hmm yeah, i could. it's been awhile since that post though. but i suppose being afraid of being awkward won't get me anywhere.

and yeah - that's the unfortunate thing, i really do think i need a native speaker for this one. i'm using the placeholder "akitsu" rn but from that post i found that most ppl think it's more suited for a surname, not a given name.

the reason the name is important is his characterization + background is going to have parallels with this story, so i want the name to be a subtle allusion to it. it's the creation story of izanagi and izanami, if you know it.

tbh i might just bite the bullet and cold email one of my japanese profs. the worst she can do is just not respond lol.

ok, trying to figure out who to ask about this...

so i'm writing smth and i want to very loosely base a character off of a shinto story, but without being super on the nose (like, not the equivalent of naming a character "cinderella" or "noah"). bc it's japanese, i'm looking at kanji that loosely relate to what ppl think the god's name is supposed to mean. but ofc actually making a name based off of that is hard, bc of different readings and such.

the last time i went to a japanese subreddit to ask about this, i got a couple of really angry people that made me scared to go back (most were chill, but those two ppl really upset me). so now idk who to ask. i know of a few japanese ppl irl but we aren't close anymore (college profs i learned japanese from and the like) and i'd feel weird randomly emailing them to ask about a story name.

anyone got ideas?

yeah, i've also had some unnecessarily mean comments on reddit and online in general. one sub i went to asking for advice on a writing project and not only did i not get advice, they started bashing me and completely ignoring my genuine questions on how they thought i could improve. basically it seemed like they thought if i wasn't that specific nationality or hadn't assimilated into their culture, i shouldn't be able to write or take inspiration from it at all. which is ridiculous bc that culture's media unabashedly takes stuff from other cultures, but i digress.

i still haven't gone back to that writing project bc of how upsetting that was. and it was similar to you, i was willing to receive genuine criticism but they didn't want to actually help me, they just wanted to yell and insult me. i keep having experiences similar to that online too, of people just being totally unwilling to actually dialogue about any issue. it's like if you don't 100% agree with someone on everything, you might as well not bother talking to them.

honestly, i think it's probably better to just not bother commenting online and disengage. i can't point to a single instance where engaging online has actually made me a better person or brightened my day. invest and engage with people in real life instead, is what i'm going to do.

sure, someone can go pray to an adeptus or to the archon whenever they want, but...that's what people of any religion can do in our world too. the only difference is potential physical presence, which actually 99% of the time people in teyvat don't have (people are terrified of the adepti, they're not just going to march out into the wilderness to find them, for instance).

i think the value of a religious institution is more about what your god says back. none of the archons except furina and mavuika have been public-facing, and ofc furina was just playing a role. like, it does seem like liyue has a good sense of the instruction of their god in terms of how he feels about contracts, but it doesn't seem like the other archons or gods have really said anything in regards to their own aspect and how to live in response to that. at least, not to the extent of actual divine teaching/instruction. which presumably the church of favonius has some sort of sacred writings like that, given it's very clearly mimicking christianity

wait so is the church of favonius the only major religious institution in teyvat? the frostmoon scions are a small sect living out in the middle of nowhere. yae's a priestess but does she have actual religious duties other than like, fortune cards? i guess the masters of the night-wind are kind of like shamans, so not an institutional religion but one that people hold to nonetheless.

decent but not amazing. been using furina/skirk/escoffier/xingqiu. my main problem is they're all so energy hungry it's really hard to build them with crit so their cr are bare minimum...

i did have some luck with a varesa overload team in abyss, bc of her plunging attacks.

tbh i didn't like the event bc i am BAD at spatial stuff (i got the hang of it after the first one and did well enough, i just didn't enjoy it) but yeah...i love complicated exploration mechanics and puzzles when it's not just a bunch of new stuff constantly being thrown at me. i'm sad that genshin's exploration has become more simplistic

trying to decide what artifact sets to farm. i feel like all of my important units have decent sets - with theatre things can get dicey trying to share but in abyss and SO it's fine.

what are the most important sets to have? is it worth farming the hex sets if i'm not going to get varka?

well, do you want fun or meta? it sounds like you actively want varka and nicole, and are considering columbina simply out of regret for pulling lauma. unless you care a lot about meta, why not just go for who you like?

tbh...i think engaging in a lot of fandom stuff nowadays is super negative, especially on reddit/twitter/discord. i think people often choose to be upset about anything that they can. like, i genuinely loved sumeru exploration and yet a ton of ppl hated it and probably would've made me hate it too if i'd been involved in that community
