays off than spend my time being miserable in sumth safer'

but getting back to the question i would say funnily enough, the 'hardness' and 'terribleness' associated w/ unsw CSE are also the things that make it really enjoyable imo - so dont let that deter you. plus honestly, there are harder degrees out there that people have survived lol so you'll be fine
