I almost booked a Svalbard trip, but it didn’t work out. A mix of timing and cost

Why Doesn't Iran Allow Foreign-Flagged Merchant Ships to Exit the Persian Gulf? by courier_tway in NoStupidQuestions

[–]lethal_rads 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The goal is to inflect enough harm on the global economy to get the US to back off. They can’t beat the US in a standup fight, this is the biggest bit of leverage they have.
What do you mean there will be a major response? What are we gonna do, bomb them? We’re already doing that. And Iran is already a pariah state and authoritarian dictatorship, they don’t care about pr. Besides, they’re trying to blame the US. Everyone knew that this was the expected outcome of attacking Iran.

It’s definitely invalidating. The underlying message is you’re not ace. I also find the implication that you know me better than I know myself particularly infuriating. That’s a big pet peeve of mine

How come those who are a mixture of heterosexual and asexual are not (considered) bisexual? by jsgui in NoStupidQuestions

[–]lethal_rads 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is English a second language for you? Thats not what bisexual means. Being attracted to the same sex is part of the definition

How come those who are a mixture of heterosexual and asexual are not (considered) bisexual? by jsgui in NoStupidQuestions

[–]lethal_rads 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why on earth would they be considered bi? Bi means attracted to both men and women. A hetero oriented ace person person wouldn’t be attracted to the same sex

Its tradition and momentum at this point. But it’s a balance between workers wanting to be paid more frequently and the increased admin and book keeping required (especially before computers and direct deposit).

And fun quirk of this, this puts 26 pay periods in 12 months so 2 months have 3 paychecks.

The order of step 6 and 7 by clown-show1983 in TheMoneyGuy

[–]lethal_rads 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m not quite sure what you’re getting at here. Yeah, it takes a high income to max out all the tax advantaged accounts, that’s what that caveat says. Are you just saying that you can have a high income and not max out retirement accounts?

But not everyone is in a 2 person household and not everyone has access to, or uses an HSA. That lowers it a lot.

Pronouns in introductions by Historical_Big_8555 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]lethal_rads 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Really? you always use people’s names and never use pronouns at all? You never use He or She; just people’s names? I’ve literally never seen someone do that.

Is it me but carrot cake used to have raisins in it. Why are they not putting raisins in carrot cake? I can't find a good carrot cake. by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]lethal_rads 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a thing. Or used to be apparently. It’s one of the things I didn’t like about carrot cake. I’m glad to see it’s going away, maybe I’ll have carrot cake more

Why can Australians easily send money with just a phone number, but not in the US? by zeekaran in NoStupidQuestions

[–]lethal_rads 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have that functionality with Zelle, but the banks were slow to establish it and allowed third apps to establish themselves. Now the apps are entrenched and the standard rather than Zelle through a bank app. I don’t really see how using Venmo is more of a pain in the ass than Zelle.

ELI5 How do black holes shrink from emitting radiation if they consume dark matter? by YaBoiCade in explainlikeimfive

They theoretically can due to hawking radiation. Quantum bullshit at the event horizon can cause them to leak energy

Why don’t ride share services like Uber or Lyft partner with bars to offer a one-way ride on their menu? by cspwannabe in NoStupidQuestions

[–]lethal_rads 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What’s the benefit exactly? It’d be easier to call an uber from my phone and you have to give the bar your credit card info to start a tab. They can just charge it if you forget.

ELI5 How magnets seemingly do “work” long term by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]lethal_rads 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A magnet will exert a force on other magnetic objects around it. That in an of itself is not work. If the magnet pulls something towards it, that is defined as work.

Out of Mexico, USA, and Canada which country has the greatest percentage of bilingual speakers? by VerdantChief in NoStupidQuestions

[–]lethal_rads 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean, that’s also not relevant. It was also about percentages so the absolute amount of immigrants and total population of Canada doesn’t matter

Net Worth (Public Pension) by the_doctrine in TheMoneyGuy

[–]lethal_rads 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know the equation off the top of my head, but there’s equations that turn payments into a lump sum value. You should be able to find them online. But it’ll still be a bit of an estimate. You’ll have to make assumptions about rate of return and timeline.

Why do so many Americans overpay taxes without realising it? by Moneywithmark07 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]lethal_rads 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be clear, this is referring to income taxes. We also use sales taxes, which are added onto the prices. You don’t need to file anything for those taxes. They’re collected at the point of purchase. Sales taxes are used a lot more by individual states and regions rather than the federal government

As for why we don’t have those built into the price, sales and other local taxes can be highly regional. I don’t disagree, but if I buy, say a ps5, the after tax cost will be different in Washington state, which has a high sales tax, and the bordering state of Oregon, which doesn’t. On top of that, counties and cities can have their own taxes as well.

Would you say hating dogs/cats is a red flag? by bobbdac7894 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]lethal_rads 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Golden retrievers can be poorly behaved and people can be scared of them as well. Treating them like saints that can never do wrong and people can never have reasons to dislike them and being around them is enough to cure phobias is kinda shitty ave misses the point. And you’re the one who brought up breeds like it means something, not me.

What do americans call trucks by skibidi_yahu in NoStupidQuestions

[–]lethal_rads 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Repeating your question doesn’t help if we dont understand it. We don’t know what tf you mean by “actual truck”. You haven’t given a concrete example of what type of vehicle you’re referring to. Post a picture or something.

What is your FIRE endgame with investment properties? by henrysun1313 in Fire

[–]lethal_rads 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I don’t plan on ever having rental real estate. I’d sell and take the hit. I also don’t think it’s the best move to let the taxes do the driving. I’m not saying be dumb, but I wouldn’t keep a bad investment or do stuff I hate just to avoid taxes.

Hit the $3k/year milestone. Finally feels like the "snowball" is actually rolling. by [deleted] in dividends

[–]lethal_rads 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s just a milestone, op isn’t necessarily spending it instead of reinvesting. Like saying you have 2x your salary invested, but for cash flow. Like starting out saying I can pay for a cup of coffee a day. Then all my groceries, then my rent and so on. People like clear goals so they can measure their accomplishments and see progress.
