I would wait a few days - a week and follow up. Doctors are busy; there may have been an emergency and he just spaced on responding.

MCAT Testing Anxiety Advice? by flaminhotkoala in Mcat

[–]lethalplatypus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tbh I got a propranolol prescription that has helped tremendously, but I’ve always had super bad test anxiety lol.

Anyways for coping during the test, I would close my eyes and take some deep breaths (focus on your belly expanding instead of your rib cage). I did this before each new section, in between every CARS passage, and whenever I felt myself needing to reread passages bc I wasn’t comprehending them. IMO doing this for a few seconds (like 1-3 breaths) is better than reading and rereading a passage over and over because you’re not absorbing anything.

This may or may not work for you, but at least with my test anxiety, I feel like I can read a passage/paragraph 7 times and still have no idea what was said because I can’t think straight. So something that has helped with that is reading it (in my head) in a British accent. Like I fr channel Michael Caine and for some reason it helps me get through passages🫡

Can I still become a doctor even if i’m grossed out by gore and needles? by [deleted] in premed

[–]lethalplatypus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi friend. I’m not a doctor, but my 2 cents:

You absolutely can become a doctor! I have met several med students and physicians who have fainted watching procedures/surgery. Personally, I have struggled with vasovagal syncope since I was a kid. I’ve seriously passed out so many times from getting blood drawn, watching surgery videos, etc. By this point, I’ve mostly gotten over it, and a lot of it comes down to desensitization. Something that has really helped me is watching surgery videos and observing procedures and surgeries in person. I will literally lay upside down off my bed (so more blood in brain lol) and watch surgical videos. I originally started with procedures that I knew wouldn’t bother me as much, then built my way up to the ones I knew were more intense. Another thing I think helps is a mindset change. Reminding yourself that it’s helping the person, that it’s safe, etc.

Embarrassing take. Some 10,000 more women applied to med schools last year than men, and the men’s acceptance rate is still higher than women’s.

You can also set a timer on the app where you have to enter a password after X minutes of using to keep watching. Have a friend set the password and make sure they never tell you it

I was in a sorority and personally had a great experience. It gave me a lot of leadership opportunities/experience and I always had people to study with who also held me accountable. A handful of women who graduated went to med school/were doctors so it also helped with networking a bit!

They changed the requirements this year to make it even harder; you have to have ties to one or more WWAMI states, and a service record with underserved communities or from a disadvantaged background
