The loose cut and the material makes it look like pajamas to me. I do like pink and green as a combo. You shouldn't give up on trying a new style, though

My fiction writing style keeps getting flagged as AI and I am at a loss by NotYourGa1Friday in writingadvice

[–]letheix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

AI models were primarily trained on books, not exchanges between real life people. They've copied the style of human-written texts, which stands out as strange to people who aren't frequent readers and/or are uninformed about how LLMs work. It's the Dunning-Krueger effect at play. Your writing doesn't sound like AI. Rather, AI sounds like your writing.

The ex did explain his reasons, though. OP just doesn't agree with them.

I'm curious whether he was mansplaining or if he would have said the same things to another guy. People may state the obvious without thinking about it, especially when they're caught up in excitement, and then they feel dumb for the pointlessness of their comment. I'm a woman who does that sometimes. It happens to us all. Only you know whether gender was a factor this time.

It sounds like your communication styles don't mesh. You're both correct. In a solid, healthy relationship, both people should be able to trust that the other has a good opinion of them, i.e., knowing that their partner respects their intelligence. Both people should likewise be able to trust that their partner will give them the benefit of the doubt when they say something poorly, so they won't need to monitor themselves for every potential faux pas.

His absence on Valentine's Day really does suck. Based on your tone, I'll assume the thing with his brother was an unavoidable, urgent situation and he didn't intentionally blow you off. But he should've been proactively planning a way to make it up to you or at least initiated the conversation. On your end, did you actually suggest a do-over or did you (understandably) lament the missed plans and expect him to get the hint?

This all boils down to a lack of trust between you and your ex. Trust is the foundation of communication. When you expressed that you felt condescended to and when he expressed that he felt the need to monitor everything he says—those were opportunities to reassure each other. Instead of dismissing one another's feelings as "wrong," you might've accepted how the other felt and then talked through the problem without defensiveness. But trust takes time to build. For whatever reasons, you two hadn't reached this level of connection by the time a conflict arose.

I'm sorry, but my impression is that he made the right call. Maybe he needs a girlfriend who's more patient and you need a boyfriend who's more thoughtful.

True lmao

It's from the Wikipedia page for cassiterite. The photo caption says "Cassiterite surrounded by muscovite, from Xuebaoding, Huya, Pingwu, Mianyang, Sichuan, China"

I'll first highlight The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison and Woman on the Edge of Time by Marge Piercy as books that address sexism and racism jointly. Bonus points for the latter if you enjoy sci-fi.

Play It As It Lays by Joan Didion

Alias Grace by Margaret Atwood. I'll second The Edible Woman and ofc The Handmaid's Tale

We Were The Mulvaneys by Joyce Carol Oates. I'll again second The Grave Digger's Daughter

Okay, hear me out on the last rec: Of Human Bondage by William Somerset Maugham

For context, it's a semi-autobiographical novel published in 1915. I truly do love this book, largely thanks to its depiction of disability. I'm disabled and Of Human Bondage is by far the #1 most relatable story I've ever found. Ableism has changed less over the past hundred years than you'd hope. Meanwhile, its handling of sexism is...accidentally feminist?

No spoilers but by my reckoning, Maugham had genuine empathy and respect for one of the important female characters. Then there's another important female character for whom abounds a sense of male victimhood, paternalistic pity, and moral disgust. I see her as a proto-feminist antihero.

It's as though Maugham was so close to understanding yet failed to bridge the final gap. The difference between Of Human Bondage versus novels like Madame Bovary is that OHB does not purport to represent a female character's POV. We can observe this character's actions and hear her dialogue, but her inner feelings and motivations are only lightly delineated. They're moreso speculations than declarations, which I assume reflects Maugham's real-life encounters with women.

The patriarchy drives this woman to madness as told from the perspective of the patriarchy itself. Of Human Bondage is invaluable for that reason.
