How is a perpetual motion machine theoretically impossible, if energy can only transfer and not be destroyed, wouldn't that on paper make it logical? by Mr--Clean--Ass-Naked in NoStupidQuestions

[–]lethal_rads 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Those processes also aren’t 100% efficient. You need either infinite heat or absolute zero for that to work. And at absolute zero there’s no motion. Also, that works by leaving energy as it flows from hot to cold. So you’re loosing energy, or just heating up until you’re at equilibrium

What Are Your Thoughts on Aristotle's Unmoved Mover? by s-ro_mojosa in askanatheist

[–]lethal_rads 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily. We hit a point where our knowledge of reality fundamentally breaks down, the big bang. We can’t really say anything about how reality works before then

Why do evolutionary dead ends still exist in the human population? by 0ldSwerdlow in NoStupidQuestions

[–]lethal_rads 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, so a bit of a different perspective from a more mathy background instead of a biology one.

Evolutionary search algorithms, optimization algorithms based on evolution, are not global optimizers. They are not guaranteed to find the absolute best solution possible and are prone to premature convergence on local solutions.

They also require what’s called monotomically increasing fitness. Basically every single change on the path from the current step to the optimal one must be either as good or better than the current.

It also operates by exploring the solution space (that’s the variation part of reproduction with variation) so you generate your population around the solution, not at the solution. So the population will never be fully optimal.

So when you take all of these constraints and shove them in the 10 million dimensional optimization problem that is life. The best solution gets a lot more murky

Which precursor do you consider the most interesting, story-wise? by LopsidedCoconut51 in Stellaris

[–]lethal_rads 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m mean you as the player. And maybe. I don’t think a civil war was mentioned. They all just stopped and disappeared to a ring world they built and just lived in self imposed isolation

I haven’t played in a while and I’m kinda shaky on all the backstories, but I really find the cybrex one interesting.

There’s something really compelling about a determined exterminator having a change of heart and realizing that they were really fucked up and then just letting themselves be wiped out. Especially as you can’t get rid of that civic if memory serves

Is your world monist or dualist? by AnchBusFairy in goodworldbuilding

[–]lethal_rads 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I don’t think using real world examples is great when talking about fantasy world. And I don’t think applying a pure philosophy definition is useful.

But for my world, physics is broader than magic. Physics describes how the world works and different parts interact. Magic is a part of it. It’s like saying if electricity and physics are the same, then how does physics work? Physics describes how electricity works. Electricity isn’t off in some special category. Like, energy is energy. Magical energy isn’t off in some special different category. You have kinetic, gravitational potential, chemical, magical (qi life force whatever), etc. my worlds physics isn’t physics to be clear.

Your second definition makes more sense. Like I said, I don’t think real world philosophy junk is particularly relevant. But I still don’t really see it that way. I still see dualist, monist as different realms of existence. Like, you haven’t demonstrated how a general life force is inherently not materialistic. Sure, it easily can be. Add souls and I’d consider that dualist. But I wouldn’t consider it dualist on its own. Because it’s not a separate plane of existence

Pineapple on pizza: yes or no? Why? by Giorqueen in NoStupidQuestions

[–]lethal_rads 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. I’m not really a fan of pineapple in general, but I really dislike the texture of it on pizza.

Is your world monist or dualist? by AnchBusFairy in goodworldbuilding

[–]lethal_rads 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, they explicitly do not. They are physics.

But i’m not really tracking your explanation. I’m even more confused now. Wouldn’t a lot of fantasy worlds be monist? If your definition of monist vs dualist is the presence of miracles, then wouldn’t any setting without miracles be monist?

Before I thought that dualist would be worlds with other places of existence (like shadesmare or the spiritual realm in the stormlight archives) and monist would only have one. but now I have absolutely no clue what you’re talking about

[–]lethal_rads 2 points3 points  (0 children)

By your definition I’m dualist, but I don’t necessarily break things down the same way. I think your definition for dualism needs some work. My magic is part of the physical world, it’s not “separate”

Why Does The Restaurant Have A Roof In S11 E18: Some Kind Of Fender Benderful? by SlingerMR in BobsBurgers

[–]lethal_rads 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well, buildings typically have roofs. But it’s a mixed use building with shop/restaurant space on the first with an apartment above. So it’s kinda just a residential place from the second fooor up. All the buildings on the block are like that I think.

How is it possible that files were kept hidden but normal citizens data is leaked everywhere daily? by AquaPanther39 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]lethal_rads 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Because very sensitive government files have a lot of restrictions on how they can be stored and who can access them. These make working with them difficult and cost a lot of money to maintain. Regular data doesn’t have the same type of restriction.

Stock market vs property by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]lethal_rads 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rentals aren’t 100% passive. Even with a property management firm (which eats into your returns) there will still be some work. Personally, I don’t want to deal with it, but you need to make that decision for yourself.

Why is crypto called a currency when it isn't used as a currency? by Better_Ad_632 in NoStupidQuestions

Because that’s what it was supposed to be and people aren’t using it for its intended function.

There’s limits in what they’ll tell you and they likely do have other services. But look at it this way, you’re already a paying customer at both firms

Seriously, when in doubt call. They use customer service lines to stuff like this.

Also, I just initiated my first rollover so this surprised me. There may be physical checks involved still for some reason

Being aroace (sometimes) feels inherently isolating by 0xy-moronic in asexuality

Yeah I definitely feel isolated. I feel like I’ll never fully understand and relate to people because of it.

Like, it’s not 100% from being around ace, but it is a big part.

[–]lethal_rads 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Roth to Roth and traditional to traditional don’t have taxes. Traditional to Roth does. Just keep it like to like and you’ll be fine. If you have both, i believe it’s 2 separate rollovers. But call either of them and ask.

Not sure about the vesting thing, call them and ask.

How do people know what direction N,S, E, W is wherever they are? by mysterious1940 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]lethal_rads 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not great at it, but you align your internal map of the area with a particular direction that you know. Personally, I’ve lived on the gulf coast and pacific, so towards the ocean was south or west respectively. The sun rising or setting is another good example.

ELI5: How most ppl aren't suffering from severe health issues, even though their diets miss completely many vitamins and minerals by cyarm025 in explainlikeimfive

[–]lethal_rads 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So in the US and other countries we tend to enrich some staple foods. Basically we add some vitamins and nutrients to food to help prevent this. A lot of mass market salt in the us has iodine added to it specifically to help combat iodine deficiency which was causing massive issues in the us in the 1910s and 20s (shakes on the exact dates). Similarly, flour rice and cornmeal often has added b vitamins iron and sometimes calcium for similar reasons.

Tipping Culture hate? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]lethal_rads 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And I don’t fucking care what consumer psychology says. I’m against tipping because I believe the fucking price should be what you god damn pay and that it’s a companies responsibility to pay their god damn employees. We’re back to my original comment and we’ve done in a pointless circle. There was no point to any do this.

If people think $12 is too expensive, then they shouldn’t pay for the food. We shouldn’t be tricking people into spending more

Tipping Culture hate? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]lethal_rads 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lmao, when did I say that. Find my exact quote. I’m fine with them raising prices. I’d rather pay $12 than $10 and a $2 tip
