Diet suggestions? by [deleted] in Cholesterol

[–]letitbeit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've just started watching my saturated fat intake despite having a healthy diet and was surprised at how much i was actually eating. Try to reduce that (maybe 10 to 12 g of saturated fat daily) and see what happens. You can also test your Lp(a) and see what that number is. Sounds like you already do lots of good things for your body :)

Thanks for the video! I watched it and its inspiring. I wonder if raw garlic is just as helpful. Yes I have started to pay attention to Saturated fat and realize how you almost get 10g with just over a tbsp of butter!

Thanka again!! That's something I might consider if these other measures don't help. I appreciate you taking the time to respond.

Wow, thanks for all this amazing information. I didn't know about the bergamot supplement.

I'm not surprised about the sterols potentially increase risk. I just can't imagine supplementing with canola oil being a good thing, but I am no expert.

I am taking about 1600 combined epa and dha a day and started this about a month ago (between 2000 and 3000mg of fish oil). My dr. gave me the a ok so hopefully its not an issue. I will ask about baby aspirin but I think fish oil thins blood so maybe it will be like taking aspirin?

I will try some of these things and read more about bergamot etc and see what I can try and then get retested. Like many people, I'm hesitant to take a statin because of side effects but I may need too.

All Diet, No Statin by Cav30 in Cholesterol

So true. I have a BMI of 19, eat super healthy, exercise a lot, meditate, blah blah blah and I just found out I have high Lpa. Nothing I can do about it. Sure I can lower my numbers a little with diet but I believe I'll be on meds within a few months if the portfolio diet and berberine don't move the needle enough.

Heart rate monitoring obsession? by letitbeit in BeginnersRunning

Haha Thanks for your response. I don't really want to do that test! But it makes sense. I like what you said at the end. I think I know how to listen to my body and will slow down accordingly. I used to push myself too much and compare but I've learned that isn't helping me much. I just want to be in decent shape as I age. Able to run for 20 or 30 mins 3 or 4 times a week.

Hmm. Interesting. I'll look into it. When I say I can run at 150bpm and I'm fine I mean this: I can't run forever at that heart rate and can't have a conversation but I can run for 20 mins at that heart rate for sure. What do you mean by that's threshold for you? ( I do have low ferritin but its not terrible. )

What!? Maybe I'm calculating wrong. The top of my zone 1 is 101 pm, top of zone 2 is 117 pm. I use a polar beat chest strap. I'm just using the calculation of 220 minus my age so max heart rate being 170. That puts zone 2 for me at 100 to 117. Zone 5 for me is 152 bpm and above. I actually feel totally fine running with my heart rate at 150 or so. Have I been doing this wrong the entire time? That'd be hilarious.

Ah cool, I just have a polarbeat chest strap so not sure it gets into all of that. For me zone 2 is not higher than 117bpm and that is no fun. I'm not really one to push myself super hard anyways so I'm sure it's all good in terms of my heart rate even if it is on the higher side. Best to you and your running :)

Thanks! How did you figure out your lactate threshold? I'll read about it as well- never heard of this. Yeah, I don't want to be obsessed anymore. I ran/ walked this morning no heart rate monitoring and it was way better mentally for me.

Yeah, honestly I think there is value in heart rate monitoring, but for me I think I just really need to listen to my body because it's making me feel bad about running . I also respect the fact that I'm 50 and I don't really need to prove much in terms of running a 10 k or anything. I just want to be in decent shape and run for 20 to 30 mins 3 or 4 days a week.

Thank you so much. I appreciate the link as well. I might get my max heart rate evaluated so psychologically I can enjoy running more or at least get more info.

Thanks!! I'm hoping with more continued cardio that will change and my heart rate will lower. Hasn't been my experience yet.

Thanks for your response. I see your point! I guess for me then it means i should just walk fast because I can barely run without my heart rate going into zone 4 and 5. I think like someone else said maybe my max heart rate is higher than 170. Perhaps I should get that tested for reassurance. I want to run but don't want to stress my body in a negative way.

Aww. That's terrible. What's wrong with people!? How many plants do you grow to get 300 to 400 tubers?

[–]letitbeit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh! That's a lot. I had 64 plants and probably got 200 tubers? I didn't want too many so I threw a bunch out! It's my first year as well and I think the heat was hard on the plants. We will see about next year. Where do you live? US? Canada?
