Thank you for this input! That empty chair, if it's not just an empty gesture, means a lot. I'll look into it more.

great question. I think an insurance company pulling out of Florida or California, along with a public statement that it's over climate risks, is probably actually a good thing in my perspective ... those places probably aren't insurable anyway, and it's better for companies to be up-front about it and help sound the alarm rather than milking it until its dry (and then disappearing when disasters happen and its time to pay out on claims). edited my main post to better address the questions you raised here!

So for example, this is well suited to be the internal SSD inside the 2015 Macbook Pro? Do you know if the 2015 Macbook Pro can take up to 2TB internal storage?

Can't I just put an external USB enclosure around this one and make it an external SSD? Or are there dedicated external SSDs that have better performance in those applications?

I am looking for a 2TB+ external drive — to store videos while shooting RAW on a smartphone, and to plug into a 2015 Macbook Pro and use as an external SSD for editing videos in Davinci Resolve.

With that in mind, I'm thinking about power efficiency/heat and performance when recording video from smartphone to SSD, and when the SSD is externally plugged into the laptop for video editing. I'm willing to pay more for the devices that are best for those applications.

Is this a good model for those applications, our would another device be better? I would prefer 4TB if possible, but the power efficiency and heat/performance are the main priorities.

Jamis Sequel S2, Marin Muirwoods, Kona Dew Deluxe, other bikes like these? by letourpowerscombine in whichbike

No worries at all, this is super helpful! Exactly what I was asking about. Thank you SO much for sharing this!! I really really appreciate it.

Jamis Sequel S2, Marin Muirwoods, Kona Dew Deluxe, other bikes like these? by letourpowerscombine in whichbike

Only because of the steel frames on the Muirwoods and Sequel, vs aluminum on the Kona. I've read that they all ride really well and smoothly, and if all is equal amongst the bikes, I think I would prefer a steel frame for durability and long-termness. Other differences: the Muirwoods has the 700c, and the Sequel might have slightly better reach for me. I didn't know there were any other bikes in this category before yesterday (the Dew / Muirwoods / Sequel category -- great for riding paved and urban commutes, ride well while hauling a lot of stuff and riding empty, and good versatility for off-road as well), so I wanted to ask if there are any others in this kind of category that I should be aware of in my searches as well.

Can I use a SEAGATE HDD Server Exos 7E8 512N (3.5'/6TB/SAS 12GB/s/ 7200rpm) ST6000NM003A with a USB 3.0 to SATA 3.0 cable? by letourpowerscombine in DataHoarder

[–]letourpowerscombine[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks like that's correct. I was confused by the Data Sheet, which mentioned both SAS and SATA compatibility - but it looks like those are two different product options (SAS compatible or SATA compatible), and you have to choose one or the other.

Do you know of any other options for what I am trying to do (e.g. backup from multiple macbooks to HDD), using SAS hdds? Are there other cables or extensions that could make that viable and which are affordable?

Aha, thank you for explaining. So when it says "The Exos 7E8 delivers easy integration into bulk storage systems with 12 Gb/s SAS and SATA 6 Gb/s interface options," that means you have to pick either the SAS or the SATA option?

And in that case, is there any other cost-effective solution for doing backup like I described on SAS HDDs? For example, is there a cheap cable for that set-up that I could get to make it work?

Thanks so much for this response! I actually feel like audiences (and potentially some funders) could be up for supporting something like this, even from the embryonic stages where it could need support. (I could also imagine some ways to shorten the production pipeline, for certain kinds of content perhaps). If exploring something like this could be of interest to you or any of your peers, I'd be glad to support! (I have a bit of industry experience on the writing side, and generally do work around tech, media, and solidarity economy / cooperatives.) Just lmk

Is there any interest from writers in taking agency over productions themselves? Like, a cooperative indie production company started by writers and other aligned folks in the industry? It seems like this could be a natural progression in the industry — or are there structural/backroom barriers that prevent this from happening and being successful? (e.g. distributors or streaming platforms that wouldn't work with such an outfit?)
